ROTARY CUTTER.
Application flediJuly 24, 1925. Serial No. 45,805.
rllhis invention relates to cutters and particularly to cutters for use in preparing short tube or rod sections from a long length of tubing ork rod, one use of thedevice being to cut radiator hose.
The gencral object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive but highly effective device for rapidly cutting rod or tubing into sections.
Particular objects of the invention are to provide an improved rotary cutter head through which the material to be cut may pass, o provide a knife movable on thehead inwardly to' Cut the material and to provide a simple means for operating the knife on the rotary head.
Another object is to provide a gauge ad kjustable toward and from the cutter head to determine the length of tube or rod section to be cut.
The foregoing and other objects are obtained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and' described inv detail below. It is to be understood that ythe 'invention is not limited to the specific construction shown ant described, nor is its use limited to the particular use set forth.
Of the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a radiator hose cutter embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 ure 1; Y
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Figure 2; and Y Figure l is a section on line l1-.11 of ure2. I
Referring to the drawings, 1() represent-s a base plate having mounted thereon a bracket 11 in which is mounted a hollow spindle l2, providing amaterial feeding passageway and I extending outwardly from'bracket 11 as at 1.2 and having journaled thereon a rotary head 13 formed with a sleeve 1li on which is secured a drive pulley 15 which may be driven by a belt 16.
The nead 13 carries a disk knife 17 mounted on a slide 18 movable radially on head 18 in a groove 19. To move the knife inwardly while the head 13 isrotated, sleeve 14; has shiftably mounted thereon a hollow, frustoconical, nen-rotatable cam 20, the inner conv ical surface of which engages a frustoconical roller 21 journaled on a spindle 22 secured on the outer end of slide 18.
For shifting-cam 20 to operate knife 17,
a here 29 ina bracket 30. Block 28 has ascrew 81 thereon onto which is threaded an adjusting wheel and between plate 27 and bracket Gabe/ut block 28 is a compression spring 33. Bracket 30 is adapted to be secured in any of a plurality of positions-relative to cutter head 13 by cap screws engageable in any set of spaced threaded apertures 35, 35 in plate 10.
In use, bracket 30 is so positioned as to place plate 27 approximately the'desired distance from cutter head 13. Adjusting wheel 32 is then actuated to accurately position the plate 27 to produce radiator hose of the desired length. Pulley 15 is rapidly driven by bel 16, thus urging knife 1'!" outwardly by centrifugal force so that roller 2l will ride on the inner surface of cam 2G.
The vulcanized rubber 'tubing indicated at T from which the hose sections are to be cut is fed through the hollow spindle 12 into engagement with plate 27. Lever is now` shifted to the right, thus shifting cam 2O to inv,r ard ly forcing the rapidly revolving knife 17 vthrough the tubing rll. Roller 2l. is all the while held in conhtct'with cam 2O by centrifugal force. The cani 2O is then shifted to 'i'..ie left C, slide 155 to move outwardly to carry the knife 1i', clear of the tubing, the cut section of which is with( rc wn and the tubing again fed It will appear from the foregoing that a device for rapidly and .effectively cutting radiator hose sections and other tube or rod sections from a continuous length of material has been provided. It will also be apparent that modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof `or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is: i
1. A device of the character described, comprising a rotatable cutter head, having viewed in Figure l, thus permit fr guiding passageway therethrough into which theeniateiial beingl cut slidingly fits, a knife shdableon said head across the passageway andl normally urged outwardly on said head by centrifugal force, and means 'for urging said knife inwardly on the head while said head is rotating, said means comprising a roller connected to the knife, a shiftable hollow frusto-eonical cam against the inner surface of which said roller engages whereby the cam limits outward movement of the knife and is adapted to be so shifted as to move said knife inwardlyV on the head to perform a cutting operation7 and a gauge adjustable toward and from said head. v Y
2. A device ofthe character described, comprising a rotatable cutter head, having a guiding passageway therethrough into which the material being cut slidingly fits, a knife slidable on said head across the passageway and normally urged outwardly on said head by centrifugal force, and means for uring' said knife inwardly on thehead while said head is rotating, said mea-ns comprising a roller connected to the kni'l'e and a shiftable hollow truste-conical cam against the inner surface of which said roller engages whereby the cam limits outward movement of the knife and is adapted to be so shifted as to move said knife inwardly on the head to perform a cutting operation.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a rotatable cutter head, having a passageway therethrough into which the material being cut slidingly tits7 a knife slidable on said head across the passageway and normally urged outwardly on said head by centrifugal force7 and means for urging said knife inwardly on the head while said head is rotating.
