This invention relates to compressormechanism.
It has forits object to provide an improved compressor mechanism. A further object is to provide an improved portable compressor mechanism particularly adapted for mines. The several elements which go to make up the portable compressor are so arranged that the maximum height of the device will be 8X- tremely low and it is preferable that the height will not exceed the maximum height of one of the elements which is already of minimum height. Such an element herein specifically comprises the electric driving motor for the compressor, but it will be clear.

It is especially desirable that an extremely low compressor outfit be provided, for it will be understood that this outfit must operate at times in coal seams which are extremely low. It is accordingly the further object of my invention to provide an improved arrangement of parts by which an extren'iely low and compact outfit is obtained. It i. also a further object to provide in a portable mine compressor an improved compressor having an improved arrangement with respect to the truck frame upon which the several elements are arranged. Herein the compressor is of the two cylinder opposed. type disposed transversely of the truck-frame and tracks upon which the truck is mounted, thus reducing vibration of the truck to a minin'ium and permitting the more successful use of a transverse reciprocatory type of compressor. However, my improved arrangement also permits the more successful use of an ordinary type of single cylinder compressor, if arranged to have the piston thereof reciprocate in a transverse direction. The inherent unbalance of this type of compressor would tend to cause transverse movement of the truck, but the rails would tend to hold the same against any appreciable amount of movement, therebycutting down vibration. While my improved arrangement is well adapted tothis single cylinder type of compressor, yet by employing an opposed type of compressor, still .furth'e'r advantages are obtainable. For instance, in some cases, the tracks may be old and improperly spiked in which case the single cylinder compressor would only make matters worse, for there would be a tendency to shove-the rails laterally or possibly to spread the same if the compressor outfit should remain in a single'position any length of time. It will thus be seen that it is highly desirable to reduce the maximum amount of transverse vibration in thesecases, but it is also highly desirable to use a transversely disposed compressor in order to obtain the compact arrangement.
This dual result, among others, is obtained by the use of an. opposed compressor of the general type herein shown. My improved arrangement also permits the ready adaptation of the usual auxiliary elements such as the cooling water tank for the compressor, the electric controller box for the compressor motor, and also the positioning of the air receiver. To further accomplish the compact arrangement it has been found desirable to suspend certain ofthe elements so as to extend below the level of the truck frame and in some instances to mount the frame upon dropped axles, thus rendering the device extremely low and compact.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration oneform which my invent-ion may assume in practice.

In the illustrative embodiment of my invention I have shown a truck frame 1 hav. ing usual side flanges 2, end flanges 3, and a bottom portion 5 upon which the several elements of the compressor may be mounted. lVhile most of the elements of the compressor outfit may be supported at the level of the frame, it will be understood that the bottom 5 may have cut out portions in order to allow certain of the elements to project through said openings to below the level of the frame,
thereby obtaining a rather low construction.
The term prevailing level of the frame which is used in the claims is meant to specify the level at which most of the elements of the. compressor outfit are carried. It will be noted that the receiver is disposed transversely of the truck frame and set below the upper edge of the flanges thereof as is also the motor and compressor. 7 What I claim as new'and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
'1. Ina portable compressor mechanism a portable base frame, a horizontal motor 1 mountedthereon and disposed inthe'longitudinal' center thereof, a horizontal compressor driven'by said motor, said compressor having horizontal cylinders extending transversely at each side of the longitudmalcenter of said frame, and a transversely disposed tank for receiving the fluid discharged from upper portion of said frame and within said recessed portion, the combined height of said base frame and said motor determining the height of the mechanism.
3. In a portable compressor mechanism, a portable base frame having wheeled axles and a platform, said axles and platform being in substantially the same horizontal plane, a horizontal motor mounted on said platform and having a. portion thereof depending be low the same, a horizontal compressor driven by said motor, and a horizontally disposed tank for receiving the fluid discharged from said compressor.
4. In a portable compressor mechanism, a portable'base frame having wheeled axles and a platform, said axles and platform being in substantially the same horizontal plane, a horizontal motor mounted on said platform and having a portion thereof extending through said platform to a point below a horizontal plane including the axes of said wheels, a horizontal compressor driven by said motor, and a horizontally disposed tank for receiving the fluid discharged from said compressor, the combined height of said base frame and motordetermining the height of the mechanism.
5. In a portable compressor mechanism, a base frame comprising supporting Wheels movable over a trackway, said frame providing a supporting surface substantially at the level of the axes of said supporting wheels, a compressor thereon, and a driving motor for said compressor supported by said frame so that the motor base is substantially as low as the axes of the wheels of said frame, said compressor being mounted on said supporting surface and extending only within the vertical limits of the motor.
6. In a portable compressor mechanism, a base frame comprising supporting wheels movable over a trackway, said frame providing a supporting surface substantially at the level of the axes of said supporting wheels, a compressor element thereon, and a driving motor element therefor, said frame being formed with an opening through which a portion of the taller of said elements projects, the other of said elements being mounted on said supporting surface so that the same is disposed within the vertical limits of that one of said elements which extends through said frame.
7. In a portable compressor mechanism, a
portable base frame, a horizontal motor mounted thereon and disposed 1n the longitudinal center thereof, a horizontal compressor driven by said motor, said compressor having horizontal cylinders extending transversely at each side of the longitudinal center of said frame, and a transversely disposed tank for receiving the fluid discharged from said compressor.

In a portable compressor mechanism, a portable base frame having a recessed portion, a horizontal motor thereon, a horizontal-cylindered compressor driven by said motor, and a horizontally disposed tank for receiving the fluid discharged from said compressor, said motor, compressor, and tank being disposed below the upper portion of said frame and within'said recessed portion.
