This invention relates to duplex scissors and has for an object to provide simple and eflicient means for adjusting the lateral spacing of the two pairs of blades as well as to arrange the operating handles in such forceis applied to both pairs of blades.
In one embodiment of the invention, two pairs of scissors blades are mounted upon a single threaded axle. One pair of blades is arranged at one end of the axle and is held against axial movement. The other pair of blades is rotatably mounted upon a sleeve which is interiorly threaded to cooperate with the threads of the axle. The pairs of blades are operated in unison through the medium of members extending blades. These members are rigidly connected to one pair of blades and slidably connected to the other.- A handle is attached to each member inter mediate the blades. A post is rigidly connected to one blade of the first pair and extends through the corresponding blade of the other pair. This post is threaded to cooperate with the threads of a sleeverotatably mounted in a blade of the second pair and through which the post extends. This sleeve, as well as the sleeve through which the axle extends, is provided with pinions which mesh with a third pinion rotatably mounted 'on the blade through which the post extends and which is provided with a knurled button by means of'which it may be rotated. Rotation of the third pinion causes rotation of the sleeves, thereby moving the second pair of blades toward or awayfrom the first pair of blades.
Duplex scissors of this character are use ful wherever it is desired to make two cuts simultaneously. They may be designed for cutting paper, cloth and the like or for cutting tin, leather and the like. They may also be used for cutting surgical bandages either straight or circular. The two sets of blades may be moved toward or away from each other through the operation of a single adjusting member. Moreover, since the handles are arranged between the two pairs of blades, equal force is applied to each air.

1O andlO designate one pair of blades while 11 and 11 designate thesecond pair of blades. Both sets of blades are pivotally mounted upon the screw-tl'ireaded axle 12. The blades and 10 are arranged at one end of the axle 12 and are fixed. against axial movement thereof, while the blades 11 and 11 are mounted upon a sleeve 13 which is interiorly threaded to co-operate with the threads on the axle 12/ A threaded post 1 1 is rigidly connected to the blade 10 and passes through a sleeve 15 mounted in the blade 11. The post 14 and sleeve provided with co-operating screw threads. A pinion 16 is connected to the sleeve 13 and a pinion 17 is connected to the sleeve 15. These pinions mesh with a third pinion 18 rotatably supported by the blade 11 and provided with a knurled button 19 by means of which it may be operated.
Upon each of. the blades rigidly mounted a plate 20, each of the plates being slotted as at 21. Each of the blades 11 and 11 is provided with a pin 22 which projects into the slot 21 and is provided with a head which overlies the edges of the slot. Handle members 23 are attached to the plates intermediate the ends thereof. By virtue of this arrangement of the handles, equal force is applied to each pair of blades.
The lateral relationship of the two pairs of blades may be varied by rotating the 15 are 10 and 10 is pinion 18. Rotatlon ofthis pinion causes rotation of the pinions with the sleeves 13'and 15, thereby causing the blades 11 and 11 to move toward or away from the blades 10 and 10 When the blades 11 and 11 are thus moved, the pins 22 move longitudinally of the slots 21.

In combination, a threaded axle, a pair of blades mounted upon said axle at one end thereof, a threaded sleeve mounted on said axle, a pair of blades mounted on said sleeve, a pinion connected to said sleeve, a second pinion rotatably mounted upon one blade of said second pair, a threaded post carried by one of the first pair of blades, a threaded sleeve mounted in the corresponding blade of the second pair and through Which said post extends, and a third pinion rotatably mounted upon said last-named blade and being in mesh with each of said other pinions.

In combination, a threaded axle, a pair of blades mounted upon said axle at one end thereof, a threaded sleeve mounted on said axle, a pair of blades mounted on said sleeve, a pinion connected to said sleeve, a second pinion rotatably mounted upon one blade of said second pair, a threaded post carried by one of the first pair of blades, a threaded sleeve mounted in the corresponding blade of the second pair and through which said post extends, a third pinion rotatably mounted upon said last-named blade and being in mesh With each of said other pinions, plates rigidly connected to one pair of blades and slidably connected to the other pair of blades, and handles mounted on said plates intermediate said blades.

In combination,two pairs of cutting blades mounted on a common axle, means for varying the lateral spacing of the pairs of blades comprising a sleeve supporting one pair of blades and threaded to said axle, means to rotate said sleeve, plates rigidly connected to one pair of blades and slidably connected to the corresponding blades of the other pair and handles mounted on said plates intermediate said pairs of blades.

I11 combination, two pairs of cutting blades mounted on a common axle, a guide post carried by one blade of one pair and extending through thecorresponding blade of another pair, means for varying the lateral, spacing of the pairs of blades comprising sleeves threaded on said axle and guide post, one of said sleeves supporting one pair of blades and the other sleeve being mounted in one blade of said pair, means for rotating said. sleeves, plates rigidly connected to one pair of blades and slidably connected to the corresponding blades of the other pair and handles mounted on said plates intermediate said pairs of blades.

In combination, two pairs of blades mounted on a common axle, slotted plates mounted on the blades of one pair, pins mounted on the blades of the other pair and arranged in the slots of said plates, means for varying the lateral spacing of said blades comprising a sleeve supporting one pair of blades and threaded to said axle, and means to rotate said sleeve. 7

In combination, two pairs of blades mounted on a common axle, a pair of plates rigidly connected to one pair of blades and slidably connected to the other pair, and means for varying the lateral spacing of said pairs of blades comprising a sleeve supporting one pair of blades and threaded to said axle, and means to rotate said sleeve.
