CLARENCE LLIOTT HEDRICK, F NEWTON, KANSAS.
roUL'rnY FEEDER Application filed April' 15, 1927. Serial No. 184,124.`
My invention relates to poultry feeders,'
and especially to those wherein a guard is employed to prevent fowls from scattering the food, and it consists in the combinations,
constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a feed trough embodying a guard which may be readily removed therefrom, to facilitate cleaning of the trough.
A further object is to provide a guard which Will readily accommodate itself within the interior of a feed hopper, and also prevent displacement thereof by the fowls. l
A further object is to provide a guard which will be readily interchangeable with hopper-s of varied interior dimensions.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the inventionwill be particularly. pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is atop plan View of my troughand guard,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is an end elevation, and
yFigure 4 is a cross section on the line d-d of Figure 2.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a rectangular trough 1, having straight side walls 2, bottom 3 and end walls 4i. 'lhc bot tom 3 and end Walls l are cut so as to provide flanges 5 which are bent in such manner as to lie inthe same plane as the end walls lj The anges may be secured to the end walls in any approved manner, as by soldering. i
'lo facilitate handling of the hopper the end walls d are curved outwardly to a rolled edge 6, providing hand-holds, as may be clearly seen in Figure 2.
rlFhe side walls 2'are curved inwardly to form a rolled edge 7, this edge being of such size as toA extend Well Within the interior of the trough..
Il. guard, generally indicated by the nu meral 8, is providcd,'this guardl being of a length to be set within the trough 1, and extends from one Yend wall to the opposite end wall. v
lllhe guard 8 is formed by bending a single strand of wire tov provide a series of coils 9, these coils .beingY of approximately equal Nr OFFICE.
diameter and of a size to frictionally enfgage o the Inv order that the coils 9 may be rod 10, intermediate its length, thus giving V a solid support to the guard upon the base of the trough.
It should be noted that alternate coils of the guard are not attached to the rod 16, but are curved inwardly toward the axis of the coils, as at 13, forming a helix 14. The Wire from which the guardf is constructed is of a resilient character, tending to spring outwardly into frictional contact With the edges, 7 of the trough, and thisl tendency is still further added 1n those coils wherein the helix 14 is involved.
It will be apparent that I have provided a guard construction which may be readily applied to troughs of various Widths, and at the same time insurin r absolute retention ofthe guard within a trough, due to the resilient frictionalA contact of the coils of the guard with the edges of the trough.
It should be noted that by providing inwardly projecting edges on the side Walls of the trough 1 at such height as to contact with the coils of an interposed guard at a point well above the horizontal axis of the coils, a substantial binding action is effected at the point of contact.
1. An improved guard for poultry feeders of the character described comprising a resilient wire coiled in a helix, a longitudinal support rod secured tothe periphery of certain coils of said guard, certain other coils heilig unattached, and means upon the interior of the unattached coils to permit expansion and contraction of said last named coils.
2. An improved guard for poultry feeders of the character described comprising a resilient wire coiled in a helix, a longitudinal support -rod secured to the `perimeter of certain coils of said guard, certain other coils being unattached and bowed inwardly proper spaced relation with one whereby to permit diametrical enlargement ing in rictional contact with said rolled and contraction of the last named coils. edge, and brace rods secured to said helices 3. In a poultry feeder, a trough having at a point below the horizontal axis of said 10 side walls extending upwardly and projected helices, whereby said helices will be lree to 5 inwardly to provide a rolled edge, a resilexpand and contract at their upper portions.
ient guard within said trough, said guard comprising a wirecoiled in a helix and be- CLARENCE ELLIOTT HEURICK.
