WORKING BARREL Filed May 18, 1927 Patented May 21, 1929. I
UNITED STATES 1,114,434 PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER A. OBANNON, or TULSA, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR 'ro WALTER OBANNON c0., or TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
WORKING BARREL.
Application filed May 18,
This invention relates to a working barrel,-
and particularly to a construction designed for a deep well pump whereln a proper packing and valve operation 1s required commensurate with the pressures present 1n the liquid to be pumped.
In the use of a working barrel carrying a standing valve at its lower portlon, it s important to provide the traveling valve member with packing engaging the barrel and to maintain such packing under yielding pressure in contact with thewall thereof. This result I accomplish very efiicientlylby the use of aaloos'ely mounted head WhlCll protects the packing against the entrance of sand or foreign matter and is recessed to receive a pressure device and also extended upward to permit the free flow of liquid at the discharge from the conduit communieating, with the traveling valve. This up- .ward extension of the-head involves a reduction in the diameter of its wall so as to form a space which cooperating with the discharge of liquid prevents the settling or collection of sand in the intermediate space.
which would eventually result in its working into contact with the packing surface.
Further, in the use of both the traveling and standing valves in the working barrel of a pump it is necessary to provide means to assure a proper guiding of the ball member of these valves so that its accurate relation to the seat is constantly maintained and any escape of liquid about the ball when 85 seated is prevented. These advantages are secured by my construction of the valve casing with an enclosed crown and interiorly extended guide ribs disposed to be engaged by the ball of the valve to insure its accurate 4 seating and its free movement when lifted from said seat. -It is alsofound desirable to provide the valve casing with coupling connections at its opposite ends and the series of intermediate radial ribs with flat guiding faces to engage the ball and with a chamber at the upper end of such ribs formed with a transverse stop bar to limit the upward travel of the ball.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction in which the working barrel is provided with a travel ing valve havin an upwardly extending delivery conduit t erefrom with a packing in terposed between the barrel and conduit, and
1927. Serial; No. 192,370.
barrel, such head being provided with a re-,
cess to receive a compression spring disposed beneath the delivery of the conduit and with a reduced wall extending upward above said delivery to create a proper current of liquid which will wash clear any sediment or abrasive matter which might settle into the ect the packing recess and eventually a member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of valve casing adapted for use for either the traveling or standing valve'and provided at its Opposite ends with coupling connections, such casing being formed with a series of radial ribs having contact faces extending upward from the valve seat and a stop bar extended transversely above said, faces within an enlarged portion of the casing.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel. features thereof defined by the 'appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical section and Figure 1 a continuation thereof;
Figure 2 is a detail section of the valve casing;
-Figure 3 is a section Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a similar view on the line 4 4 of Figure 2. Y
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several fig- 'ures of the drawing.
The numeral 10 designates the working barrel of a pump which ma be of any deslred constructiomor siz'e depending upon the capacity thereof for pumping pur oses. The upper end of this barrel is pIOVldB with a discharge bushing 11 having a threaded connection at 12 therewith and dischar e on the line 3 -3 of passages 13 while the central portion of t e ushing forms a bearin 14 for the valve stem or rod 15 which 18 connected by a coupling 16 with a sucker rod of the usual type as indicated at 17. The lower end of r t e stem 15 is threaded into a ported coupling 18 the discharge openings 19 of which are at the sides thereof. This coupling at its lower end has a threaded connection with a pipe or conduit 20 extending upward from the traveling valve 21. This valve is a particular construction and will be. more specifically described. Surrounding the conduit 20 and enga ing the walls of the barrel 10 a proper pac ing 22 is provided and in order to secure the necessary contact this packing is held under compression by means of a head 23 which is slidingly mounted at 24 upon the conduit and has a sliding contact with the inner face of the barrel. This head is formed with a downwardly tapering recess 25 adapted to receive a compression spring 26 disposed between the base of the recess and the lower portion of the coupling 18. The walls of the head above this recess are reduced in diameter as at 27 so as to properly space them from the discharge ports of the coupling and provide an annular chamber by whichan upward movement of the liquid is always maintained and the collection of sand or sediment in the lower portion of the head ractically prevented. Such result is also acilitated by car ing u ward the reduced portion 27 of the ead a ove the coupling, as indicated 'at 28 where the beveled edge 29 thereof merges into contact with the inner wall of the barrel. The conduit is provided beneath the packing 22 with a seat member 30 loosely mount- 7 ed thereon and one or more cupwashers 31 mounted upon the conduit and held in position thereon by the threaded connection of the traveling valve with the lower end of the conduit. The lower end of the barrel 10 is provided with my im roved construction of. standing valve 32 w ich has con led thereto the usual packing cups 33 an in- 15 take 34.
larged interiorly threaded o ning 37 which is adapted torecive the retaining member 38 which engages and supports the valve seat 39 in position. The ange 40- of this seat is adapted to engage .the under face of an interior flange 41 at the lower portion of the casing and'from which a series of radial interiorly extending ribs "41;,extend' upwards "These ribs merge at their lower 1; ends 42 into the flange 41 and the inner or contact face 43 thereof is flattened or finished so as to secure an accurate and smooth contact with the ball 44 of the valve member. The upper ends of these ribs are beveled as at 45 and terminate at a chamber 46 which permits free egress of the liquid about the ball when in raised position and contacting with the transverse bar 47 formed in this chamber 46 so that a free flow of liquid is obtained at all times. 76
The valve casing with. its guide ribs is adapted to be formed as a casting and these ribs are initially molded with an apex as indicated by dotted lines at 48 in Figure 4. This apex is subsequently removed by grind- 8O ing or other methods so as to form the final curved. face 43 for guiding contact with the ball of the valve. To facilitate this molding one of the faces 49 of the ribs may be inclined and the opposite face 50 formed straight.
In the method of producing these castings they may be formed from steel in which event it is: desirable to subject them to a picklin operation in order to remove core to sand be ore the machining of the ribs and to reduce thetool expense in the production of the completed casing.
The standin valve, as before stated, is substantially t e same in construction as 05 the traveling valve, differing only therefrom in the provision of a reduced extericrly threaded coupling 51 at its upper portion.
It will be understood that this construction of valve is adapted for use as either a traveling or standing valve and also for other purposes wherein a crowned valve of this character is found desirable. 'The 0 eration of the invention will'be apparent mm the foregoing description from 1 5 which it will be seen that the head member being tensioned is always in proper contactwith the packing and protects the same against the entrance 'of sand while the upward extension of this head provides a seat 1 0 for the tensioning spring and a wall extending parallel to the discharge from the traveling valve so "as to create a proper flow at thls point which will prevent the collection of sediment. 'The traveling and standin valve members also cooperate in a pump 0 this character designed for deep well work by insuring a proper seating of the ball member to prevent leakage of liquid and loss of lifting capacity in the movement of 1 the parts in one direction and to provide a free movement of these valve members in an op osite direction of travel. The invention t erefore presents a simple, eflicient and economically manufactured construction of 3; working barrel designed to secure the'most eflicient results.
" 'While the specific construction of the sev-' cral parts has been shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as 7 out eparting from the-spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent is:
1. In a working barrel, a traveling valve having a delivery conduit therefrom, a packing interposed between the barrel and conduit, a head having a recess and slidingly mounted upon the upper portion of the conduit to engage said packing, means disposed within said recess for pressing said head toward the packing, and an extension from said head extended upward and spaced from the discharge of the conduit and spaced therefrom.

In a working barrel, a traveling valve having a delivery conduit therefrom, a packing interposed between the barrel and conduit, a ported coupling at the discharge of said conduit, a head having a spring enclosing recess surrounding the conduit and changes and alterations may be made withslidabli; mounted upon said conduit toengage t e packing, a spring engaging said coupling, enclosed by said recess wlthin said head, and a reduced extension from said head extending upward above said ported coupling.
packing interposed between said conduit and barrel, a head slidingly engaging both the conduit and barrel with its upper portion reduced in thickness and extended above the deliver from the conduit, and means disposed wlthin the head for retaining said head in contact with the packing.
4. In a working barrel, a traveling valve having a delivery conduit therefrom, a
5. In a working barrel, a traveling valve comprising a casm having its upper end threaded and uno structed and inter or guide ribs terminating in a flange at its lower end, a valve seat supported in contact with said flange, a ball member cooperating with said seat and ribs, a rigid conduitextended from the threaded upper end of said casing and provided with a discharge opening, a coupling disposed at said opening, a
packing surrounding saidconduit and engaging the inner face of'the barrel, and a pressure head en aging said packing and disposed intermediate said coupling and the I valve.
In testimon whereof I afiix my signature.
