Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,512, dated November 3Q, i875, applica-tion' led March 30, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern: v
Be it known that I, J. W. BLoDGEr'r, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a rotary engine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its. construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whichx m, Fig. 3. Figs. 2 and '3 are end views, and
Fig. 4 is a view of the double cut-off wheel J.
A andB represent two cylinders, of suitable unequal diameter, of thesame length, placed one on top of the other, and connected or communicating with eachother, as shown. This double vcylinder A B is, by two partitions, a a, divided into a central cut-off chamber, and 'two driving-chambers, one on each side of the central chamber. The partitions a are slipped into the cylinder, one from each end, and bear against shoulders forme around the interior of the cylinder. The th ree chambers thus formed are provided with water-cocks b, to draw the water from the same. In each partition a is a port, a, through which ports the steam is supplied alternately in each end of the double cylinder. Within the central or cut-off chamber of the double cylinder is a rotary cut-off wheel, G, secured oli a shaft, d, passing longitudinally through the center of the cylinder A. This cut-off wheel is constructed, as shown in the drawing, with a concentric passage, e, on one side, near the periphery, half-way round, and a similar passage, e', on the other side, around the other half, so as to change the steam alternately inthe driving-chambers. D is.the steam-inlet pipe, entering the central cut-off chamber, and E is the exhaust-pipe, communicating with the inner ends of both the driving-chambers. 0n the shaft d, in each of the driving-chambers, is secured a driving-cylinange or wing, h, running longitudinally on one side of it.

In the part B of the main cylinder, overeach driv ing-cylinder G, is another cylinder, H, provided with a groove, f, corresponding in size with the flange h, and on the side where this groove is the cylinder H is made thicker, so as to balance the opposite-(side. The cylinders G H run close together, so that the steam cannot pass between them, and they pass each other by the ange or wing h entering the groove j'. The two cylinders are carried around at the same speed by means of two cog-wheels, I I, of equal size, placed one on the shaft d, and the other on the shaft d of the cylinders H. These cog'wheels may be on the outside of the casing A B, or within a chamber formed at one end thereof. The shaft d passes through a steam-tight boxing at each end of the casin g A B, said boxing consisting of two cones, m and n, boredout so that one exactly [its in the other. The cone m is cast on the head of the casing, while the cone n is screwedV on the shaft d till itiit-s steam-tight over the cone m, and is held there by means of a nut, p. This does away with the usual stuffing-box, and keeps all the driving-pwer in the center of the engine.
The cut-off wheel (3above described, is for engines which are not intended to be run backward. For engines that require to be run in bothfdirections a double cut-off wheel, J, is-used,and in this case each partition a must be provided with two steam-ports w.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The combination of the central cutoff wheel C, with its steam-passages 6 6, and cylinders G G and H H, arranged in the casing A B, having two interior partitions, a a, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.,
