The main object is to provide a device of this character which may be easily and quick ly applied. tothe chassis of various makes et motor vehicles and other running gear without material, itx any, alteration thereof.

The guides 5lon the front end of the box and transverse partition 'A8- for receiving the central lengthwise partition' --50 are similar to the guides-4%@ shown in Figure l ,while the Ylower edge Vvof this lengthwise partition is provided-with flanges n 50- similar to the flanges -48- to rest upon the bottom of thebox. y These bottom iianges or 'feet -4e8- and -50- on the lower edges of the Partitions 48- and -50- also serve to reinforce or stiifenfsaid partitions, the upper edges of both partitions being also reinforced by angle irons 48-f and --50-`. rlhe opposite ends. of the reinforcing flanges -LlSL-on the upperedge of the partition -48- are preferably extended over the upper edges ofthe adjacent sides of the box to be bolted thereto by clamping bolts/ 52 to hold said partition against vertical movement if desired, but mainly to assist in holding the sides of the box against spreadving under lateral pressure ofthe load if it should be found to bel necessary.

Y The opposite sides of .the box adjacent the discharge openings ..-40- converge outwardly or laterally in the direction' of discharge and in like manner the side walls of iio the box convergerearwardly in the direction c of the rearend discharge opening.
; The `obj ect .of these outward .converging ing when dumping the load and thereby to avoid the necessity of shoveling the material from the corners toward the openings.
'lhis construction is particularly advantageous in side-delivery dump boxes in that the tilting ot the box in either direction will cause the converging sides ot' the box or compartments to act as an inclined chute in which the sides as well as the bottom ot' the box or compartment will be inclined downwardly toward the discharge opening thereby assuring a complete discharge of the material through said opening when the box is tilted to the required angle.
Any suitable means may be provided for openingI the gates -43- one at a time and for this purpose each gate is provided with a separate operating lever -60-, those at each side of the box being pivoted at 6lto the upper intervening portion of the cor respondingside o1Q the box to swing about the same axis, said levers extending in opposite directions lengthwise of the box to opposite sides ot their respective gates to which they are connected by links -62, Figure l, the free ends of the levers being provided with suitable handles --60 by which they may be rocked vertically tor opening` and closing their respective gates 43%.
W'hen the gates are closed by the downward rocking movement of their respectivel .levers the latter will be engaged in suitable keepers m64ron the adjacent sides of the box for holding the closed gates against outward swinging movement by pressure oi' the load Within the box.
The upper edge of each gate -43- is alsoY provided with a keeper G5- adapted to engage the outer face of the upper edge of the corresponding drop lid 46M when the corresponding gates -45- and lid -46- are closed thereby assuring the retention of those parts intheir closed position as long as the gate -l3 is closed. j
Suitable means is provided for preventing the application ot the hand crank -28 to the rear end .-27- of the shaft -24- until the lever 21 has been operated to unlock the locking bars H and -15- and for this purpose is provided a guard lever 70- extending forwardly and rearwardly directly under the portion of the lever -QL- between its pivot -19- and its connection with the loclring bar as shown in Figure 9 and having its trent end pivoted at M7lto the rear cross bar -S-- ot the main supporting frame and its rear end provided with a lateral odset -72- movable to and from a position across the rear end -27- of tne shaft -24r when the hand crank 28 is removed.
The intermediate portion of. the guard lever T0- is provided with .a cam slot -73- directly under the adjacent portion ot' the lever.--2lwhich latter is provided with a pin -7lnormally projecting into the cam slot -73-, said cam slot being inclined laterally and rearwardly from the stud or pin -74- toward the handle end 2lof the lever -18-.
The guard lever -70- is held in its operative position with its offset end T2- across the rear end of the shaft 24.- by means of a spring -75-, Figure 9, so that the end wall of the cam slot *73- Will be yieldingly held against the pin -74 The lever -18 is also held in its normal locking position by means of a spring --75-7 Figure 6. j
rlhe cam slot -73- is also provided with a rearward oitset extension -73-, the open side ot' the slot being closed by a plate -77- to prevent displacement ot the pin 7fl from the cam slot #73.
Referring again to the box -2- it is pref# erably made octagonal with the openings ot both pairs in the central portions of opposite lengthwise sides and the remaining portions of said sides at the front and rear of the openings div-erging or inclined inwardly, the central portions of the lengthwise sides of the box in which are the openings -40- being parallel.
rThe opposite ends of the box are also parallel and, therefore, all of the angles at the junctions of the eight sides of the box are obtuse to facilitate the discharge of the material from either side of the box when tilted in that direction.
Operation.
it is desired to discharge the load from one side or the other of the box by tilting the same laterally in the required direction as for example as shown in Figure l, then, the first operation is to rock the lever #21- rearwardly from the position shown by full lines in Figure 9 to the position shown `by dotted lines for withdrawing the locking rods 15jand -15 from their locking positions during which operation the pin 74r- Will be drawn against the rear wall oi the cam slot -73- with a sliding engagement therewith for forcing the guard lever from the position shown by full lines in Figure 9 to the position shown by dotted lines therein thereby Withdrawing the oiset portion m'T2- out of registration with the rear end -27- ofthe shaft 24tto permit the application of the hand crank -28- to the extension -27-.
As soon as the guard lever -70- has been tripped in the manner just described, the pin JM- will have entered the offset -73- of the cam slot 7S- thereby locking the lever -2lin its locked releasing` position and also holding the guard lever in its tripping position.

lVhen the hand crank-l-QS- hasbeen appliedto the extension -27- it is rotated in the proper direction to transmit similar rotarymovementto the shaft -24-- which, through the medium of the gear train -23-, will rotatethe crank shaft -25- in the desired direction.
This rotation of the crankshaft 25- will cause its crank arms 25" to move in the same direction thereby V'forcing the pitman sections-BS- at the corresponding side 'of the axis of the crank shaft 25M upward- `lwill move from the, corresponding bearings -9-- and -9--. During this movement of the crank arms --25`in on-e direction for tilting the corresponding side Vof the box upwardly the secof the box will be partially withdrawn from their sleeve sections 35 and this movement is continued until the crank arms -25- and lifting pitmen S3-- assume a practi-` cally straight line. A That is, the crank arms ---25-d andextensible pitmen 33- constitute toggles by which the box is raised and lowered upon one or the other of its fulcrums -9' and 7 9- according to the direction of rotation of the crank shaft *S25- and these pitmen4 are constructed so that when those of either'side are used for lifting the corresponding side of vthe box to its maximum elevation ory until the jt'oggles are straightened the pitmen at the during a 'part of that movement Vand will then begin to shorten, reaching the `minimum y,shortening movement atabout thertime the first-named toggle assumes a straightened po- 's ition whereby the second-named pitmen will act vasa stop for preventing the return movement` ofV thebox when the operating shaft `-24 is locked by Vmeans ofthe ratchet -i30- land pawl #3l-" it being understoodV that the vpavvl 31A-is reversible to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel -30-\ at either side'o'f its vaxis to hold thershaft and part operated thereby in' its box tilting position.

In likemanner, the operation of the shaft 2aand parts actuated thereby may be reversed for causing the discharge of thev load from the other side of the box than that tothe bodyat opposite sides of the axis of thev shaft whereby when the shaft is rotated in'one direction the corresponding pitman will elevate the adjacent portion of the body and cause an extensionof'the other pitman.'

In a vehicle of the character described, a frame having fulcrums in spaced relation equal distances from and at opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the frame, a shaft journalcd on the frame midway between the fulcra and provided with longitudinally spaced crank arms, a dump body fulcrumed on said bearings to tilt in opposite directions about either fulcrum, a pair of pitmen having one end connected to one of the crank arms and their opposite ends pivotally connected to the body at opposite sides of the crank shaft, an additional pair of pitmen having one end connected to the other crank arm and their opposite ends pivotally connected to the body at opposite sides of the crank shaft, each pitman being composed of sections slidable one upon the other, and means for rotating the crank shaft in reverse directions,

In a side delivery dump boX, a supporting frame having fulcrum bearings on opposite lengthwise sides thereof, a dump body tiltable laterally about either of said bearings, and means for effecting said tilting 1novement7 said means including a crank shaft and pitman connections between the crank shaft and body, said pitman connections each composed of sections slidable one upon the other and means for rotating the crank shaft.

In a vehicle of the character described, a frame having fulcrum bearings in spaced relation equal distances from and at opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the frame, a dump body fulcrumed on said bearings to tilt in oppositev directions about either fulcrum, means for tilting said body aboutV either fulcrum including a rotary shaft having means for receiving a hand crank by which it may be rotated, means for locking and releasing the body in and from its normal position of rest upon both fulcrums, and means controlled by the locking means for preventing the placement of the hand crank upon the shaft when the locking means is in its locking position.
