PATENT OFFICE.

TOBACCO can.
Application filed April 28,
This invention relates broadly to containers and more particularly toa novel construction of the paper liner or sack inserted within that type of tobacco tin or container which is relatively deep and narrow, and which sack directly holds and seals the tobacco and maintains it out of contact with the metallic walls of thecontainer. r.
One of the objects of my invention resides in providing a novel type of liner or sack for the above purpose which sack or liner is con structed and arranged so that when the supply of tobacco or the like within the container becomes so low that it is difficult or impossible to reach with the fingers into the relatively narrow and deep container the liner or paper sack may be lifted partly out and held fast in such position, after which the projecting portion of the liner may be torn off flush with the mouth of the container so that the liner will be maintained in elevated position, in which position the contained tobacco may be easily grasped by the fingers.
These and other objects of my invention will be apparent from a perusal of the following specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the paper liner-or tobacco-containingsack partly pulled out of the can.
Figure 2 is a similar view shownig the tab or tongue folded over the edge of the con tainer wall and adhered to the outer side thereofi Figure 3 is a sectional view of the usual type 0f tobacco tin or container, showing that a small amount of tobacco in the narrow and deep tin cannot grasped by the fingers; and i j Figure 4 is a similar View of my improved manner of holding the raised liner in position by means of a portion of the liner held fast to the walls of the container.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved invention is concerned with a can, tin or container 2 for tobacco or other commodity. which container is of the usual deep and narrow type. In the use of such tobacco tins when the supply of tobacco 4 becomes low it is difficult and practically impossible to reach with the lingers any of the tobacco in the bottom of the container. These tins are provided with lining members 6 generally of waxed paper so as to maintain the tobacco or other commodity out of contact with the me 1927. Serial No. 187,155.
tallic walls of the container 2 and to maintain the tobacco in fresh condition by sealing it from the damp air when in the container. The construction or rather modification of this liner of. paper for holding the tobacco and especially its adaptation for use in connection with the relatively deep and narrow container 2 forms the feature of my invention. I contemplate forming this paper liner 6 or tobacco-containing sack so that when it is raised, by pulling it partly out of the 0011- tainer, it may be maintained or held in such pulled-out or raised position and the projecting portions of the liner may be torn off even or flush with the edge 8 of the container mouth. In the present illustrated form of my invention I provide the marginal over-folded portion 10 of the liner with a vertical row of perforations 12 which permitthe liner 6 to be torn along such row of perforations to provide a free tab or tongue 1.4- This tab or tongue 14; may then be folded over the outer face of the container wall 16 as shown clearly in Figures 2 and l of the drawings. The tab may be held in such position by any approved means. For instance, the top or closure 18 which may be hinged or otherwise, maybe used to clamp upon the folded-over edge of the tab 14 to hold it as desired when the can is closed, and the finger may hold it in such position when the cover is open or removed. However, I prefer to provide the outer face of the tab or tongue with adhesive and when the tab is to be folded over, this adhesive is moistened or otherwise adhered to the outer wall of the can so that the tongue is held just as shown in Figures 2 and 4.
Then the liner is thus raised, the projecting, useless portion of the liner, which is that portion projecting upwardly in Figure 1 of the drawings, may be torn off and this may be easily accomplished since the rough upper edge of the container forms a straight edge which permits the quick and clean severance of the projecting liner. It will be noted that when the projecting portion of the liner is severed the tab or tongue is not disturbed. he bottom 20 of the liner, when in raised position, forms an artificial bot-tom for the container 2 and holds the tobacco or other commodity relatively close to the mouth of the container where it may be easily grasped by the fingers. Obviously the entire length of the tab or tongue may be provided with adhesive so that the above operation may be repeated as 'the stock of tobacco within the sack or 'liner progressively diminishes. And to this end the row of perforations preferably extends tothe bottom of the liner. If desirable the liner may be formed with 'a horizontal row of perforations located approximately midway of its height so that when the stock becomes low by one half or approximately one half, the liner may be raised as hereinbefore explained and held in position andin this positionthe'horizontalrow of perforations will register with the top edge of the container and be easily torn off flush therewith. Tlhisfeature of my invention is notnocessary, however, since the top of the container forms a s traight edge to assist in tearing off the extra part of the liner which is not necessary after the liner is once elevated. It is also evident thatthe vertical row of perforations '12 may be omitted "for it will be seen that the papercan 'be torn along a vertical line whether scored'or perforated or not, but the perforations are desirable both because they facilitate tearing the paperand also suggest to the user the manner by which he may take advantage of the prmciple of the invention;
Manifestly other modifications of my construction are within the contemplation of my invention, and I-do not desire to limit myself to the exact manner of forming the tab from theoverfolded edge ofthe li'ner, since the perforations may be located directly in the side 22 o'ffthe liner. "In the present instance by locatingthe perforations 12 in the overfolded part of the liner the tobacco is prevented from sifting through the perforations since there is a double thickness of paper liner atsuch point, 1
My present invention'provides a most economical device for enablinga person to with draw tobacco or other loose commodity from a container of thedescribed type, since but a slight modification of the existing type of paper liner is necessary.
Having thus described my invention what I clainiasneyy and desire to secure by Letters Patent isf 1; 1-11 combination an open-mouthed tobacco tin of relatively deep and narrow proportions,- a piper liner adapted to enclose the tobacco within the tin, said liner having a portion scored along a vertical line'to form a foldablc tab or tongue, so that when the liner is elevated within the'container the upper portion of the tongue may be severed from the body of the liner and folded over the side wall means arranged on said tab for securing it in folded position whereby to support the liner in elevated position within the container so that easy access may be had to the tobacco therein.
2. Tn'combination with a tobacco tin ofrclatively deep and narrow proportions, a substantially long and narrow rectangular paper lining'closed at the 'bottoni to provide a sack for tobacco, the overlapping marginal portion of the liner having a vertical score line spaced from the free edge thereof to provide asev'e able tongue so that when the sack is pulled partly out of the tin the severable tongue may be detached and folded over the side of'the tin and fastened-in position to sup port the liner in raised position in the tin to provide facile access to the tobacco therein anclin'eans arranged on said tongue whereby it may *b seeured to the tin.
A paperline'r orsack for a container of relatively deep andnarrow roportions, said liner having asevcrable portion forming a tongue when so severed, said tongue having adhesive on its face whereby when the suck is raised in thetin, the tongue may be folded over the moutha'l edge'o'f the tin and fastened to the outer face of the tin to hold the sack in raised position to permit facile access to the contents of the sack through the narrow mouth of the container.
4:. Incombination with a container, a sack or liner having a severable portion adapted to provide a tongue, said tongue being adapted to fold over the upper edge of the container when the sack is raised therein whereby to secure the sack in such raised position to provide easy access to the contents through the mouth of the container, and an adhesive film arranged on the tongue for securing the tongue to the container.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
GEORGE A. eooon.
