The invention relates to leather-working a machine for treating leather and more part icularly one for use in the setting out, I stretching and the securing of leather to a setting-out board in an efficient manner.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1O designates the frame of the machine, 11 astationary pedestal, 12 a pedestal or spindle 'slidably mounted in said pedestal 11 and having a table-supporting frame 13 secured thereto, 14 a table having a central spindle 15 journalled in said pedestal12and provided with'radially spaced sets of rollers 16 running on thetop surface of the frame 13L Thus the table is free to rotate onthe pedestal but pair of bevelled locking lugs 17 are mounted beneath thetable at diametrically opposite points, and a spring-pressed'detent 18 mount ed on the frame 13 is adapted to engage be-' tween either pair of said lugs to'lock the table against turning. With the above construction for setting out and stretching the hide, thesetting-outboard,
with the hide laid thereonin a pliable condition, isplacedon thet'able in its lowered position and, according to one method, with adhesive betweenthe boardand the hide, the board and the hide being'so placed on the table that'when the table is raised to bring J the member 24' into clamping operation, said member will extend lengthwise across the entire hide and beyond the midback portion. The raising of the table to a clamped position is so timed by the operator as to. occur on the outward travel of the roller 44 so that with the hide clamped down the rotating roller is brought into pressing engagement with the hide throughout its entire length and while so related is moved from the midback portion 0f the hide out over the flanks by the "drive connection previously described,
with the result that the hide is secured to the setting-out board and simultaneously stretched in all directions along the engaging front of the roller bythe action of the straight and curved blades, andewhere adhesive used between the hide and the board this stretching action takes place progressively along a continuously shifting front instead of between said roller and the clamping member. Thus a full half of-the hide is operated upon by the roller and then the table 14 is lowered before ,said froller can travel back over the hide, the detent is releasedand the table turned through "a half circle and the I detentallowed to "snap into locking engagement'with' the set of lugs 17, then in position, to receive it, and the table is again raised to bring the hide andboard into clamping engagement with the member 24 at the opposite side of and beyond the midportion of the back anda-t a time i/vhenthe-roller 44 start- I 7 ing on its outward stroke so that pressure of the] roller upon the hide smooths and stretches out the remainder of the hide in the manner previously described in connection with the operation'on the firsthalf of the hide. The machine, of course, isnot tobe lim ited in its use to the specific method above described, as the hide may becshifted' to other positions relative to the roller, if desired. It is also preferred to impart a 'much faster speed of rotation to the roller compared to its motion of translation over the hide and this insures an efficient pressingaction of the roller as it travels slowly over the hide and permits the operator to more readily, time his operations of raising and'lowerin'g the table. The degree of pressure exertedjby the roller 7 44 is under the control'of the operator by the pressure he exerts on the treadle member 37' and the'setting-out board is preferably of fibreboard, somewhat yieldableorpliable' to prevent injury thereto by the roller and to accommodate for irregularities in thickness of thehide.
