To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. EVANs, of Upland, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Street or Station Indicators and Advertising Mediums; and I do herebydeelare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains 4to make and use it, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this'speciiication, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan view of. my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view. 'Fig. 3 is a perspective view, and Figli is a vertical transverse section.
This invention has relation to combined street or station indicators` and advertising mediums for railroad-cars, and especially for street-cars; and it consistsin the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts pertaining to an indicator, embracing as its principal featuresa horizontal roller, upon which the street or station naines and the advertisements are exhibited; a band travelingover and upon said roller, and holding a number of cards upon Which the streets or stations are successively painted or indicated; a box or case within which the roller rotates, and Which has separate and distinct openings or Windows, through which the advertisements and streets or stations are exhibited, and a system of mechanical devices, through which motion is given to one or more rollers from the end or any other convenient part of the vehicle, all as hereinafter more specifically described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, A represents a streetcar, Within which are appropriatelyarranged, one on either side, near the roof, two indicators. BB designate the indicator-boxes, hav.
ing each in its front wall any number of openings or Windows, b b', corresponding, respectively, with the advertising and street or station indicating divisions of the roller. C is a cavity below the center of the box B, to contain the reserve portions of the indicator-band,
with its cards deposited in said cavity as the roller rotates. D D designate the lindicatorrollers, arranged Within the boxes B B and upon shafts D D', which project through the boxes at one end, and have bearings at the ad'- 'names of the streets or stations which are to be exhibited successively. The cavityV G, into which the band descends, -and from which it is lifted, is divided, by a central longitudinal partition, C', into two compartments, from one of which the cards are lifted, while into the' other they-are dropped. When a car reaches the endof its journey the deposited cards are redisplayed by reversing the motion of the roller. vAs thecards are dropped from the roller they fall alternately forward and backward, folding together compactly and uniformly in pairs, face to face, or back to back.
In order to effect an even `arrangement of the cards, I employ an elastic cord or ribbon, F, passing through or attached to the former,
,as shown, so as to intersect the joints alternately on opposite sides'of the band. This will prevent the surfaces, Which should lie in contact, from taking a different position.
The advertisements may be affixed to the end sections of the roller in any desirable or convenient manner.
Upon the shafts D D', near their ends, pulleys f f are arranged. A pulley, fl, is also arranged centrally between the two, ff. The three are connected by means of belts or pul` ley-cords g, so as to transmit motion from the .center one, the shaft of Which is furnished with a crank, to be turned at proper intervals by the conductor. JThese pulleys and bands are concealed at the end of the ca'r by a shield, K.
The rollers may be turned, if preferred, by' any other mechanism lthan the pulleys and y belts. v
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a strcetor station indicator, a hor.
