IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-HANDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [71,645, dated January 4, 1876; application filed November 30, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BLAKE. of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Umbrella-Handle; and do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent in Figure 1 side view in partial section; Fig. 2, socket detached; Fig. 3, rose or center; Fig. 4, blank preparatory to shaping the handle.

This invention relates to the construction of the handle ends ,of umbrellas, parasols, canes, and like articles termed in this specification as umbrella-handles.

The object of this invention is to produce a light, strong, and durable handle, as well as ornamental; and it consists in a handle composed of several wires or rods doubled or bent into the shape required for the handle, their ends united in a common socket, and so as to produce a cage or open handle, as more fully hereinafter described.

A is the socket, which in diameter corresponds to the staff to which itis to be applied. a a are wires or rods, more or less in number, united or crossing each other at a common center, and so as to project radially therefrom, as seen in Fig. 4. To cover the point of union between these rods a disk or rose, 1), is attached and their ends brought together and united in the socket A, preferably by perforating one end of the socket to correspond to the several ends of the wires, the ends being inserted into their respective perforations, and soldered within the socket, or otherwise secured. This produces an open or cage-like handle, as seen in Fig. 1. The shape of the wires in transverse section may be fiat, round, or oval. As an ornamentation to the handle a small bell or other charm, 0?, may be suspended therein, as seen in Fig. 1.

I claim- 1. The herein described umbrella handle, consisting of. the socket A and the several wires 60 radiating from a common center, and bent to give the shape of the handle, and united in the socket, substantially as described.

2. In combination with an umbrella-handle, consisting'of the socketA and the several wires a, radiating from a common center, bent to give the shape of the handle, and united in the socket, an ornament or charm suspended within the handle, substantially as described.
