SWITCH.
Applicationliled February 15, 1928. Serial IlTo. 254,550.
This invention relates to switches and, more particularly, to safety switches used for starting electrically operated apparatus or machines, and has for its object the provision of a switch of this class in which the starting member of the switch is shielded or guarded against accidentdl operation while the stopping member of the switch may be Another object is to provide a shield or guard member that ma be used in connection with standard switches without modifying any of the operating parts of the switch. X In the drawings 7 p Figure 1 is a side elevation of a switch partly broken away and having my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof.
' Figure 3 is a similar elevation having the upper portion and shield sectioned on the line III-III of Figure l.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the switch as a whole, which may be of standard design. The switch 2 is provided with an upstanding rim 3 surrounding its top plate and has the usual start and stop push-buttons land 5, respectively, which actuate standard switch mechanism (not shown).
In order to prevent the accidental operation of the start push-button and to provide for quick operation of the stop pushbuttonin caseof an emergency, I have provided a combined shield or guard and stop button actuating member 6. i
The member 6 overlies the switch 2- and consists'of a plate having a pair of mounting legs '2 or cars projecting downwardly from its'side edges adjacent its end nearest the start-button and having its other end bent downwardly to form an end wall '8. The legs 7 are apertureol to receive a pin .9 which is mounted in aperturesdn the rim 3 of the switch and which is held against displacement by the pins 10. The above construction forms a pivotal mounting for theshield or guard 6.
The end wall-8 of the member 6 is slotted, .as at 11, to receive a pin or bolt 12 mounted in the-end of the rim 3, so as to limit the imovement of and prevent displacement of the free endof 'the member 6.
The legs 7 and end wall 8 of the member "6 serve to elevate the member 6 above the operation thereof.
upper edge of the rim 3 a suflicient distance to permit access from the sides of the {switch to the start-button, while the member 6 prevents direct contact from the top with start-button 4 thus preventing accidental controlled by the switch 2 it is only neces sary to strike the guard or shield 6 which will rock about the shaft 9 and cause the but, ton 14 to depress the stop push-button 5 of the switch.
When it is desired to start the apparatus again, however, it will be necessary for the operator to insert his fingers under the member 6 from the side of the switch and depress the start-button 4. I
From the above it will be readily seen that I have provided a switch having the combined safety features of guarded start-button and quick acting stop-button.
While I have shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims. i 1
1. The combination with a switch for starting and stopping electrically operated apparatus and having independent start and stop push-buttons, of a safety shield secured to and extending over said switchand adapted to prevent direct contact with said buttons,
said shield being spaced above said, switch so as to permit access to said start-button from the sidexoi. said switch, a connection between said shield and said stop-button, and said shield being adapted to be reciprocated to operate said stop-button.
2. lhe combination with a switch for start ing and stopping electrically operated apparatus and having inde endent start and stop push-buttons, of a safety shield pivotally secured at one end to and extending in spaced relation over said switch so as to prevent direct contact' from the top of said switch with said buttons while permitting mess to said buttons from the side of said switch, means for limiting the movement and preventing the displacement of said other end of said shield, a rigid projection on said shield and in engagement with said stop-button, said projeetionbeing adapted to operate said stop-button when said shield is rocked toward said switch.
The combination with a switch for start- -ing and stopping electrically operated apparatus and having iiulependent start and stop puslnbuttons, ot a safety shield pivotally secured at one end to and extending in spaced relation over said switch so as to prevent direet contact from the top of said switch with said buttons while permitting access to said buttons from the side of said switch, a rigid button projecting downwardly from the underside of said shield and engaging said step button, and said shield bemg adapted to be rocked about its pivotal connection with said switch to force said rigid button to operate said stop-button.
In testimony whereof, I, a duly authorized oflicer of and on behalf of The First National Bank of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, have hereunto attached my signature.
