' PROTECTOR FOR RECEPTACLES Filed May 17, 1928 INVENTOR MW WW Patented May 7, 1929.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SCHWER, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
PROTECTOR FOR RECEPTACLES.
Application. filed May 17,
My invention relates to protecting devices. that are particularly suitable for use in connection with waste paper baskets, but which is also capable of use in connection with various other articles.
It is common experience that oilice furniture is scratched and marred through the coming into contact therewith of Waste paper baskets, and this scratching or marring is more pronounced and more likely to occur by reason of the fact that the upper portions of Waste baskets are flared slightly so that the rims thereof contact with the ofiice furniture.
Gne obyect of my invention is to provide a protective covering that may be readily applied and removed to waste baskets of various forms and which is nevertheless not likely to become accidentally displaced.
Another object of my invention is to provide a protective covering which will be of neat appearance and will snugly fit the rims of waste baskets.
Still another object of my invention is to simplify and improve generally protective devices of the character referred to.
One form which my invention may take is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle of the wire basket type with a protective covering applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the protective covering; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view, on an enlarged scale, through the covering and one of its fastening members, and Fig. l is a similar view, but taken at a point removed from a fastening member. 1
A. wire basket 5 is shown having a hooplike rim portion 6 at its upper edge about which a protective covering 7 is designed to fit to guard furniture against injury through contact with the edge of the basket. The covering may also serve to protect the basket itself from injury.
lhe covering device 7 is preferably of rubber, so that it will have adequate resiliency to produce the proper cushioning efi'ect and to enable coverings of given sizes to fit baskets of various diameters. The edges of the covering are beaded as indicated at 8 so that it will more snugly engage the rim of a basket 1928. Serial in. 278,434.
and be more likely'to retain a neat circular contour. 1
Strap-like extensions 9 are carried by one edge of the covering 7 and are provided with sockets 10 that engage with ball members 11 mounted in one wall of the covering to form a snap fastening.- Thus the covering may be readily applied to and removed from the basket. This fastening insures that the covering will not become displaced'through handling of the waste basket as when emptying the same.
The straps 9 may be dispensed with if de sired and the inherent resiliency of the covering and its beaded portions 8 relied upon to hold it in place upon the upper edge of a waste receptacle or the like, whether of baslqetlike or other form.
It will be understood that fabric or other.
material may be substituted for the covering 7.
I claim as my invention:
1. A protective covering for receptacles having beaded edges, comprising an elastic member of channel form with its edges nor mally disposed in proximity to one another, and. means for detachably connecting said edges together, comprising strap-like memb rs disposed in relatively spaced relation, the said strap-like members being secured at one end to one edge of the covering and having their other ends extending past the other edge of the covering and detachably connected to the covering.
2. Protective coverings for rimmed receptacles, comprising a channeled device of annular form, straps secured to the outer edge of, said device and extending past the other edge to the inner periphery of the device, and a detachable connection for securing the latter named end to said inner periphery.
3. A protector for the rims of wire baskets, comprising a covering member of channel form. for fitting over the rim of a basket, and securing members connected to the edges of said covering and arranged to extend through openings in the side of the basket.
In testimony whereof I, the said JOHN SoHwnn, have hereunto set my hand.
