ELASTIC WOVEN FABRIC.
Application filed May 19,
The invention consists in an elastic woven fabric of a construction rendering it particularly desirable and advantageous for embodiment in corsets and other like womens wear.
a The said construction renders the web porous so as to provide for effective ventilation, and while attaining lightness, softness, and sup pleness is of a character tending to conserve durability.
Illustrative embodiments of the principles of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 and 2 respectively are views on the order of diagrams representing two variations of the fabric-construction, these latter being shown on enlarged scale with the component warp and weft-elements spread apart widely.
In each view the fabric-organization is composed of covered elastic strands 1, 1, &c., employed as warp-elements; picks 2, 21, &c., of non-elastic weft or filling; face leno-warps 3, 31, &c.; and back leno- warps 4, 41, &c. In Figs. 2, 5, 5, &c., are non-elastic warp-threads which intervene between adjacent elastic 25 stands 1, 1.
The elastic strands 1, 1, extend in substantially straight lines between the upper and the lower weft-planes.
With each elastic strand 1, or it might be a group of elastic strands side by side, is associated a face leno-warp, as 3, and this face leno-warp first, at one side of such strand or group of strands, passes under a back-pick, as 2. Then the said face leno-warp crosses diagonally over the intersection of the succeeding face-pick, 21, with the said elastic strand or group of strands, to the opposite side thereof, where it passes under the succeeding back-pick, as 22. Next, the face leno-warp crosses diagonally in the reverse direction over the intersection of the following facepick, as 23, with the elastic strand or group of strands, to the first side of the elastic 1928. Serial No. 279,011.
strand or group of elastic strands, at which side in the next repeat of the weave it passes under the succeeding back-pick, 2, and so on.
It will be perceived that the face lenowarps 3, 31, &c., in virtue of passing under the back-picks of weft or filling, first at one side of an elastic strand and then at the other, and of crossing diagonally in front of the intersections of the face-picks of weft or filling, bind the three planes of fabric-elements together into a woven fabric.
In the drawings the couples comprising, each, an elastic strand 1 and a face leno-warp associated therewith are disposed in groups composed, respectively, of two of the said couples, for the production of a rib or wale of desired width- The features referred to thus far produce an elastic woven fabric characterized by longitudinal face-ribs or wales separated by intervening bands of openwork. Such faceribs or wales are constituted of the elastic strands and their coverings composed of the face leno-Warps 3 and those portions of the face-picks which lie upon the elastic strands. The openwork bands comprise, respectively, the interval between one rib or wale and the next and the portions of the picks of weft or filling which cross such interval. In these bands the crossing-portions of the back-picks are entirely below the crossing-portions of the face-picks. Because of such fact, and because the crossing-portion of one face-pick is separated somewhat widely from the crossing-portions of the preceding and succeeding face-picks, the band shows spaces or openings between such crossing-portions.
The back leno-warps 1 have for one function the duty of fixing the elastic strands and leno face-warps against displacement laterally upon the picks of weft or filling. They have the additional function of forming a more complete covering for the elastic strands at the back of the web or fabric. Each back leno-warp passes at one side of a rib or wale over a back-pick, as 2; then diagonally across at the back of the elastic strands of a rib or wale to the opposite side of the rib or Wale, where it passes over the next succeeding backpick, as 22; then returning diagonally in the reverse direction and passing over back-pick, as 2 of the next repeat, and so on. Each time the back lcno-warp 4 passes over a back-pick ltl it engages with the latter at the farther side of the portion of an adjoining face len0-warp vvhich passes under the same pick.
lln practice the number of elastic strands comprised in a rib or wale may vary. Thus, a rib or wale may comprise either two elastic strands, as in the drawings, or a single elastic strand, or more than two.
llt will be observed that the diagonal crossings of the face and back leno-Warps of the respective couples of the group comprised in a rib or wale incline in the opposite direction relative to the adjacent diagonal crossings of the neighboring group. Hence, the diagonal crossings ot the lone-warps of adjoining groups alternately converge and diverge.
in Fig. 2 warp- threads 5, 5, &c., are shown between the two elastic strands of a rib. They are interwoven with the back- picks 2, 22, etc. They assist in preventing lateral displacement of the warp-elements of the ribs.
Various modifications in fabric-construction are possible to be made without involving departure from the principles of the invention.
W hat is claimed as the invention is An elastic woven :tabric comprising elastic warp-strands, as l, 1, &c., back-picks of weft or filling, as 2, 22, 80s., face-picks of filling, as 21, 23, &c., face leno-Warps, as 3, 31, 850., respectively engaging under backpicks at opposite sides alternately of an elasmenses tic strand and between one back-pick and the next crossing diagonally over 'a face-pick and the elastic strand, and back leno-warps respectively engaging over the back-picks at opposite sides, alternately, of one or more couples respectively comprising an elastic strand and a face leno warp.
2. An elastic woven fabric comprising elastic warpstrands, face-picks of weft or filling at the face-side of such elastic warpstrands, back-picks at the other side thereof, face leno-warps, as 3, 31, 620., respectively engaging under back-picks at opposite sides alternately of an elastic strand and between one back-pick and the next crossing diagonally over a face-pick and the elastic strand, back leno-warps respectively engaging over the back-picks at opposite sides, alternately, of a group of couples comprising respectively an elastic strand with a leno face-warp, and warp-threads interwoven with the back-picks between the elastic strands of a group. 1
3. An elastic woven fabric comprising, essentially, elastic warp-elements, face-picks of weft or filling, back-picks of warp or filling, face leno-warps engaging under the backpicks and crossing diagonally over the intersections of face-picks and elastic warp-elements, and back leno-warps engaging over the back-picks at opposite sides respectively of the elastic Warp-elements.
