Description

y 28, 1929- Y .J. P. ROSS DRAIN TILE CLEANER Filed May 17, 1928 1 ENTOR! ATTORNEY.
Patented May 28, 1929.
mage JOSIAH P. ROSS, OF LIVERMORE, KENTUCKY.
DRAIN'IILE CLEANER.
Application filed May 17, 1928. Serial No. 278,555.,
This invention relates to drain tile clean ers, and the invention has for an object the provision of adevice which operatesasa scraper or fork for dislodging deposits in conduits, such asdrain or tile openings; and the invention has for an object the provision of novel means whereby the scraper is oseillatably mounted on a bar or element and provided with means for limiting itsmovement in one direction and bracingit while it is in operative position, the said device being provided with means whereby the scraper can be forced over the deposltand then set to operate in the manner be fore stated. I
t is a further object of this invention to provide a resilient element operative to re-v store the scraper to operative position and to provide means for protecting the said resilient element against deposits which would interfere with its operation; and it I is furthermore an object to protect such resilient element from other the operation of the cleaner. 7
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimec.
In describing the invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of a cleaner embodying the invention;
Figure 2 illustrates a similar View at right angles to that of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 illustrates an enlarged detail view'of a part of the device, partly in section;
Figure 4 illustrates a sectional View on the line H of Fig. 1, omitting the structure in advance of the handle; and
Figure 5 illustrates a detail view of one of the scrapers.
anchored. The projection 7 injury during pos ts in a dram.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention includes an advance bar or head 6having a fin or projection? at one edge preferably undercut at the end, as shown at 8, to form a clearance for an, anchor 9, here shown as an eye, to which one end of a resilient element 10, such as a spring may be acts as a guard for the spring anchorage as the device'is pushed into 'a drain, or when otherwise manipulated, and it is shown that the opposite end of the spring is. connected to an anchor 11 carried by a shank 12 ofuthe scraper 13. The shank extends into a slot 14- of the element 6 and it is oscillat-able on a pivot 1.5 extending transversely of the slot. The shankis shaped to form. a shoulder16 which abutsthe surface of the bar or element 6 and this limits the movement of the element and affords a resistance to the move:
ment of the scraper as the device is manipulated for the purpose of dislodging de- The shank may also be provided with an adjustable element 17 in the nature of a screw that is threaded in the shank and thisv screw constitutes I an abutment which when 18 of the slot will act ment of the scraper in it engages the wall to limit the move one direction.
The resilient element or spring 10 is housed in telescopically mounted inner and outer tubes 19 and 20, respectively, the
former of which has its end secured to the anchor 9 and the latter of which has its end secured to the anchor 11 in appropriate manner. As the scraperswings on its pivot, therefore, the telescopic elements will slide on each other, according to the direction of movement of the scraper.
The element 6 preferably is provided with a threaded socket 21 which receives an end of the handle bar 22 and the opposite end of the saidv handle bar may constitute amounting for a blade or shovel 23 having. a socketQt into which the V with a suitable joint between them for maintaining them together. These parts are preferably threaded at the joint and the blade. or shovel may be removed for the purpose of applying additional sections of is desirable to increase the handles when it length of the handle.
The handle bar is also supplied with a hand grip or handle 25 having a cult or collair .26 which is slidable on the handle bar handle bar extends and, through the employment of a set screw 27 threaded in the cuff, the handle may be 28 and this is supposed to have a shank similar to the shank 12 in order that it can 7 be mounted on a pivot 15 and this is illustrative of a construction alternate to that of a plain blade.
I claim: In a drain cleaner, a bar, a scraper having a shank pivot-ally mounted on the bar,
a shoulder on said shank for engaging the bar and limiting the movement of the scraper in one direction, a resilient element anchored to the shank of the scraper and to the bar in front of the scraper, telescopically mounted'elements encasing the resilient element, a projection on the front end of the bar for protecting'the said resilient element and its anchorage, and a handle bar connected to the first mentioned bar in rear of the scraper.
