Description

UNTTED sTaTns AT T orion JOHN B. CORNELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SIDEWALK-PAVEMENT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,138, dated April 2S, 1857; Ressued September 7, 1858, No. 596.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CORNELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a united metallic street-gutter, curb, and sidewalk-pavement which can be used to great ladvantage as a covering for the exposed portions of apartments situated under street-sidewalks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
A section of a street gutter and of a curb c, I cast in one piece and of substantially the shape represented in Figure 2. The curved under surface 'of the gutter-portion of the said combined gutter and curb may be so securely cemented to the top of the wall CZ, which forms the outer boundary of an apartment under a street sidewalk, as to prevent the entrance of water or moisture from the street. A projecting per* forated lanch e, from the top of the curbportion of the said combined gutter and curb, receives the outer ends of the castiron plates a, a, which cover the said sube terranean apartment, and whose corrugated upper surfaces form the foot-way or sidewalk for pedestrians. The said plates a, a, may be secured to the flanch of the curb by means of screws inserted from below, as represented in the drawings, or by any other suitable means. A suitable manner of connecting the edges of the plates a, a, to each other, is clearly represented by Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. The shoulder on the edge of one of said plates, which receives and supports the edge of the adjoining plate, may have a grooved or guttershaped upper surface, for the purpose of plates.
-tion of any suitable water-proof cementing substance for more securely uniting said The inner ends of the plates a, a, may be supported in any suitable manner. Flanches may be cast on the under sides of the side-walk plates a, a, to give them the proper degree of strength and stiffness. This manner of covering apartments under street side-walks, will render them more secure against the entrance of moisture from the street, and will cause their ceilings to be nearly two feet higher than they would be if they were inclosed in the usual manner.
Fig. 4, of the accompanying drawings represents a street-gutter, curb, and side walk plate, all cast in one piece.
Having thus fully described my united metallic street-gutter, curb, and side-walk pavement, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Casting in one piece, a section of a street-gutter and curb of suitable shape and proportions, substantially as herein set forth.
2. I also claim forming the sidewalk pavement of a series of metallic plates a, a, when the said plates are combined with each other and with the aforesaid metallic street-gutter and curb, substantially as herein set forth.
The above specification of my new and improved united metallic side-walk pavement, curb, and street gutter, signed, and witnessed this 27th day of February, 1857.
JOI-IN B. CORNELL. Witnesses:
