IMPROVEMENT iN CAMERAS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 70,465, dated November 30, 1875; application filed November 8, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERAsTUs B. BARKER, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Camera-Boxes, of which the following is a specification Plate holders or carriages have been made to slide across the back of the camera-box, and in some instances conical rollers have been employed to support such holder, but there is considerable friction in moving a conical roller along in a straight line, and the surface ofthe holder is pressed against the back of the cam era and causes unnecessary friction.

My invention consists in combining with a plate-holder supporting-rollers, that are arranged to cause the holder to bear against the back of the camera-box, and rollers that determine the approach of such holder to the camera-box and relieve the friction. At the same time the surface of the holder is sufciently close to that of the box as to prevent light reaching the plate.

In the drawing, Figure l is a front view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, of a portion of said camera-box.

a represents the back of the camera-box, and b is the plate-holder, in the form of a frame, adapted to receive the photographic plate. These parts are ofany usual character.

There is a sill or bottom-flange, c, at the lower edge of the plate holder or slide b, and also a guide-rib, d, at the upper part of such holder at the back thereof, which rib d slides behind the tongue d that is formed at the edge ofthe oi'set in the back cof the camerabox.

rlhere are rollers e beneath the flange or sill c. These rollers are preferably upon the stationary -studs f, but they might be upon the ange or sill c, and run upon a stationary ange proholder frame, and bear against the back of the camera-box', and, if desired, similar rollers can be applied at the lower part of the plateholder.

By this construction the plate-holder is sufciently free to be moved with ease, and there is no risk of the parts being retained by friction, but the holder can be moved freely one way or the other in taking two pictures upon one plate, without disturbing the camera-box. The stop l is applied as usual to limit the movement of the plate-holder.

I do not claim rollers upon which the plateholder carriage is suspended. These, however, do not lessen the friction in a horizontal direction of the carriage against the back ofthe camera-box.

I claim as my invention- The combination, with the plateholder carriage and ledge or sill c, of the rollers e below that sill, and the rollers i at the back of the carriage, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
