lIMPROVEMENT IN TICKETS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J oHN MILES SAVIN, of the city and county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Passengers Tickets for Railways and Analogous Uses, of which the,

following is a specification Myinventon relates especially to that class of' tickets which are known as ticket-draw-` backs, and are issued by the conductors to those who, paying on board the train, are charged in excess of regular fares, and to whom a ticket is issued entitling them, on presentation of the ticket at prescribed places, to receive a drawback for the whole or part oi' such excess.

Duplex ticket-drawbacks have been in common use. These are printed in duplicate, upon connected tickets, placed in such relation to one another thatin punching any name or number on one the corresponding name or number on the other will be punched. When a passenger pays his fare the conductor punches theduplex ticket, and, retaining one section, gives the other to the passenger, who, on presenting it, as prescribed, is paid his drawback, and the agent takes up his ticket, and forwards it with his account as a voucher. Railway companies who retain these tickets, after settlement ot' the agents account, iind that they are liable to be stolen and repaid by other agents. It has, therefore, been forced on some companies to destroy the tickets on settlement, after which the agents are left without vouchers, and the company without the means ot' reviewing a settlement. Besides this, these tickets have been retained by passen gers, and used indefinitely for traveling between stations intermediate to Vthose punched on said tickets.

My'invention intended to provide against these objections,-` and aiord a more perfect protection to all parties concerned. To this end my invention consists in the use of triplex ticketdrawbacks, printed on one card or sheet, so reversed that the three corresponding names or numbers will be punched at one operation.

In the annexed drawing, making a part of this specication, Figure l is a triplex ticketdrawback. Fig. 2 is the part of the ticket given to the passenger. Fig. 3 is the agents coupon or clerks check. Fig. 4 is the conductors coupon.

The several coupons are printed in reverse alternately, and are otherwise identical, except thc Notice, which gives the proper directions to the conductor, the passenger, and the agent, which dii'er,so that one can never be `used for the other. The three may be bound in a book, the conductors coupon being r attached to the stub. When a passenger pays his fare the conductor punches the two stations between which the fare is paid; also, the date and the train number, the latter always designating the direction the train is moving, as each trainhas a number each way, by which it is always known. He also designates the amount of drawback by punching all but the one designating the amount of drawback to be refunded, which is -secured to the passenger by the conductor tearing ofi' and handing him the two coupons shown in Fig. 2, retainingthe other to enable him to make up his waybill. The two coupons are worthless if sevf ered. When the agent redeems them they,

are in like .manner forwarded with his account asa voucher, and when -his account is exame ined the drawback-coupon is to be torn oil'V and destroyed,'and the clerks check may be filed away to be used in settling with the conductor when he accounts for his book, and` preserved as a voucher, as in that form, sepa, rated from the drawback-coupon, it is worthless.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A triplex ticket-drawback, consisting of a conductors and a drawback coupon, and a clerks check, so printed in reverse that when folded the same names and numbers on the three coupons may be simultaneously punched, and when redeemed and accounted for the drawback-coupon may be destroyed, and the others retained as vouchers, substantially as set forth.
