IMPROVEMENT IN OATMEAL-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,745, dated December 7, 1875; application led September 11,1875.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KRUsE, of the city of Akron, Summit county, Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Oatmeal-Machines,
-of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of oatmeal-machines wherein a hopper having a perforated metallic bottom slides upon a series of horizontal knives, so arranged that the kernels of grain falling endwise through the `bottom of the hopper shall be sheared ofi' by the knives as the hopper slides across them.
The object of my invention is to render the particles of meal uhiform in size, and insure the cutting of each kernel of grain. I accomplish this by using single-edged knives, arranged so closely together that kernels of oats cannot fall vertically between them, and beveling the upper side of these knives toward the back, so that the blade shall form a stop, against which the ends of the kernels of oats falling through the perforated bottom of the hopper shall strike and be arrested until cut off by the following knife, when the severed pieces fall over the bae'k edge of the knife into a proper receptacle below.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 2 is a perspective view of an oatmeal-machine embodying my invention; and Fig. l, a crosssection of a portion of the perforated plate C and knives D, to show the arrangement an construction thereof.
In Fig. 2, B' is the hopper, with the perforated bottom C, moved by the pitlnan AF, crank E, and pulley G, and sliding in the frame A on the knives D D, Sto. These knives are beveled toward the back, as shown in Fig. l, so that a space is left between them and the plate C, which regulates the size of the particles of grain out off, as shown at C, Fig. 1. These knives may be placed in an independent sliding frame, if desired, so as to move in an opposite direction to the plate O. By fastening these knives by pivots o r journals at the front edge the back could be raised and lowered, so as to regulate the size of the particles of meal at will.
I claim as my invention- In an oatmeal-machine, the beveled knives D D, applied, as set forth, in relation to plate (l, serving both to cut the grain and as a gage to regulate the size of the particles of meal, substantially as described.
