'rnoMAs BRENNAN, or RAGINE', WISCONSIN, Assm on 030 J. I. CASE THRESHING CHINE COMPANYLOF nAcI E, wrscoNsIN, a CORPORATION. j I 1 I SEEDING Application filed February My invention relatesto improvementsin seeding machines, andparticularly to the seed dispensing device known as a double-run feed,
- which is commonly used in connection with dispensing wheel designed to discharge seeds of a large size; Fig. 2, a similar yiew showing the opposite side of the wheel utilized for distributing smaller seeds; Fig. 3, a detall view showing a portion of the hopper equipped with my improvements; Fig. 4:, a side elevationshowing the complete dispensing device;
' and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the damper which I employ.
In said drawing, the numeral, 5, indicates a seeding machine hopper of any ordinary construction, to the under side of which the dispensing devices, 6, are secured by screws, 7, or otherwise, in a well known manner. The dispensing device 6 is of common constructlon comprising housing members, 8, 9, having a feed-wheel, 10, therein comprising a web 11,
provided with outwardly extending flanges,
12, 13, and a hub, 14, bywh'ich itjis mounted on a driving shaft, 15, in a well known manner, it being the practice to install a Series of such dispensing devices in a seeding. machine hopper to be operated simultaneously by the.
shaft 15. The flange 13 of the Wheel 10 is of smaller diameter than flange 12, and consequently the seed passage between thatside of the wheel and'housing member9 is smaller than the opposite passage formed by the flange 12 and housing 8. The upper portion of wheel 10 is protected by a guard or partition 10 as is common. However, as all 7 of the parts thus far described are common and,
well known in the seeding machine art they will be referred to hereinafter but incidentally in describing my improvement.
As stated, a number of the dispcnsingdevices 6 are installcdin the hopper 5, the bottom of the hopper being spaced, as at 18, between each pair ofdispensing devices, which MACHINE.

spaces are covered by a root-like plate ordeflector, 20, the sides, 21, 011 which may beupturned and secured'to the hopper orthe plates maybe otherwise connected thereto, It will be understood that the grain flows into. the passages, as 22, at each side of the dispensing device 5, and, when grain is being distributed of a character to flow through the larger passage of the device, the opposite or smaller passage is covered to prevent grain" from entering thereinto, and this I accomplish by inserting a damper 25 in'the smaller entrance. This damper (Fig. 5). is provided with a floor, Y26, and wall, 27 preferably embodying a grip, 28, by which the. damper may be readily placed in or removed from the entrance to the passage, the wall, 27, being curved as shown to lit the contour of the; guard 10 and thus completely enclose the passage. may also be provided with stops 29 adapted to lie against a housing member to insure that it will be properly maintained in position when inserted; lVhen the damper is thus installed it may be secured in position by any suitable means, that disclosed being a spring latch, 30, pivotally connected to the plate 20 and which may be conveniently turned so that its end will engage a slot, 31, in the damper. It will'be observed that each end of said defleetor 20 is provided with alatch 30 so that the damper at either side of the dispensing device may be secured, it being necessary according to the character of the'seed to be sown to close the larger or smaller passage as required. Itwill thus be seen that the damper is interchangeable and may be readily applied and secured to either side of the dispensing device, and if for any reason it may be desired to close both passages in some of'the devices dampers of the characterdisclosed, being. of uniform'sizc and design, can be employed interchangeably. I am aware that hinged plates or shields and the like have been em- The damper ployed for the purpose explained, but my im 1. In a seedingmachine, a dispensing device embodying a housing, a feed-wheel 1n the housing and spaced therefrom to provide seed passages in each side of the device, and a damper embodying a floor and a wall insertible over the passagesin the housing to prevent 1 the entrance of materialinto a seed passage.
2. In a seeding machine, a dispensingde-- vice, embodying a housing, a feedqvheel in the housing and spaced therefrom to provide seed passages in each side of the 'device, a
damper embodying a floor and a Wall adapted to be inserted above a seed passage to prevent the entrance of material thereinto, andineans for detachably securing the damper in position;
