SSYTIX'IM'JI I PLATE.
Application fi1ed,Ap1'il 3, 1925. Serial No. 20,337.
My invention relates to switch plates which at the present time has its chief application to radio power units althoughobviously not lin'iited thereto.
In radio power units,- particularly those units including A and B batteries, it is advisable to shift the wires, leading to the receiving set at various times. able form of connection for these Wires is a grip-and-prod arrangement so that the connections may be changed by merely plugging the grip from one prod to another., It is quite common at the present time to build one container with the A and B batteries and the charging outfit therein as a unit. In such a device the terminals of the various circuits are brought together at a common point and prods attachedto the circuits.
My invention is an improvement on the arrangement shown on my previous application, Serial No. 649,461, filedJuly 5, 1923,
following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a container with my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a section showing the manner of applying the device of my invention to the container; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the terminal plate.
The container 1 may have mounted therein any suitable device or devices,such as A, B and C batteries, charging outfit, etc. In one of the walls of the container is provided an opening 2. The terminal plate 3 of insulating material is fastened on the inside of the wall 4 of the container 1 and prods 5 are fastened on the terminal plate 8 in a suitable manner. In the form shown, Fig. 2, these PI'OClS have a reduced end portion on which a nut 6 is screwed so as to firmly hold the prod in place. A wire 7 is placed in position and a second nut 8 screwed onto the prods 5 to hold the wire 7 in place. Obviously any form of device may be used to fasten the prods on the terminal plate or'to fasten the wires to the prods. On the outside of the wall 4 is placed a face plate 9. The plate 9 has openings corresponding to the openings in which the prods 5 are placed and is held in place by screw bolts 10 which also hold the terminal plate 3 in place. may be used to hold these plates in place. In the specific form shown the face plate 9 has a countersunk portion 11 so as to bring the The most suit-v Any form of device partof the .plate 9 near the outer tips of v the prods. It may or may not be necessary to countersink the face plate depending upon the thickness of the wall 4; and the length of the prods. The purpose should be to bring the face plate close to the tips of the prods, and preferably the prods should not extend through the openings inthe face plate. The face plate is provided with legends neareach opening designating the circuit to which the prod belongs. These legends are shown plainly in Fig. 1. p i
It frequently happens that a manufacturer has several different devices upon whichthis invention may be used and upon which devices are used different numbers and arrangements of prods. In such cases I have found it of greatut-ility to provide the terminal plate 3 with openings so arranged as to accommodate prods for any of the devices manufactured. For instance, in Fig. 3 it will be noted that there are live of the openings containing prods. and there are seven extra openings 12 which contain no prods. The face plate 9 is made specially for each device and therefore contains only such openings as are necessary to furnish access to the prods mounted on the terminal plates This arrangement has many desirable features which will be readily apparent.
My invention has many advantages, among which may be mentioned that the prods are inset into the side of the cabinet and therefore do not project beyond the cabinet wall and are therefore protected against damage in shipment; a face plate protects the projecting prods against injury and also against accidental short circuit; the face plate carries the legends for the various prods thereby bringing the legends out substantially on the face of the cabinet; wall where they may be readily read or observed; a terminal plate may be made which is standard for all the various devices in a give nline of manufacture and provision made for the placing of the desired number and arrangement of prods with a face plate having openings particularly designed for each apparatus simplifying the manufacturing operations. Other advantages of less importance will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A terminal structure for the enclosing cabinet of an electric power apparatus, the cabinet having an opening in one side, said structure comprising a plate of insulating material disposed against the inner surface of the cabinet and covering said opening, a plurality of prods mounted on said plate Within the confines of saidopening. and projecting outwardly and terminating short of the surface of the outside of the cabinet, a face plate disposed against the outside of the cabinet and having a sunken central portion fitting Within said opening, said sunken portion having holes therein of larger diameter than and registering with said prods, and securing members passing through the face plate, the'side of the cabinet and said first named plate for maintaining the parts in assembled relation. I
2. A terminal structure for a cabinet enclosing an electrical power apparatus, the cabinet having an opening in one side, comprising a plate of insulating material disposed against the inner surface of the side of the cabinet and covering said opening, said plate having a plurality of holes therein Within the confines of said opening, a plurality of prods less in number than said holes and having threaded stems engageable Within selected ones of said holes and carrying clamping nuts, and a face plate secured to the outer face of the cabinet at the opening and having holes therein registering With the selected arrangement of the prods.
3. A terminal structure for a cabinet enclosing an electrical power apparatus, the cabinet having an opening in one side, comprising a plate of insulating material disposed against the inner surface of the side of the cabinet and covering said opening, said plate having a plurality of holes therein Within the confines of said opening, a plurality of prods less in number than said holes and having threaded stems engageable Within selected ones of said holes and carrying clamping nuts, and a face plate secured to the outer face of the cabinet at the opening and having holes therein registering with the selected arrangement of the prods, the prods terminating ithin the holes in the face plate.
