-"Another object of 'my invention is to provide an apparatus of the character specified having a c lindrical washin drum which facilitates t e uniform distri ution of pressure throughout the whole body of water within which the washing and selecting actions are efi'ected. Another object of my invention is to ro-. vide means whereby the washing and se ecting apparatus is constructed with a minimum amount of material, the parts being arranged so as not to decrease the strength thereof.
A further object of my inventionis to provide a piston structure whereby the operation of the piston does not cause an unfavorable disturbance of the coal treate A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the coal selected can readily be taken from the selecting drum.

The wall of tube i has a plurality. of slate discharging apertures 6 above the central portion of the partition 3 and these apertures are adapted to be shut and opened by a suitable plunger 7 which is operated by a handle 8 through a link 9. The tube 4 has a plurality of other slate discharging apertures 10 open ing into the bottom portion of the dru n 1.
The apparatus also comprises a piston chamber 11 communicating" with the lower compartment of the drum below the partition 3, and supplied with water through a port 12 I which. is in communication with a suitable water supply, not shown.

In operation, coal to he treated is fed through a suitable opening provided in the cover 25 into the drum 1 over the partition 3, and water is fed into the drum through the port 12. The shaft 17 is driven by a driving motor, not shown.
The piston 13 reciprocates within the chamber 11 and periodically presses and releases the Water contained in the drum 1.
Slate and coal of a small size drops through the holes of perforated partition 3 into the conical bottom of the drum and are discharged or expelled through the openings 10 and, then the tube 4 to the exterior.
,Above the partition 3, the coal of medium or large size is subjected to the periodical up and down action of the water and by the aid of the floating action of the water the coal of good quality having less density is floated on the upper layer, while the coal of worse quality having heavier density is caused to sin down.
The wings 26, which are preferably ro tated at a speed of one fifth to one seventh the stroke of the piston ather up the coal of best quality which is ischarged through the outlet 30 to the exterior, while the coal of medium quality is gathered and discharged through the gate openin 27. As previously disclosed, the piston 13 is provided with s ring valves 14, there is no trouble ofdrafting the coal over the parti tion '3 through the liolesthereof when the.
piston is in its backward stroke.
It must also be noted that the bottom of the drum has a conical shape which facilitates the uniform propagation of waterpresmenses sure and also the gathering and discharging of the slate and fine coal. The conical form of the partition 3 also effects a similar function.
The drum 1 has substantially a cylindrical form and it will be obvious t at the structure can be the lightest in comparison to a predetermined water pressure and also facilitate a uniform propagation of the Water and thepressure thereof.
Although 'l have illustrated only one example of the invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having now particularly described the invention what I claim is:
In a coal washing and selecting ap aratus, a selectingdrum having a conica bottom, a conical perforated partition in said drum dividing the same into compartments, the upper compartment of the drum having a selected coal outlet, a cylindrical tube arranged vertically in the drum and provided with slate dischar ing apertures positioned adjacent the partition and the bottom, a plunger valve operating in the tube, a rod arranged through the top of the drum, a tubular shaft surrounding the rod and terminating short of the tube, a pair of horizontal wings carried by the shaft and disposed one above the'other and each being in the form of an involute curve, the lower wing being shorter than the upper wing-so that coal is gradually selected while being Washed and carried fromthe central part to the outer part of the drum while the upper and longer wing serves the same purpose as the lower wing and in addition acts to finally drive the good selected coal through the coal outlet in the upper part of the drum, and the conical shape of the partition and the bottom of the drum facilitating the delivery of slate through the apertures into the tube,
