Description

ADJUSTABLE PNC IL HOLDER Filed Feb. 15. 192e Patented Mar. l2, QZQ.
UNITED STATES MARK srixiivs, or cnioaeo',`riiiiri\iois.
ADJUSTABLE PENCIL Henman.
Application sied February i5, 1925. semi ivo. 88,178;
rlhis invention relates to a pencil holder.
pencils always desire a longpencil. Others desire a short pencil., while some always desire a pencil of a. particular length.
`lccordingjly it is an object of this invention to provide a pencil holder which is extensible or adjustable so that the desired Combined length of the pencil and holder may be obtained by the user, and that as the pencil wears down, the holder may be lengt-hened so that the proper length is always obtainable Y The invention comprises the novel structure ano combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointedy out and defined in the appended claim.
ln the accompanying drawings-which illusf trate a Vpreferred embodiment of this invention and in which similarreference numerals refer to similar features in the differentviews Figure l is an elevational view of the pencil holder involving,` this invention and equipped with a pencil. i
Figure 2 is a part sectional and part'elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but showing the holder adjusted in view of a shorter pencil.
Figure Il is an enlarged sectional view upon the line lV-lV of Figure l.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view ol' a slight modification.
its illustrative of this invention, there isv shot-in a p i of members l. and 2 which are connected for longitudinal adjustment, whereby the eombined length thereofmay be varied. These members are preferably of tubular form and they may be made of any suitable material. they are shown as made of metal.
dlhile the longitudinal adjustment of these members may be effected in various ways, I prefer a threaded connection as illustrated in the drawings whereby relative rotation of the members will produce the desired adjustment, the member 2 being` preferably threaded in the member l. Y
rlhe free end of the memberv 1 is designed for containinv' a pencil 3, and the free end of` the member Q, is designed for retaining an eraser il which may be Screwed into the threaded end of the member 2.
In the present instance,
i y rlhe terminal portions of the member l are lt well known that some users of lead smooth and not threaded, only an intermediate portion of the member l is threaded.' These terminal portions are split as indicated at 5 and provider1 with upwardly offset cani portions (i. Metal bands 7 y'are slidably mounted upon these terminal portions and when these bands are adjusted over the cam portions 6, they will exert a clamping action to bind the pencil 3 in the holder, and the niembei 2 in the member l. These bands are confined between suitably spaced stop ribs 8 and 9 on the member l. `When the bands are shifted against the stop ribs 9, the clamping action will be vrelieved,as is obvious.
ln Figure 5, there is shown a slight modification of the `clamping means for clamping the pencil in the holder and for clamping the extension member in adjusted position. It will be noted that the pencil holding member l is externally threaded throughout itsex-k tent and that the ends have ClivergginfiV or sloping' surfaces, as indicated atb, to `provide la wedging` or clampingl action when the internally threaded bands *la are threaded thereon.
lt will be appreciated that this holder can ybe readily adjusted to provide the proper lengt-h, and that it can be cheaply manufactured and assembled, and that as the pencil wears down, it can be lengthened by adjustinentto maintain a predetermined length. i
l am aware Vthat many changes may be made. and numerous details of construction may be varied through a'wide range without departingi` from the principles of this invention, and l therefore do not purpose limiting tl e' patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated. by the prior art.
l claim as this invention t ln an extensible pencil holder, a hollow member having` a split end with a raised poih` tion, a ring surrounding said split end, a second hollow member in threaded relation with *l ft` b 'l 0' b 0' l`"t 1'le tie us mem ci, sain iin ein,D siii ao c over said raised portion for clamping said members together.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto subscribed iny naine.
