My invention relates to valve operating mechanism for internal combustion motors.
An object of the invention is to reduce the weight and the overall height of an internal combustion motor, and hence its frontal or projected area, by so forming the valve tappets thereof as to admit of their proper operation by'the engagement therewith of the operating means or devices, the point or points.

In the embodiment of the invention selected for illustration, but one of the cylinders of multi-cylinder internal combustion motor is shown. Such cylinder 10 is provided with two intake valves 11 and two exhaust valves 12, the intake valves being disposed'at one side of a plane passing thru the axes of the cylinders and the exhaust valves 12 on the opposite sideof said plane. Each pair of valves has associated with it a valve tappet 13. V The valve tappets for the exhaust valves 12 and for the intake valves 11 are identical. Each tappet includes a shank or stem portion l l,
a head portion 15 and'an intermediate portion 16, said intermediate portion being formed by enlarging the stem 1% at or near its point of juncture with said head portion 15. The head portions 15 of the respective tappets extendlongitudinally of the motor as indicated in Fig. .1, while the intermediate portions 16 of said tappets have formed therein transverse openings 17 into which the valve operating devices 18 are adapted to extend. As illustrated, the operating devices 18 are in the form of rocker arms having intermedi ate pivot axes 20 extending parallel to the direction of the major axis of the head portions of the several tappets. At their outer ends said rocker arms are adapted to engage push valve tappet rods 21 which are inturn adapted to be re'- ciprocated by any suitable operating means (not shown). Thus organized, a single push rod 20 is provided for the proper operation of each valve tappet 13, and as the rocker arms 18 are not required to be located above the head portions of the valve tappets, obviously the overall height of the motor is very, ap-

While I have described'my invention in detail in its presentpreferred embodiment, it will be obvious to those'skilled in the art after understanding my invention, that various changes and modifications may be made thereinwithout departing from the spirit or I aim in the appended claims to coverall such modifications and changes.
That I claim is 1. In valve operating mechanism for in ter'nal combustion motors, a valve tappet including a stem portion and a laterally extending head portion, a bearing surface formed on the valve tappet stem below said head portion, and operating means engageable with said bearing surface to actuate said tappet.
