This invention relates generally to fasteners or latches designed particularly for use with vehicle doors and consists in certain novel features of construction, combinat-ions and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings, the nu meral 1 designa-tes a door preferably of a vehicle body, having a pillar 2 that is con- 25 nected at its inner -and outer edges to. suitable sheet metal panels 3 and 4 respectively, and which supports a channel-shaped strip 5, constituting a runway for -a vertically, movable glass window panel 6. As shown the pillar 2 is preferably constructed of sheet metal and is substantially Z-shaped in cross section, while the strip 5 is also constructed of sheet' metal and holds a suitable chanpel-shaped felt guide -7 for the Window ane p With such an arrangement of parts, Wherein the pillar 2 has a very small cross section, the occupants of the vehicle will have an increased vision and a wider glass panelv may be employed than that used in the ordinary type of door constructions. However, it is necessary to provide a particular type of latch mechanism for use with such a door construction and, in the present instance, we provide an inner latch assembly designated at 8, which is mounted upon the panel 3 while an outside latch assembly 9 is mounted upon the outer panel 4. Both of these assemblies are connected to and operate a latching bolt 1() which preferably straddles the guideway for the vertically movable glass panel 6.
V The inner latch assembly 8 and the specific construction of the latching bolt 10 will not be described herein as they form the subject matter of our co-pending application Serial No. 123,535 filed July 19, 1926, the present case being a division thereof.
Referring now to Figures 2'and 3 in which the'outer latch assembly 9- is shown, thereis provided an outer case plate 11 secured to the outer panel 4 in any suitable manner and to which a cover plate 12 is spaced therefrom and secured thereto b means of suitable flanged portions 18. cated between and having its end portions journaled in suitable openings in the-case plate and cover plate is a hub member 14 provided with a squared opening to receive the shank 15 of an outer handle 16. f
Rigidly mounted upon the hub 14 and 'adapted to turn therewith in a rearwardly direction is a roll back 17 normally abutting againstI a struck-up projection 18 of the case plate and held against the same by means of a spring 19 suitably mounted upon the case plate 11.
Rigidly mounted Vupon the outer end portion of the rollback 17 is a lug 20 which is detachably connected to the rear endv ortion of a link 21, the forward portion of t ie link being connected to the outer end of the latching bolt 10.
It will be apparent that by turning the. handle 16 in a rearwardly direction, the roll back v17 together with the link 21 will be moved rearwardly, retracting the locking bolt 10.
For locking the handle 16 against rotary movement, we provide a slide 22, the upper portion of which is interposed between the cover plate and roll back. This slide is provided at its up er. end with an elongated opening 23 stradilling the hub 14, while d1- rectly below the opening 23 is a struck-out portion 24 which is ada ted to'engage a projection 25 upon the ower end of the rbll back when the slide is in its upper position. A spring arm 26 is secured to the inside portion of the slide and is adapted to move therewith. As shown, .this spring is designed to enter a depressed'portion 27 1n the case plate when the struck-out portion 24 engages the pro'ection 25 on the roll back.
Preferably the ower end portion of. the slide 22 is enlarged as at 28 and is provided with la transversely extending slot 29 for receiving an eccentrically mounted stud '30 of a. standard lock mechanism 31. The lower edge o1 the slide 22 is provided with an inturned flange 32, which is slotted on both sides thereof as at'33, to engage the edges of an opening 34 located in the lower portion of the case plate 11.
For securing the lock mechanism in place, there is provided a housing 35 having a portion 36 spaced from and extending substantially .parallel to the case plate 11. The housing 35 is provided with the flanged portions 37 extending from the spaced portion 36 and secured to the case plate in any suitable manne-r, while both the case plate and portion 36 are provided with aligned openings for receiving the lock mechanism 31.
With the slide in its lower position the roll back will be free to move in a rearwardly direction. However when the stud 3() of the lock mechanism 31 is "rotated, the
slide will be moved into its upper position whereupon the struck-out portion 24 will engage the projection 25 of the roll back and prevent any rearward movement of the same.
While it is believed that 'from the foregoing description the nature and advantage of our invention will be readily apparent, we desire to have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to the specific construction herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
-lVhat we claim as our invention is:
1. In a latch mechanism, the combination with a case plate, and a roll-back on the case plate having a' hub anda projection, of clogging means for said roll-back including a key controlled eccentric on the case plate in spaced relation to the roll-back, and dog carrying and operating means between said eccentric and roll-back including a reciprof ing slot receiving said eccentric, and a projection on said element intermediate of said slots engageable with the roll-back projection aforesaid upon reciprocation of said clement,
3. In a latch mechanism, the combination with a case plate, and a roll-back on the case plate having a hub and a projection, of clogging means for said roll-back including a key controlled eccentric on the case plate in spaced relation to said roll-back, a reciprocating element having a longitudinally extending slot receiving said 'roll-back hub whereby said'element may be guided by said hub, having a transversely extending slot .receiving said eccentric whereby said element may be reciprocated by said eccentric, having a projection engageable with said roll-back projection when said element is reciprocated whereby said roll-back may be rendered inoperative, and a spring between said case plate and element retarding the movement of said element and serving to hold the same in adjusted position in respect to said case plate and against rattling.
