Description

J. SHARP March 5; 1929.
SIFTER Filed March 15, 1927 Patented Mar. 5, 1 929.
UNITEDSTATES ra rsnrorrlcs.
:romv SHARP, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Application filed March 15, 1827. Serial No. 175,507.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved form of sifter for flour or other powdered materials and is a modification of the construction shown in my previous application, Ser. No. 163,321 filed January 25, 1927, for vibratablesifter in which spaced vibratable arms are passed backwards and forwards over a wire mesh, thus pressing the fine material through the mesh and breaking up lumps that may he formed in the material.
In this device a different means are employed for oscillating the vihratable arms or heaters. Also a novel construction is shown, in which the manufacture is simplified and 15 the parts are adjustable and more easily assembled.
The invention is hereinafter described, exemplified in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the device. Fig. 1 is a perspective of the actuating spring. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a modified form. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the spring shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 4 is a perspective of one formof spring beater arms. Fig. 5 is a perspective of an adjustable form constructed in three portions and divided eyelet connecting sleeves for the 30 crank shaft portion and arms. Fig. 6 is a transverse section showing the manner of assembling the eyelet sleeves and rivet jour-' nals.
In these views, A is a container such as a flour scoop, containing a semi-spherical straineror sieve B, therein. C, C in Figs. 1 and 2 show spaced spring beater arms curved to conform to the contour of the sieve and extending in overlapping position in opposite directions from the extremities'D, D of an integral cranked member E. i
The extremities of the cranked member or shaft E are coiled to form sleeve bearings that are mounted upon the rivet journals F, F, upon which the vibratable arms oscillate freely.
The crank G is operated by means of a connecting rod H pivotably attached to the actu- .helever is easily ope 'ated by the thumb while the hand is grasping the handle and after being pushed forward by the thumb, its spring action will return it to place. I
The spring lever shown in Figs. 3 and 8 exerts a pulling action in lieu of a pushing action.- Here the angle of the V shaped lever is positioned adjacent to the wall of the con taincr and the upper side is pulled down by the thumb. A metal arm Oattached at P to the upper arm of me lever operates the connecting rod to pull the crank forward and the spring action of the lever returns the rod, to place. i V
In Fig. 5 the heater arms are doubled in number and are separately constructed in the form of loops Q having tree extremities R, R. Also a separate cranked shaft S is shown having eyes T formed in its ends. Bearings are formed of eyelet sleeves V, V telescoped over each other and the flanges of the eyelets enclose the eyes of the crank shaft end oi the beater arms. The unit bearings thus constructed are sleeved over the rivet journals which are secured in the walls A of the container.
Each rivet 1V, is provided with a wide shoulder or flange which prevents the powdered, material from escaping from the rivet hole in the wall and an external washer N protects the outside opening.
The outer end of the rivet is preferably hollowed out to facilitate riveting it over the washer.
In this device the overlapping spring outer arms are spaced apart and vibrate when oscillated so as to agitate the fine material and pass it backwards and forwards between them thus breaking up lumps and forcing it through the sieve. When a number of arms are employed as in Figure 5 the action is much facilitated.
The device shown inFigure 5 is also adjustable since the beater arms may be revolved to any desired angle relatively to the axis of the crank shaft, and then are secured in the desired position.
The eyelets and enclosed eyes may be dipped in solder, if necessary after assembling them to secure rigidity of theconnections.
Having described the invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. In a device of the character described, in combination a container, a sieve therein,
spring heaters, and a common crank shaft for operating the same, a connecting rod, and a spring lever for operating said rod, and a handle for said container, said lever being secured upon said handle, said heaters being integrally connected with said crank shaft and provided with looped eyes at the junction thereof and riveted studs oppositely secured. in the walls of said containers and serving as ournals for said looped eyes.
2. I i a device of the character described, in combination a container, a sieve therein, spring heaters pivoted in said container, and a common crank shaft for operating the same, a connecting rod, and a spring lever for operating the said rod, and a handle for said container, said lever being secured upon said handle, said lever having a spring arm to which said rod is pivoted, said crank shaft having a central looped eye for attachmentto said rod, and looped eyes connecting the out or extremities of said crank shaft and beater arms and opposed studs in the Walls of stud containers provided with inner shoulders preventing the escape of flour through said Walls, said looped eyes being sleeved over said studs.
3. In a device of the character described, a
container having a handle, spring beater arms vibratable in said container, a common crank shaft therefor, a connecting rod, a V shaped spring lever having one side secured to said handle, the outer end of saidconnecting rod being pivotably connected to said other side of said lever.
4:. In a device of the character described, in combination a container having a handle, a sieve in said container, spring heaters, and a common crank shaft therefor pivoted in said container, a connecting rod for said crank, on said shaft, a- V shaped spring lever having its lower side secured to said handle, and having its upper side pivotally attached to said connecting rod, said V-shaped lever having means for attaching it to the upper edge of the container, and also having guide means for said rod adjacent to said attaching means.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JOHN SHARP.
