Application filed March 5, 1928, Serial No. 259,026, and in Great Britain March 5, 1927.
This i vention relates to dotting mechanism for tlyer spinning, doubling, twisting and like machines, used in the production of yarns or threads, of the type or class in which the spindles and flyers are supported by bearings at their upper ends, said bearings being mounted upon a rail extending lengthwise the machine while said rail is further mounted so that it may be oscillated to bring the spindles and flyers from their vertical operating positions into inclined positions for the withdrawal of the bobbins in well. known manner.
Our present invention consists in the construction, arrangement and application of devices to be operated simultaneously with and by the oscillating spindles whereby we are enabled automatically to bring into use means for supporting the full bobbins upon the said spindles during their transit from the spinning position to the position where they are automatically released to descend onto their receiving pegs and whereby we are enabled to support the empty bobbins upon their spindles during the movement of said spindles from being in alignment with the empty bobbin pegs to being brought into their vertical and spinning position whereby greatly reducing the number of operations that had to be separately performed by hand and consequently reducing the time required for carrying out the process of dofiing.

Fig. 2 is a plan of the parts shown by Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of suflicient of a spinning and like machine to show the application of our improved parts the several devices shown being in their respective operation positions during the process of spinning.
Fig. t is a similar view to Fig. 3 but illustrates certain of the parts shown by Fig. 1 as diusted in their first movement from the pinning position into the position for carrying out the process of dofiing.
Fig. 5 is also a similar view to Figs. 3 and 4 but illustrates certain of the parts moved through the next stage into another position during the process of dotting.
Fig. 6 again shows the parts illustrated by 3 to 5 with. certain of the devices in posiguiding the threads which extend ne iiycr were :full boliibin.
Fig. 7 is also a view similar to the other figures but illustrates the spindles moved into alignment with the pegs upon which the empty bobbins were previously placed to enable said empty bobbins to be raised onto said spindles.

As is hereinbefore stated our invention is applicable for use in the type of spinning machines wherein the spindles 5 are mounted upon a rail C that is pivoted at 15 upon bearings supported by the framework of the machine in order that said spindles 5 may be moved outwardly to enable the displacin of the full bobbins by the empty bobbins. The said rail C has fixed to it in known manner several toothed quadrants 15 which mesh with their respective toothed quadrants 14- that are fixed upon a shaft 12 that extends lengthwise the machine. This shaft 12 is actuated by a handle 13 so that it may be adjusted in several positions hereinafter described. The lifter plate 2 with its washers 4 is also arranged to be actuated by the usual and well known mechanism which. reciprocates it vertically over the spindles 5 to carry out the building of the coils of yarn to form the full bobbins 3.
The said rail 9 which supports the lower ends of the spindles 5 is also actuated in known manner by having racks 11 fixed to it and arranged to slide through the bearings P in order that. by pinions 11 which are fixed upon a shaft 11. said racks 11 may be actuated by the handle 10 that is fixed upon said shaft ll by which means said racks may be adjusted in a higher or lower position also as is well known,
In connection with the said known devices we now make use of a pivoted lever 8 which is pivoted at 8 to extensions from the quadrants ]5 so that their horizontal arms a may extend tow rds the interior of the machine in i he counterbalan rm of the leve turcated form, one portion (1? having cam surface formed upon it while the other portion a" reaches downward to have an adjustin screw or bolt a lixed to it.

This shaft 7 has fixed upon it lovers '2' that extend so that at their outer ends bowls or runners 7 may be mounted for engagement with the cam surface a 011 the lever 8.
On the same bearings 10 hrough appropriate guiding parts 2 1 thereon are arranged to slide racks 22 so that these racks 22 may have fixed upon them on their upper ends a bar 23 that extends lengthwise the machine. The said racks, which support the bar 23, are actuated by pinions 21 which are fixed upon a shaft 20 that also extends lengthwise the ma chine in order that the attendant may by a hand wheel 20 actuate sa-id shaft 20 to cause the pinions to raise and lower the racks 22 to enable the bar 23 to raise the empty bobbins 3.
In addition to the vertical motion of the bar an oscillating motion is permitted to said bar by the racks 22 having their lower ends 22 pivoted to them at 22" thus when the bar 23 is raised into its highest position as shown by Figs. 7 and 8 it may move as permitted by the spindles as is hereinafter explained. The said bar 23 is arranged to raise the empty bobbins 3 from off their respective pegs 16 onto the spindles 5 with. which they correspond in number as is well known.
Lateral motion is given to the racks 22 by projecting arms 25 which extend from the step rail 9 and which act as is hereinafter explained.
A cutter bar of any well known type is mounted on the outer surface of the bar 23 so that same may be made use of for severing or cutting the threads in known manner.
In connection with the spindles 5 and when same are moved outwardly from the machine we make use of a series of fixed pegs 17 which are supported by the bracket Q0 in such positions as will enable them to receive the full bobbins when same are discharged from the spindles 5.
The actions of the several parts hercinbefore described are as follows W hen the bobbins 3 have received the full quantity of yarn the motions of the machine are then arrested and the attendant aetuates the hand lever 10 in order to lower the step rail 9 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position. shown in Fig. 4. He then lowers the lifter plate 2, and the washers l which are fixed thereto, so that same descend beyond the lower ends of the spindles 5 and so that the bases of the bobbins 3 are retained in position on the washers slightly higher than the upper edge oi. a bar 6 that is fired upon the lever arm 7 and as said bar extends lengthwise the machine itthus receives all the bobbins as is hereinafter described.
0n the parts being adjusted in this position the attendant operates the handle 13 and causes the rail G t oscillate about its pivot 15 to carry the spindles forward from the position shown in Fig. 8 to the position shown by Fig. 5, where said spindles 5 are in alignment with the pegs 17.
During the said motion of the spindles 5 the hinged levers 8 will have been carried forward by their pivotal attachments on the quadrants 15 so that their cam surfaces (1. will have carried also with them the bowls 7" and therefore the levers 7 upon which is fixed a rod 6 that extends lengthwise the machine.
When the spindles are being moved from the position shown by Fig. 3 into the position shown by Fig. 5, on reaching about midposition between the series of pegs 16 and the series of pegs 17 as is shown by Fig. 4, the end a of the lever 8 will be allowed to advance slightly forward from said position until its adjusting screw comes in contact with the rail 9 in which position it will be arrested so that the bar 6 will not move forward although the spindles 5 will continue their motion until brought into alignment with the pegs 17 as shown by Fig. 5 as above stated.
The pivotal bearings 8 tor the levers 8 permit the continued motion of the spindles while yet the movement of the bar 6 is arrested.
During the movements of the spindles from the position where the bar 6 is arrested until they are brought into alignment with the pegs 17 said arresting of the bar (3 permits said spindles to carry the bobbins from oil it so that they will, by gravity, tall onto or descend over the pegs 17 as is shown by The attendant will then move the handle l3 another step forward to carry the spindles beyond the pegs 17 as is shown by ll ig. t) and in this position he may then actuate the levers 7 to carry the bar 6 over the top ol the cob bins 3 and the pegs 1.7. in order that said bar 6 may lay hold of and carry with it the threads 7) which extend from the fiyers 19 down to the full bobbins as is shown by Fig. 6. He then returns the handle 18 so that the spindles 5 are brought from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown by 7 where said spindles 5 are in alignn'ient with the pegs 16.
The attendant then actuates the hand wheel 20 in order to rotate the shaft Qt) to raise the racks 22 and the bar which is supported by said racks, to carry said bar 2; from its position shown in 1 to 6 into the position shown by 7. By this move ment oi the bar 23 the empty bobbins 3"- will be lifted or raised from their pegs 16 onto the spindles 5 and up between the legs of th tiyi-n's 19 as shown by 7.
r1113 rim ant then will actuate the lever 13 and bring it into its position shown by Fig. 8 in which position the spindles are brought vertical and into alignment with the openi s through the washers 4t and plate 2 and to alignment with the toot-steps on the rail 9. After this by actuating the lever and raising the rail 9 into its operating position as is shown by Fig. 3 the said rail 9 is caused to bring its projecting arms against the racks 22 so that these are moved from the position where they rest against the spindles 5 into the positions where they are clear of said spindles and also clear 01' the litter plate 2.
After the several devices have been placed in their said positions the lifter plate 2 is raised to support the empty bobbins 3 upon the spindles and at such time the attendant will have also raised the pendant supporting lever 26 from the position shown by the several figures into the position shown by Figs. '2' and 8 where it raises the bar 6 in order to slacken the threads 6 sufficiently to enable a few coils of yarn to be wound upon the empty bobbins 3 prior to the final starting into continuous motion of the said spindles.
W hen the lever arms 26 are thus raised into position with the parts readjusted as is shown by Fig. 8 the attendant will then start the machine into motion to wind. a few coils of yarn onto the empty bobbin 3. He will then arrest the motion of the machine and ill actuate the cutter on the bar 23 to sever all the threads, after which he will reanjust the bar 23 and bar 6 in their normal operating positions as is shown by Fig. 5 and 1' start the machine into operation.
Such being the nature and object of our said invention What we claim is 1. In doiiing mechanism for spinning, doubling, twisting and like machines, spindies in said machine, flyers on said spindles, bearings for supporting said spindles at their upper ends, an oscillating rail upon w iich the said bearings are mounted, means for oscillating said rail, a series of stationary pegs for receiving the full bobbins from the spindles when the rail is oscillated, a bar for supporting the full bobbins on the spindles when moving iron'i their spinning positions to deposit the said bobbins onto the stationary pegs, lever arms for supporting said bar, devices ior arrestin said bar in its path and means for placing the empty bobbins onto the spindles.
