The gear 47 is driven by a `suitable source of power through a Ygear 52, the vdriving power being` transmitted to the roll 43 through vthe'. gear 50 and to the rollY 44 through gears 48 and 5l thus rolls 43 and 44 in opposite directions as indicated by the arrows, The gears 47 and 48 further respectivelyy engage twogea'rs 53 and 54 on the shafts 35y and 36, thus turning the sets of rollers '33 and 34 in opposite directions as indicated by the arrows,
Referring now to the means for withdrawing thev papers from the cylinder D- and retaining these papers in order until an edition has been completed, two shafts 59 and 6() are suitably journaled in the'sideframes 'l in positions parallelto thecylinder shafts 2 and 3. `The shaft 60 isdriven from the shaft 3 through suitable gears 6l and 62, the rear ratio being' so chosen that the shaft 60 isdriven at twice the angular velocity of the The shaft' 59 speed as the shaft 6() through'two shafts 63 and 64, which are respectively geared to the opposite ends of the shafts 59and 60 through the bevel `gears and 66, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3.

Fixed respectively to 'the shafts 63 and yare two blades or arms 67 .and 68. 64 rotate in opposite di-r as shown in Fig. 2. The rot-ation off the vshafts 63 and 64 is so timed with respecty to the rotation of the drum D that the ends of the arms 67 and V68 vmove inwardly and downwardly adjacent'the'ends of each push'.

Two pairs cfjretaining lingers/ and 86 are provided toxhold the papers in position g stackedor nested. Each of these fingers normally extendsy over one upper Vcorner of the trough T in parallel and .spaced relation to the sets of `guide strips 2O and 2l and suitable mechanism is provided for periodically and simultaneously withdrawing all of these fingers normal positions to' permit a stack ofpaper sheets todrop into the trough T.` The pairs of fingers 85 and 86 are respectively mounted on pairs of brackets'69 and 70. The brackets 69'are slidably mounted on the shaft 60 and and are pressed togetherv a parallel shaft 7l, by a pair ofcoiled spring'? 2 on the shaft 71 as shown in Fig'. 3. Similarly, the brackets '70 are slidably mounted on the shaft 59 and a parallel shaft 73, and are pressed together by a pair of coiled springs 74 surrounding the shaft? The ad'acent'faces of the pairs of brackets 69 and 70 are -respectively provided with pairs ofalign'edyhoriz'ontally journaled rollers, 7 5 and 76. Two double-v faced earns andTS are respectively fixed aftsjO and 59,
being;- arranged torespectively engage the pairs of rollers 7 5 and 76, as v clearly shown in Figs. l and V'The surfaces of the camsl77 and 78 aredesigned to simultaneously sep'- arate the pairs'of brackets 69 and 70 rrespectivelyduring a certain portion of yeach rotation of these cams.` means is so timed that the pairs of brackets 69 and V70 are separated and the pairs of fingers 85 and 86 thus withdrawn from the trough T at the points in the operation of the mechanism at which the Vpush plates 3 are extended from the cylinder D.
The cam 32 which operates the folding" trough linkage is fixed to Va suitable shaft 79 which is driven thro-ugh a .gear train E50-8l from the shaftv 60 (see Fig'. 1). As explained above, twice the angul ar i velocity and 8l between the shaft 60 `and the cam shaft 79 are preferably arranged to ldrive the cani. shaft at one-halfy `the angular velocity of the cylinder shaft 3,
once during each revolution thereof, or in n n The gear, train 8014-81 is arranged'in such a manner' fixed relation desired.-r
ico
the shaft 60 rotates at of the vcylinder that the cani 32 operates the linkage and opens the trough T at a point in the rotation of the cylinder D when neither of the push plates 8 are in their radially extended positions. Thus, the trough T is not opened while papers are being,r pushed from the surface of the cylinder D.
The operation ot the machine embodyingthe present invention will now be desc il Jed. A plurality of aligned continuous sheets oi printed paper 82 are continuously delivered to the .machine between cylinders C and D. The number of sheets thus delivered is usually determined by the capacity of the cutting` blades and the maximum number of sheets so delivered represents either he maX- imum number that can be properly cut in a single operation, or the maximum number that can be simultaneously printed. These paper sheets 82 may be folded or may comprise a single un folded stack, and the number of sheets may be varied in accordance with the printing' mechanism enualoyed or the size of the edition required. W hen the paper folding' machine of the present invention is applied to the mechanism for printing` newspapers, the continuous sheets 82 preferably comprise the successive pages of a portion or the entire edition of the newspaper, these papers being* printed in doublel page arrangement` so that when severed from each other, stacked together in the open condition and then folded along` the center line between the panes, they form a properly arrancjed completed edition of the desired size.
The descendingedge of the continuous paper sheets 82 enters the space between the cylinders C and D and is impaled upon the pins 7 carried by the cylinder D. These pins carry the sheets around on the cylindrical surface of the cylinder D and when the cylinders have turned lthrough approximately one-quarter of a revolution, the tongue 14. on the push plate 8 ot the cylinder D enters the corresponding` l,groove l5 in the cutting cylinder C, thereby forming a crease along the center line between the double pages of the papers 82. The rotation of the cylinders continues, and when the cylinder D has completed one-hall: ot a revoiution, the cutting blade or knife 5 on the cylinder C presses against the papers 82 and cuts oilVl a stack ot double page sheets 83.
At this point in they operation of the niachine, the pins at the point llV are withdrawn within the cylinder D and thus retracted 'from jthe edge oi2 the stackot papers, and the lowerinost push platel 8 is depressed or extended to the position shown in F l, thus carrying the severed stack of papers 83 away from the surface of the cylinder D and into the top of the trough T. As the stack of papers 83 is thus spaced from the cylinder D, the arms 67 and 68 enter the opposite ends of the stack 83, engaging the upper surface thereoiB at the. crease 84 and pressing the stack downwardly into the trough T to the position shown at 87 inV Fig. l. J ust as the stack 83 is thus pushed away from the cylinder D, the cams 77 and 78 separate ythe pairs ot brackets 69 and 70, thus withdrawing the ngers and 86 from the trough T to the positions shown in full lines in Dig'.
Alfter the stack 83 has been pushedto the bottoni of 'the trough T by the arms 67 and 68, the cams 77' and 78 release' the brackets G9 and 70. The springs 72 and We then press the brackets 69 and l0 together, thus carrying;n the retaining;` lingers 85 and 86 over the edges ot the stack to the positions shown in dotted lines in 3. The retaining'lingers 85 and 86 are thus withdrawn as each stack 83 ot into the trough T, and are again placed over the stack att-er the papers are fully seated in the trough. The lingers 85 and 8G hold the papers in av tf-shape position in the trough T, preventing'. thedrifting of the upper sheets across the trough due to air currents, the resiliency or" the paper, or other causes. ln this manneigthe disarrangjeinent or crumpling er tearing,` ot' papers in one stack by those ot the next successive stack is prevented. The above described operation ci" lthe cutting;` and carryine' cylinders C and D continues until a su'llicientnumber of stacks of paper, 83 have been nested within the trough T to complete required size. In the eman edition ol the bodiment of the invention disclosed in the drawings, it is assumed that the` edition being prepared comprises four stacks 83 of double page sheets. VThus the cam 32 is arranged to open the trough T once during,` each two complete revolutions of .the cylinder D. Tn each, revolution of the cylinder, twostacks oit sheets 83 are deposited in the trough T in the manner described above, and immediately after four such stacks have been so arranged, the cam 32 moves the4 ,lever 30, turning the shaft 24 in a `clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. l, `and open`V ing the lower end of the trough T as described above. Thisaction el' the cam 32 also moves the set oli' rollers 34 away from the cooperating rollers 33, and the conipleted edition of the paper drops between these rollers. is advanced tllerel y to theV intor-eng'agii rolls i3 and lll. and is'tlicrcby rapidly cau ed out ot the lower end ot the trough T, 'As the paper passes between the rolls i3 and eli, the roll all moves to the lett, as shown in Fig. l, the spring e6 being; compressed and the paper being thereby lirnily gripped and positively advanced. Just after the upper paper has passed through the end of the trough T, the cam the lever 30, and the spring 33, acting papers is pushed edge of the open lower 32. releasesy shaft GO, that is,
pushed Yfrom' the cylinder mechanism can be einpioye'clthrough the linkage,I closes vthe trough The operation of the cylinders C andD is not interrupted While the-paper yis :being discharged from thetrough T, and as soon as the trough has closed, the first stack 83 ofv double page sheets comprising another paper, is dropped into' the trough troni-the cylinder D. The open positions of the guide strips 20 and 2l of the trough yT, andof the rollers '84, as Well as the positions assumed hyr .the
elements of the' linkage -connected to these parts, have heen indicated hyV dotted lines/in Fig. l. n
. Vihen it is desired toincrease or decrease 'the site ol' the editiony O1"` the sections there; oi' which are to he folded together, the" gea-r 'ratio' between lthe shafts 60 and 79 lis altered.
Thus if every stack 83 of double page sheets is to he separately folded-and delivered, thek cai/n 32 is driven at the same' speed as' the at twice the angular ve'locL ity of the' cylinder D. `When driven' in this manncr,.the trough To'lds and delivers each stack 83 ci papers' as soon as such stack is D intctlie trough T. lt is readily apparent that the gear ratio h'etvve'en 'the shafts 60' and 27.9' inay be vaiv :ed to adapt the' trou-ghrnechanisnl for the' nial'r'i ing up ot editions composed of any 7de; sired nuin'h'e'r of stac'ls 83.-? l v v ltsliould` he .understood that the size' andv 'shape of the cani' 32 may suitably varied ii necessary when' the` gearr ratio between shaft 6o andthe cam sha-1579' isf' changed.
