This invention relates to latch construc tion particularly suitable for use on ice b oX-` es, refrigerator doors, cabinets and the like. The main Objects of this invention are to provide an improved forni of latch or b olt which can be locked with a key and which remains securely locked until a particular forni of simple key is used for unlocking the same. j

i' The lopposite yend of the bolt 27 is in the form of a round shank 34 which haszva stiif Vhelical compression spring 35 wound therearound. One end of the com ression spring 35 bears against the inner si e of the easing A1v and the other endthereof bears against the vrectangular portion of the bolt 27 as shown most' c early in Figs. 2 and 4.
Means are provided for preventing the retraction of the bolt 27 when the locking barrel has been turned so as to engage the shoulder 24 of the head 23 with the casing 1. Said means comprises a pawl 36 in a form of a bell crank pivoted at 37 on the under side of the casing 1. The other arm 38 of the bell crank extends out and is positioned closely adjacent to the head 23 and is normally urged to the position shown in Fig. 2 by a helical compression spring 39. \Vhen the head 23 has rotated a half revolution from the position shown in Fig. 2 it bears against the arm 38 and swings the bell crank on its pivot 37 so as to shift the paw] 36 toward the bolt 27 and swing the end of the pawl back of the shoulder 40.
In the operation of this latch when in an unlocked condition the handle 6 is grasped and raised upwardly causing the finger 26 to bear against the rear side of the aperture 28 and shift the bolt 27 against the action of the spring 35, which is to the right as viewed in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Upon release of the handle 6 the spring returns the bolt 27 to its normal locking position. If the door of the article to which this device is attached is slammed shut without regard to the handle 6 being raised, the bolt 27 is pushed to a retracted position by the roller 30 contacting with the inclined face of the catch 31 in the usual manner. Such retraction of the bolt however does not operate the handle 6 on account of the slot 29 in which the end of the finger 26 slides.
When it is desired to lock this device the key 19 is inserted into the slot 13 of the barrel 9 and pushed inwardly a sufficient distance to move the protruding ends of the locking pin 14 out of their respective notches 17, at the same time bringing thc notches 21 in the opposite sides of the key 19 into registry with the inturned flange 11 of the sleeve 10, thereby permitting the key 19 to be rotated relatively thereto. Rotation of the key 19 a halt revolution, rotates the barrel a half revolution thereby causing the undercut shoulder 24 of the head 23 to engage the underside of the marginal edge of the opening 25 in casing 1. Such rotation of the head also causes the arm 38 of the bell crank pawl 36 to be cammed on its pivot 37 a sufficient distance to move the pawl'36 back of the shoulder 4() thereby locking the bolt 27 against retraction.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without de arting from the spirit of this invention as defined Vby the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bolt axially slidable on said casing, a handle pivoted on said casing for operating said bolt, loeiiing mechanism for preventing the operation of said handle, and a paivl actuated by said locking mechanism lor engaging said bolt to prevent the sliding movement thereof.` i
2. A device of the class described eom prising a casing, a bolt axially slidable on said casing, a shoulder on said bolt, a handle pivoted on said casing for retracting said bolt, locking mechanismior securing said handle to said casing to prevent pivotal n'ioviunent thereol", and a pavvl actuated by said locking' mechanism to engage said shoulder for preventing the retraction of said bolt when said handle is locked to said casing.
3. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bolt axially slidable on said casing, a shoulder on said bolt, a handle pivoted on said casing for retracting said bolt, locking mechanism mounted on said handle for securing said handle to said casing to prevent pivotal movement thereof, and a paivl actuated by said locking mechanism to engage said shoulder :tor preventing the retraction of said bolt when said handle is locked to said casing.

A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bolt axially slidable on said casing, yielding means for normally urging said bolt to one position, a handle for retracting said bolt, a lock for securing said handle in inoperative position, and a paivl actuated by said lock for preventing the retracting of said bolt When said handle is locked in inoperative position. y
5. A locking mechanism of the class de scribed comprising a barrel having a transverse slot therethru, a transversely disposed pin slidable in said slot axially of said baia rel, the opposite ends of said pin protruding beyond the sides of said barrel, a collar surrounding the outer end of said barrel, the inner end ot said collar having diametri cally opposed notches for receiving the pro truding ends of said pin, a compression spring bearing against said pin for normally urging said pin toward said collar, said barrel having an annular opening around the inner end of said collar for permitting said barrel to be rotated on :its axis relative to said collar when said pin is out of engagement with said notches.

A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bolt axially slidable on said casing, yielding means i'or normally urging said bolt to one iosition, a handle pivoted on said casing, a inger on said handle for engaging and retracting saidbolt against the `action of said yielding means, said bolt having an aperture therethru for receiving the end of said linger and a slot communicating With said aperture for permitting the end o'l' said finger to slide therein Without moving said handle.
