EDWIN A. ROBERTSON, F SYRACUSE, INDIANA, ASSIG-NOB, BY MESIIE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE PERMUTIT COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A COEPURATION OF DELAWARE.
COMBINED SEEET-METAL TANK AND SUPPORTING BASE.
Application filed June 15,
My invention relates to a combined sheet metal tank and supporting base for the tank, made by forming one head of the tank in a supporting base and a tank of suitable size and shape with one head omitted, then pl acing; the open end of the tank element in po sition on the base element so that the head formed in the base is in proper position to form one end of the tank, then welding the tank to the base.
Such construction makes a light, cheap, seamless structure, using the least possible material, especially adapted to resist corrosion, and this is the principal object ot my invention.
The particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration is a twin tank construction on a supporting base, in which the heads for both tanks are formed, adapted for use on a zeolite water softener.
Figure 1 is a vertical axial section through the tanks and base, the upper ends of the tanks being broken away, and
Fig. 2, is a cross section on the line 2-2 of deterring now to the drawings, A. is a cylindrical, sheet metal tank in which a bed ot zeolite is placed, and S is a cylindrical, sheet metal tank in which salt and water are placed to term brine, the fluid used to regenerate the zeolites when their water softening capacity has become exhausted. B is the sheet metal base whose downwardly turned edge Z2 formsa flange which rests on the floor, A downwardly bulging portion b of the base B is otthe same diameter as the tank S, and when the open end of: said tank S) is fitted in place on the base B, over the de- 1927. Serial No. 198,992.
pressed portion 5 the tank and base are welded together all around at b tornnng a leak-tight, seamless joint.
In like manner above a similar bulging portion 6 is welded all around at 12* the open end of the tank A. it w ll be seen that the bulging portion 5 ot the base B forms the convex bottom head of the tank S, and the bulging portion 2') forms the convex bottom head of the tank A.
The light, sturdy structure so formed uses the least possible material, requires little labor and is most efiicient in minimizing corr rosion. Lapped and riveted joints are omit" ted, and sharp bends adjacent the weld are avoided 1n order notto strain the metal unduly.
I claim as invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States the junction of the base and shell, said shell being positioned around the circumference of the depressed portion and on said horizontal portion of the base.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EDWIN A. nonnnrsou.
