IMPROVEMENT IN CURRV-COMBS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,733, dated December 7, 1875; application filed October 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HOTGH- KISS, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Curry- Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figurel of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of my currycomb. Fig. 2 is a side view of the handlepieces, and Fig.3 a perspective view of one of the filling-pieces. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of my curry-comb.

The object of my invention is to improve close-back curry-combs, which are made of trough-shaped comb-bars, which are secured together by riveting them to cross-bars, so as to present what is termed in the trade ribbedback curry-combs.

Prior to my invention close-back currycombs have been made of trough-shaped bars, one flange of which was toothed, and the other toothless, the latter serving to strengthen a contiguous com b-flange.

I have found that the strengthening-flanges are useless, and I make a close-back currycomb which is lighter, and much cheaper, than the combs above referred to, andwhich has but a single thickness of metal throughout.

Another object of my invention is to improve the grasping'handle of a curry-comb by constructing the same of two parts, one part serving as a brace or tie-bar, and the other part serving as a means by which to grasp the curry-comb, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the annexed drawings, A A A designate trough-shaped comb-bars, having teeth formed on the edges of both flanges. These comhbars are secured at suitable distances apart to cross-bars B B C, rivets being used for this purpose. The spaces between the backs of the comb-bars are filled by thin plates D, which are riveted to the cross-bars B B C, and which may have their edges rounded, so as to correspond to the rounded corners of the comb-bars, and thus give a finished appearance to the back of the curry-comb.

The grasping-handle, which is represented. in the annexed drawings, is composed of two pieces, C G, one of which is first riveted to the backs of the comb-bars and filling-plates D, after which the other piece, which is grasped in the hand, is riveted to the outer comb-bar, and also to the piece C. Both of the pieces C G are bent, so as to form a tang for a wooden handle, J, and also a thumbrest, g.

I do not under this application claim a handle for a curry-comb having an inclined thumbrest, g, as this feature forms the subject of another application, marked case A, and bearin g even date with the filing of this.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. Filling-plates D, combined with combbars A, substantially as described.

2. The handle to the back of a curry-comb formed of two pieces, C G, of which the piece C extends across the back of the comb to brace and strengthen the same, and is bent upward to form the thumb-rest g, substantially as specified.
