UNITED STATES JOSE-PH ROBINSON, 01" NEW YORK, N. Y. 7
AUTOMATIC TRAIN-PIPE CONNECTER.
Application file'd September 17, 1921, Serial No. 501,233. Renewed. March 5, 1929'.
the supports for carrying the connectors.
' riveted or otherwise secured to the The invention resides in the combinations, arrangements and constructions hereinafter described, pointed out in, the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which v Figure 1 is a si'de'elevation of my improvement. In this view a part of the bracket and the resilient support is broken away.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan view of the coupling head and interchange device shownin Figure 1, and
Figure 3 1s a rear view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1. 1
Referring now to the drawings 7 My improvement comprises any suitable form of coupling head A having at its center an opening in which is rotatably mounted the enlarged forward end 4- of a hollow-fitting or conduit 5 which threadingly receives at its rear end an interchange head6 having approximately the contour of the standard air brake hand hose coupling, shown, for example, at 70 in theForsyth Patent 740,749, October 6, 1903. The interchange head G-is located between the supporting mechanism hereinafter described and diverges laterally of, the coupling head A immediately adjacent the rear side of the latter. 7 the fitting 5 is provided with a hexagon portion to facilitate its assembly into'the interchange head '6, and at 8 the interchange head is providedwith a projection or finger 9 adapt-"- ed to engage the rear side of the head to limit the forward movement of the fitting 5 in the'head and to position the interchange head 6 longitudinally with respect to the coupling head A. The aforesaid enlarged forward end of the fitting 5*forms a shoulder against which a flange or projection 10 abuts, the flange being formed integralwiththe head or otherwise secured thereto and extendingilaterallyof -the opening in the head in which the fitting 5 is mounted.
On opposite sides of 6 and preferably above and below the same, I extend through the coupling head A the prongs 11 of the member B, the prongs being head and being formed integral with a pair of horizontally disposed straps 12 placed apart in is prevented.
the interchange head the horizontal plane as shown particularly in Figure 2.- The straps 12 terminate at their rear ends in a vertically extending my co-pending application Serial No. 364,-
101, for improvements in automatic train pipe connecters filed lYlarch 9th, 1920. A suitable supporting spring D is anchored to the'bracket C by the aforesaid tie rod 1 411111 serves to maintain the coupling head A at the limit of lts forward movement.
} For a fuller description and illustration of the tie rod 14, the bracket C and the spring D reference is made to the above mentioned.
eo-pending application. The novel f'eature's of these elements not being claimed in the present application they are not detailedly illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
At opposite sides the bracket C is pro' vided witha trunnion 15 which extends lat erally throughian elongated lock or opening 16 formed in the straps 12 0f the member B,:the straps the t-runnions or projections 15. By this arrangement the member 13' is supported on the bracket C and undue rotation of the coupling head A about itslongitudinal axis In Figure 2 the usual train-pipe hose 17 is shown provided at its lower end with the ordinary and well'known standard hand operated hose coupling 18, the latter being shown connected into the interchange head 6 of. my improvement which operation is accomplished by rotating the interchange head 6 upwardly in the couplingliced Alto bring itinto coupling position with the coupling 18 whereupon it is rotated downwardly into the interlockedposition with the coupling. as shown in' Figure2.--' hen it is desired to effect connection between a car having my improvement and one not provided therewith, the hose 1'? is disconnected from the interchange head 6 by rotating the latterupwardly and is then connected across in front of the coupling head A into the train pipe hose of the unequipped car. The rebeing adaptedto slide upon verse of this operation will assemble the I in an opposing coupling head. The gasket pling in said train is indicated at 19.
What I claim is:

An automatic train pipe connector having in combination, a coupling head, a support therefor, a train pipe hose having thereon a coupling adapted to be connected to the hose of a car not equipped with an automatic connector, and means to detachably connect the train pipe hose to said head, said means including a fitting rotatably mounted in the head, a laterally diverging interchange head connected to the fitting between said support and said coupling head, the interchange head F being rotatable with the fitting, said coupling 111 said tram pipe hose being arranged to be connected into said interchange head by rotating the latter and said fitting.
2. An automatic train pipe connector having in combination, a coupling head, a support therefor, a train pipe hose, and means to detachably connect the train pipe hose to said head, said means including a fittin rotatably mounted in the head and lined against longitudinal movement therein, a laterally diverging interchange head connected to the fitting between said support and said coupling head, theinterchange head being rotatable with the fitting,
pipe hose arranged to be connected into said interchange head by rotating the latter and said fitting.
3. An automatic train pipe connector hav ing in combination, a perforated coupling head, a hollow fitting rotatably mounted in said perforation and having a shoulder, a laterally extending projection engaging said shoulder to limit the movement rearwardly of said fitting in said perforation, a support for said head, a train pipe hose having at one end a couplin and means to detachably connect said coupling to said fitting, said means comprising an interchange head having substantially the contour of a standard air brake hand hose coupling, the interchange head being connected to and rotatable therewith and diverging laterconduit and a cousaid fitting connected to said fitting and rotatable-therewith, a support for said coupling head positioned at the rear of said interchange head and including a member which spans the interchange head and is connected to said coupling head on opposite sides of the interchange head, and a train pipe hose having at one end a coupling adapted to be connected into said interchange head upon rotation of y the latter and said fitting.
5. An automatic train pipe connector having in combination, acoupling head pro- Vided with an opening, an abutment extending into the path of said opening, a fluid iaving an enlarged forward end rotatably occupying said opening and bearing directly upon said abutment, an interchange head diverging laterally of said coupling head and threadingly connected to said fitting and rotatable therewith, said interchange head being provided with .a projection adapted to engage said coupling head to limit the forward movement of said fitting in said opening, a support for said coupling head positioned at the rear of said interchange head, and a train pipe hose having a coupling adapted to be connected. into said interchange head by rotating the latter and said fitting.
6. An automatic train pipe connecter having in combination, a perforated coupling head, a hollow fitting rotatably mounted in said perforation, a support for said head, a train pipe hose having v p and means to detachably connect said coupling to said fitting, said means comprising an interchange head having substantially the contour of a standard air brake hand hose coupling, the interchange head nected to said fitting and rotatable there with and diverging laterally of said coupling head immediately adjacent the rear side of the latter.
at one end a couplin being con In testimony whereof I hereunto my V signature.
