WATER-CIRCULATING-APPARATUS ATTACHMENT FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION MOTORS AND THE LIKE.
Application. filed May 12, 1925. Serial No. 29,712.
My invention relates to a water circulating apparatus attachment for internal combustion motors and the like, and the ob ects of my invention are:
First, to provide an apparatus which may be readily attached in connection with an 1nternal combustion motor and radiator for providing forced circulation of water through the motor and radiator; second, to provide an apparatus of this class which may be readily attached to the motor now in use without changing the parts; third, to provide a novel Water circulating pump of this class; fourth, to provide a novel means for attaching a circulating pump to a motor; fifth, to provide a novel pulley-wheel for circulating pumps of this class; sixth, to provide a water circulating pump for motors in which the parts are made with a minimum of machine work; seventh, to provide a pump of this class in which the different parts connect and correlate with each other forming a close fit so that the parts will not rattle or get loose; eighth, to provide an apparatus and pump of this class which are very easy to assemble and ninth, to provide an apparatus of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, eflicient in its action and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order. I
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference bemg'had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form' a part of this application, in which:

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view through 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the supporting brace for supporting the circulating pump in connection with the gear casing of the motor. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the pump rotor casing. Fig. 6 1s a side elevational view of one side thereof. Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of the opposite side thereof. Fig. 8 is a side elevational view of the rotor casing cover plate. Fig. 9 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 10 is a front elevational view of the main supporting casing. Fig. 11 is a side elevational view of one member of the pulley, Fig. 12 is a similar view of the other member of the pulley. Fig. 13 is a side elevational view of the pump rotor member and Fig. 14, a side view at a right angle thereto.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The casing member 1, end member 2, casing member 3, pump rotor casing 4, rotor 5, rotor casing cover 6, shaft 7, bushing 8, hose connecting member 9, pulley member 10, pulley member 11 and supporting brace 12, constitute the principal parts and portions of my apparatus.
The casing member 1 is preferably a sheet metal member provided with reinforcing grooves 15 and 1 therein. Mounted in the one end thereof is the end member 2 which is preferably a casting which is spot welded in position in the end forming a liquid tight fit. It is provided with an inwardly extending flange 2 which fits snugly into the end of said casing 1 and with an outwardly extending flange 2 which extends over the edge. It is provided with an angularly extended portion 2 which is adapted to fit into the hose coupling which is the conventional hose coupling in connection with the water jacket of the motor, as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Mounted in the opposite end of this casing l is the pump rotor casing 1. It will be noted that this rotor casing 4 is provided with an eccentrically positioned hole 4" and with an extended flange 4" on one side thereof, which extended flange is provided on its outer edge with a plurality of different sized lug members 4 which are adapted to receive the different sized perforations 6" of the cover member 7 and said cover member is secured by riveting these lug members 4 over the cover member 6. Mounted in the casing inside of the flange 4 is a rotor member 5 which consists of a plurality of outwardly extending curved members 5, shown best in Figs. 13 and 14 of the drawings, secured on the one side of the disc 5 and to the hub portion 5". This hub portion is internally threaded, adapted to receive the threaded end of the shaft 7 which shaft is provided with a spiral notch 7 s i-facc forming a tight fit in the ca a 1 Mounted in the end of this casing is another casing 3 which provided with extended portion 3 which rests against the flange of the casing member 4, this member 4i is spot welded in the end of the casing l forming a liquid tightjoint. This casing 3 is also provided with a flange 3? which is adapted to rest againstthe end of the casi jig member 1. t is provided on one side with bevelled portion 3" provided with an orifire 3 therein. It is provided centrally in its outer side with an inwardly extending portion 3 in which is rigidly secured a bushing 8 which forms a journal for the shaft 7 and it is externally threaded on its extended end adapted for a stufiing nut 8? for forming a tight joint between the shaft and bushing 8. Secured against the outer side of the bevelled portion 3 is the hose connecting member 9, by means of bolts 9 screwed into the easing member 3 at opposite sides with a gasket positioned between for providing a tight joint. To the extended end of this member 9 is connected the hose coupling which connects with the lower side of the radiator.
Mounted on the extended end of the shaft 7 is a pulley consisting of two members 10 and 11 and so positioned that it is adapted to engage the conventional belt for operating the fan of the motor, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The pulley member 10 is provided with a flange 1O on one side and with spoke members 10 extending inwardly to a hub portion 10. This hub portion is provided with extended lug portions 10 which are provided. with holes 10. These spokes are also provided near their outer ends with holes 1O which are adapted to receive bolts 10 The member 11 is also provided with a flange 11 on one side and with inwardly extending lugs 1]. which are provided withholes 11 adapted to receive said bolts 10 thus providing means for clamping the members 10 and 11 togather and the member 10 is secured on the shaft by means of a clamp member 10 provided with holes conforming with the holes 10 in which bolts are mounted for clamping the pulley to the shaft.
In order to rigidly secure the pump to the motor there is provided a supporting brace 12 shaped, as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawings, provided with an extended portion 12 in alignment with the main portion which is provided with a hole 12" which is adapted to receive one of the conventional bolts in the gear casing of the motor and it is provided with laterally extending tapered lugs 12" which are adapted to engage the side of thegear casing so that when fixed thereon the brace is rigidly secured to the gear casing and its opposite end is provided with a hole adapted to fit over the bushing 8 between the and nut 8 as shown best in 2 of'the drawings, thus providing a rigid means for bracing and supporting the pump relatively to the motor.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I no not wish to be li nied to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a water circulating apparatus attach ment for internal combustion motors and the like, a casing, a head secured in one end of said casing provided with an extended portion adapted for a hose connection, a hollow casing secured in the opposite end of said casing provided with an inwardly extending eccentric flange portion, a rotor revolubly mounted therein, a shaft secured to said rotor and extending outwardly through said hollow casing and a hose connection member secured to one side of said hollow casing.
2. In a water circulating apparatus attach ment for internal combustion motors and the like, a casing, a head secured in one end of said casing provided with an extended portion adapted for a hose connection, a hollow casing secured in the opposite end of said casing provided with an inwardly extending eccentric flange portion, a rotor rovolubly mounted therein, a shaft secured to said rotor and extending outwardly through said hollow casing, a hose connecting member secured to one side of said hollow casing, and a stufiing box around said shaft in said hollow casing. i
3. In awater circulating apparatus attach ment for internal combustion motors and the like, a casing, a head secured in one end of said casing provided with an extended portion adapted for a hose connection, a hollow casing secured in the opposite end of said casing provided with an inwardly extending eccentric flange portion, a rotor revolubly mounted therein, a shaft s.c cured to said motor and extending outwardly through said hollow casing, a hose connecting member secured to one side of said hollow casing and a pulley clamped on the extended end of said shaft.
4. In a water circulating apparatus attachment for internal combustion motors and the like, a casing provided'with an inlet at ill) one end and an outlet at its opposite end, a spiral casing eccentrically mounted therein, provided with an opening in one side, a rotor provided with curved blades revolubly mounted in said casing and a shaft secured to said rotor and extending outwardly through one end of said casing.
5. In a water circulating apparatus attachment for internal combustion motors and the like, a casing provided with an inlet at one end and an outlet at its opposite end, a spiral casing mounted therein, provided with an opening in one side, a rotor provided with curved blades revolubly mounted in said casing and a shaft secured to said rotor and extending outwardly through one end of said casing.
(3. In a water circulating apparatus attachment for internal combustion motors and the like, a casing provided with an inlet at one end and an outlet at its opposite end, a spiral casing eccentrically mounted therein, provided with an opening in one side, a rotor provided with curved blades rcvolubly mounted in said casing, a shaft secured to said rotor and extending outwardly through one end of said casing and an extended bushing rigidly secured in the one end of said casing forming an extended journal for said shaft.
7. In a water circulating apparatus attachment for internal combustion motors and the like, a casing provided with an inlet at one end and an outlet at its opposite end, a spiral casing eccentrically mounted therein, provided with an opening in one side, a rotor provided with curved blades revolubly mounted in said casing, a shaft secured to said rotor and extending outwardly through one end of said casing, an extended bushing rigidly secured in the one end of said casing forming an extended journal for said shaft and a stuffing nut mounted on the extended end of said bushing around said shaft.
