` for dispensing or delivering liquids from a lio supply tank to containers, and the particular embodiment of the invention herein illustrated and described is especially applicable for use on the hose or flexible tube utilized for delivering gasoline to the tanks of automobiles.
The principal objects of my invention are to generally improve upon and simplify the construction of the existing forms of lling spouts, to provide a device of the character referred to that will automatically cut oi the supply of liquid when the receptacle into which the liquid is being delivered becomes full, or reaches a predetermined level, ind which arrangement enables the attendant o'rperson dispensing the liquid to place the nozzle in the tank and then attend to other duties, `with the assurance that the flow of liquid will be cut ofi befdre the receptacle overdows.
A further object of my invention is to provide a filling spout of the character referred to and to arrange thereon means whereby the valve that controls the flow of liquid thru the spout lmay be, by manual operation, permitted to close at any desired time during the How of liquid thru' the spout, thus enabling the flow of liquid to be very accurately regulated and controlled.
Further objects of my invention are to provide an automatically acting filling spout that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and which will be very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a filling spout of my improved construction.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken lengthwise thru the approximate center of the spout and showing the parts thereof set so as to permit liquidto flow thru the spout.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is 'an enlarged detail section taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, designates the body of the spout which is in the forni of a tube and extending downwardly and outwardly from the forward end of the tubular body 10, is a tubular member 11 that is adapted. to be inserted in the filling nipple or opening in the tank of receptacle that is to receive the liquid that passes thru the spout.
The. rear end of the tubular body 10 is adapted to be connected to a hose or dexible tube, (not shown).
Arranged within the tubular body 10 is a partition 13 having a port 14, the edge of which is tapered to form a valve seat and adapted to rest on said seat and to control the iow of liquid thru the spout, is a downwardlyopening spring-held valve 15 thatv is carried by a stem 16.
. Formed in the lower portion of the body 10, immediately below the port 14, and valve 15, is an opening 17 that is normally closed by a screw cap or plug 18. v'
The upperv portion of valve stem 16 eX- tends thru a gland or stuffing box 19 in the top of the body 10 and the upper end of said valve stem is adapted to bear against the ,underside of a short hand lever 2O that is positioned above the tubular body 10, and the forward end of which lever is pivotally connected to an inverted U-shaped guard 21 that is formed integral with the forward end' of the body 10 and the upper end of the tubular member 11.
Guard 21 is provided with an aperture 22 which enables the spout to be suspended on a hookor the like while not in use. Formed in the lower portion of tubular member 11, is a conical partition 23, and formed thru ,the wall of said member 11, immediately above this partition, is a series of apertures 241, which serve as openings for the liquid that passes thru the spout.
The inner or rear portion of the depending tubular member 11 is provided with a series of spaced notches 11a, any one of which is adapted to receive the ange on the upper end of the lling nipple of a gasoline tank and thus, the position of the lower end of the spout 11L relatively to the top of the tank in which said spout is positioned, may be regulated.
Formed integral with the` end of the conical partition 23, is a tubular member that extends axially upward thru the upper portion of member 11 and thru the top thereof, and surrounding the upper portion of this tubular member is a concentric wall 2G l that is formed integral with said tubular member 25 and with the top of the member 11 and the lower portion of the annular chamber 27, between said wall 26 and tubular member 25, serves as a pocket for an expansive coil spring 28.
Arranged to slide freely upon the upper portion of the tubular member 25 and within the upper portion of chamber 27, is a short sleeve or collar 29 provided on its upper edge with an outwardly., projecting l-shaped flange 30, and which sleeve or collar is normally urged upward under the influence of spring 28.
Arranged to slide freely thru tubular member 25, is a rod 31, the lower end of which carries a float 32 and which latter, occupies a position in the lower portion of tubular member l1 below the partition 23 therein.
Pivotally mounted on a lug 33 that is formed on top of tubular member 11, is a dog or pawl 34, the point of which is adapted to engage over the edge of the tf-shaped ilange on the'lsleeve or collar 29 to retain the latter in its lowermost position when the device is set for use,and secured to and projecting upwardly from the rear end of this pawl is a ilat spring 35, and formed integral with and projecting forwardly from the upper end of this spring, is a pair of pins 36 that extend thru loops or eyes 3'? and the latter projecting upwardly from a small collar 38 that is arranged for sliding movement on the upper portion otubular member 25, and which upper portion is slightly reduced in diameter, thus forming a shoulder 39 on the tubular member 'between the collars 30 and 38.
Arranged on the reduced portion of the tubular member 25 and resting on the shoulder 39, is the lower end or a small coil springI 40, the upper end thereof bearing against the underside oi collar 38.

Projecting rearwardly from the upper end oi this spring arm are lingers 44, that are spaced apart so as to occupy positionsto the sides of the upper portion ot rod 31 and said fingers are slotted as designated by 45, in order to receive the ends of a pin 46 that is seated in said rod 31. 21 and the arms formed by the bifurcation of the forward end of lthe lever are adapted to bear ont-op of the collar 29.
The intermediate portion of the arm or lever 47 is provided with a loop 48 `for the accommodation of the valve stem 16 and to the rear of this loop, the arm or lever is provided with trunnions 49 that are journaled in suitable anti-friction bearings 50, prei:`- erably with ball type. l
The rear end of the arm 47 terminates below the rear end of handle 2O and the rear portion of said arm bears against the in'- clined face 52 that is formed on the upper portion of a hook 53 which latter is pivotally connected toits upper end to the rear portion of handle 20. Arranged behind the hook 53, and normally urging the same toward the arm 39, is a spring 54.

'i 'lll/'hen the parts of the filling nozzles are set for use, or the nozzle is opened to permit the iiow of iluid therethru, handle 29 is moved downward until hook 53 engages hook 55, thus locking the handle in its depressed position, and as the handle is thusmoved downward, the valve stem 16 will be engaged-and moved downward, thereby unseating the valve 15 so as to permit iluid to iiow thru the nozzle.
As handle 20 is moved downward, plunger 59 is simultaneously pressed downward and the lower end thereof engages the inturned rear ends of the rods 58, thereby locking the latter and causing the inturned ends oi said rods to bear on collar 38 and move the same downward against the resistance ofiered by spring 40, and said collar 38 isjthus/Y moved downward until the inner end 'be swung on its fulcrum, the bearings 50, so

As collar 29 is thus moved downward, the inner end of dog 34 will engage over the edge of fiange 30, and thus, the two collars38 and 29 will be retained in set position by the dogs 41 and 34 and said dogs will beretained in their positions by the Weight of the float 32 and rod 31, which latter is connected to 'dog 41 by means of the pin 46, the slotted fingers 44, and spring .43.

The liquid passing y,thru the nozzle' discharges downwardly ,and outwardly thru the openings 24 and then, when the level of the liquid discharged into the tank reaches the float 32 and moves the same upward, the pin and slot connections between-rod 31 and fingers 44 will Hex the Aupper portion of spring 43 outward, thereby disengaging dog 41 from the fiange on collar 38 and the tension of spring 40 will move said collar upand the connections 36 and 37 between said collar and the spring l 35 will flex the latter outwardly so as to swing dog 34 on its axis and release collar 29, which will move upward under the influence of the relatively heavy spring 28.
As collar 29 is thus moved upward, it will i `elevate the bifurcated forward end of lever 47, thereby swinging the same on its fulcrum and the rear end of said lever will move downward and bear against-the inclined face 52 of' hook '53, thereby disengaging 'the latter from the hook 55 and thesprng beneath valve 15 Will'move the latter onto its or pin 56 downward, thus engaging and moving downward the rear en'd of arm 47 and which action releases hook 53 from the hook 55 and this will permit the valve`f15 to close, as just describe j My improved filling spout, and particularly the type illustrated, is designed for use in filling the gasoline tanks of automobiles, although said spout may be advantageously employed for filling-any kind of tank or receptacle.v
Thus, it will be seen that I have provided a. filling spout that is relatively simple in construction and which will act positively and automatically to cut ofl" the flow ot' liquid thru the spout when the level of the liquid in the'receivingtank reaches a predetermined point, thus eliminating possibility of the receiving tank from overfiowing, and which action, where gasoline is being dispensed, causes danger of fire.
It will beundcrstood that minor changes in the size,.rform and construction ot' the variousparts of my improved filling spout may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth 'in the appended claims.
I claim -as my invention:
1. liquid thru said spout, ahandle ulcrumed on the body of the spout and unseating said valve, a latch for retaining said handle in valve unseating position, an arm fulcrumed on the body of the spoutand positioned he-` low said handle, the rear end ot which arm is adapted to engage said latch, a spring pressed 'member arranged for operation in the upper portion of the depending end of the spout, which member bears against the under-side ot the forward end of said arm, means fornretaining said spring-held member in set position, afloat arranged for operation in the lower portion of said depending member for releasing said retaining means, manually operable means for actuating said arm independent of the float actuated means, and a manually operable plunger for moving said fulcrumed arm intoset position.
