UNITED STATES .PATENT GEORGE F. VOIGHT, OF- OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, Assrsivon vTO'EOONOMYA ritonuc'rs n CORPORATION, A CORPORATION vOF cALiFoRNIA. Y 1 i i -1 FURRING ros'r.`
Y application sied ,August 26,1927. serial m1215588'.
My invention relates to improvements in furring'posts particularly adaptedV for attaching stucco wire in spaced order to the wall sheathing of stucco structures, although also useful `for other purposes; and one of the objects 'of the present invention is the provision of a spacing element normally frictionally fxedly locked onfthe forward end of avnail or driven element, but movable relatively thereon whensaid driven element is operatively projected in the .wall sheathing `for attachingfthe l stucco Wire thereto preparatory to the application of the stucco composition thereagainst.
Vith the'foregoing and other objects and purposes in view rwhich will appeary as ythe description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination andarrangement of parts and in the details ofconstruction hereinafter described and.claimed,"it'being understood that changes inthe precise embodimentpof the invention herein disclosed can be made Vwithin the scope 'of what is fclainied without departingfrom the spirit ofthe invention. In the accompanying drawingsj Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of the present -urring postsfsupporting astrand ofv stucco wire, seated against a fragmental portion of wall sheathing, preparatory to operatively projecting the driven element thereinto forsecuring the stucco wire there- Figure 2 is a face View of the device after the driven element has been projected in the wall sheathing, Vshowing the head'of the driven 'element in engagement withv the-'stucco Wire for binding 'it on the spacing "element and for holding the latter seated against the wall sheathing; i I l Figure 3 is a sectional elevation of the spacing element,'wall sheathing,stucco wire and stucco composition; .Y `Figure 4 is a viewk in elevationof the spacing element removed from the driven element; 7 f Figure 5 is a median vertical sectional view of the s acing. element and elevations of portions o thejdriven element;
Figure 6 is a'view on line 66 of Figl; Figure 7 is a view on line 7 '-7 of Fig. 5; and l Figures 8 and 9 are views. on lines 8-8 and 9-9 respectively, of Fig.l 4.
Av'Referring 'to lthel drawings Y in det-ail, d
throughout which like like parts:
The numerals l, 2 and 3, designate the Wall sheathing, stucco wire yandV my improved furring'post, respectively.,v l The wall sheathing l comprisesv prefnumerals designate erably, boards secured in closely jointetl orden-across the'face of the studding and like frame 'timbers oi the structure,- and may,l if' desired, be provided with anV eX- fterior surface covering of building paper 4 to prev-ent any moist-ure that vmay penetrate the stucco composition from penetrating to the woodwork ofthe structure. The application otthebuilding papera is however optionaha'nd the stuccowire 2 may, if preferred, be secured, `by* means of the present furringv postsB, directly to the wall sheathing, and the Vdesignations ysheathing and vvwall sheathing, when hereinafter used, shall include any paper or like' covering or surfacing thatrnaybe applied lto the wall sheathing prior to 'the'. application vof the stucco wire thereagainst'. The stucco wire 2`may comprise any wire mesh or netting found vsuitable as a fou-ndation and reinforcement for the stucco 'composition. Thewire netting commonlyknown as poultry'wire` has-been -ound vto be entirely suitable for this purpose.l i
The fui-ring' posts 3, which, form the present inventionand which areadapted for securing vrthe stucco wire i2 in; spaced relation to the wall sheathing1,7ernbody, each, a drivenfelementcomprising a lheaded nail A5 having its lower end preferablyfpointed,
and aVv spacing element formed of 'an-oblong istrip of sheet metal having a portion intermediate it's ends foldedl doubleandcomprisf ling a base, plate 6 disposed substantially at right angles lwith the nail, 5, 'the a'Xis' of which it crosses, alsub-p-late 7', which seats against the upper sideof said baseplate, and an upright member' 8 having inter- 'mediate portions struck {lat-wise in opposite directions'to form-nail'engaging bands or vloops 9, l10, and'f'11,'between a division'ot which the nail projects and againstthe inner walls'of which it bears sulliciently to become normally frictionally held against accidental movement relatively thereto, but
longitudinally sldable therebetween when said nail is forcibly projected a proper distance in the wall sheathing against which thespacing element is seated.
The arrangement of the bands 9, 10 and 11, are intended to be such relative to the upright member 8, that the nail 5 when disposed between said bands, will lie substan-` tially in the plane of said member (see Fig. 1).
The intermediate portion of the upper edge of the upright member 8 is cut away to form, on opposite sides of the nail 5, Wire seats 12 for supporting the stucco Wire Q, and wire retaining projections 13 for limit ing lateral movement of said wire on said seats. i
The base plate 6 is provided with an opening 14 to permit the passage therethrough of the nail 5 as it is driven into the wall sheathing, and toV facilitate the free movement of the nail through said plate and opening, the latter may be Aformed considerably larger than the diameter of the body of the nail (see last five figures of the drawings) The spacing element is preferably assembled on the driven element at the factory and is normally frictionally held on the forward end thereof (see Fig. 1) to resist accidental removal therefrom; and to apply the device for securing the stucco wire to the wall sheathing, itis simply necessary to project the forward end of the device including the spacing element, throughone of the interstices or meshes of the wire with the nail disposed along one side of one of the strands of said wire, and then drive the nail into the wall sheathing until the head of the nail engages and binds the strand on one of the wire seats 12, and binds the spacing element against the wall sheathing.
The furring posts may be disposed along the sheathing at such intervals as may be found best suited for the work to be performed.` I have found that spacing them about 8 inches apart provides ample fastening and spacing-for the stucco wire atV pres ent in general use for reinforcing stucco material.
After securing the stucco wire to the wall sheathing, the stucco composition 15 is preferably applied by spreading it on the sheathing and on and around the stucco wire and furring posts until a stucco coating of suitable thickness is obtained.
I claim:
1. `In means of the character described, a strip of flat metal having a spacing portion with itslower end bent substantially at right angles to form a wall engaging portion, the p spacing portion having bands struck flatwise in opposite directions to form nail holding means, the wall engaging portion being provided with an aperture to receive a nail held by the nail holdingmeans.
2. In means of the character described, a strip of flat metal having a spacing portion with its lower end bent substantially at right angles to form a wall engaging portion, the spacing portion having bands struck flatwise in opposite directions to form nail hold ing means to hold a nail substantially in the plane of the spacing portion, the wall engaging portion being provided with an aperture to receive a nail held by the nail holding means.
3. In means of the character described, a strip of flat metal having a spacing portion with its lower end bent substantially at right angles to form a wall engaging portion, the spacing portion having aband struck flatwise out of the plane thereof to yform nail holding means, the wall engaging portion being provided with Van aperture to receive a nail held by the nail holding means.
4. In means of the character described, a strip of fiat metal havinga spacing portion with a lath seat at its upper end and its entire lower end bent substantially at right angles to form a wall-engaging portion, the spacing portion having a loop struck there from to form nail-holding means, the wallengaging portion being provided with an aperture to receive a. nail held by the nailholding means.
5. In means ofthe character described, a
Vstrip of flat vmetal having a spacing portion with a lath seat at its upper end and its entire lower end uniformly bent substantially at right angles to form a wall-engaging portion, the spacing portion having a loop struck therefromV to form nail-holding means.
6. In means of the character described, a strip of flat metal having a spacing portion with its entire lower end uniformly bent substantially at right angles .to form a wallengaging portion, the spacing portion having bands struck flat-Wise in opposite directions to form nail-holding means.
