Description

Patented Jan. 15, 1929.
ALFRED C. SCI-IMOHL, 0F BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 KOPPEL IN- DUSTRIAL CAR AND EQUIPIMIIEHW'ILy COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A
CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR FOR DUMP-CAR BODIES'.
Application filed January 28, 1928.
This invention relates to dump cars, and more particularly to that type of dump car in which the side wall-of the car body comprises a single or a plurality of movable doors, and has for an object the provision of a door for such a car that is strong, rigid andwill resist distortion when the weight of the lading comes in contact with 1t.
Another object of the invention'is to provide each side of a` dump car with a movable door having a rigid metal framing which is easily removed for replacing or repairing any broken member of the door body.
A further object is the provision of replaceable stiffening means for such dump car body doors.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side View of the door; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is an endvview of the door; Fig. 4 is a section alongthe lines l-land Fig. 5 is a. section along the lines 5 5.
Referring' now in detail to the drawings, the reference character l indicates a metal door frame which comprises a top member 2, bottom member 3 and end members 4, all of these members are channel shapedl in cross-section having their flanges presented inwardly. The flanges of the end members e' overlap and are secured to the flanges of the top and bottom members. Within the door frame, boards 5 are provided which are placed edge to edge and extended for substantially the full length of the door. The upper board throughout its length is overlapped by the inner flange of the top member 2, and the lower board throughout its length is overlapped by the inner flange of the bottom member 8, while the ends of all the boards are overlapped by the inner flanges of the end members 4c. Between the outer flanges of the top and bottom members and the boards 5 the fillers 6 are provided which extend longitudinally for substantially the full length of the boards 5, each one of these` fillers is secured at intervals throughout 'its length to its respective top or bottom member suitable means which pass through the outer flange of the top or bottom member, filler 6, boards 5 and inner flange of the top or bottom member.
To strengthen and stiften the door, batl by bolts or otherv Serial N0. `250,179.
tens 7 are provided which extendvertically between the fillers 6. Extending from each of these battens there is a strap or plate 8 which is disposed vertically and has its top and bottom portions flanged inwardly. The top and bottom portions of this member extend between the outer ianges of the top and bottom members respectively, there being grooves 9 formed in the top and bottom fillers to accommodate these portions of the member 8. Adjacent the upper edge of the door the channel shaped n 6 and strap 8 are connected by a through bolt 10, and adjacent the lower edge of the door the channel shaped bottom member 3, filler 6 and the strap 8 are connectedby a bolt 10. Intermediate the top and bottom members 2 and 3, the battens 7, boards 5 and strap 8 are secured together by bolts 11.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a door for dump cars, channel shaped top, bottom and overlapping end members forming a frame enclosing longitudinal wood body members, spaced transverse metal bracing, `intermediate said end members, extending between and secured to said top and bottom members, wood lillers between the wood body members and said top, bottom and end members and transverse bracing members, the whole Vsecured by through bolts.
2. A discharge door for dump cars comprising :U-shaped top and bottom members extending for substantially the full length Iof the door and U-shaped end members overlapping said top and bottom members, removable longitudinal wood body members intermediate said top, bottom and end members, transverse wood battens intermediate the ends and enclosed between the top and bottom members and the whole secured together by through bolts.
3. A discharge door for dump A4cars comprising parallel top, bottom and interme diate members, said top and bottom members being of less length than said intermediate lmembers, spaced ltransverse metal members engaging the intermediate members and secured to said top and bottom members, and end members secured to and member 2, fillerk bers, l-wood "menibers'witb said'end members overlapping,-
enclosing said top, bottom members.
4:. A discharge door ordump A'ears having channel shaped top, bottom and end members, longitudinal wood bodvmembers intermediate said top, bottom and end memill'ers'ior said top and :bottom and intermediate the top and bottom members to Jform a unit, transverse metal braces, intermediate tlie.end members, extending between and secured to said top and bottom fmembers, #and removable wood batten fillers between said longitudinal and transverse members.
5. A discharge door t'or dump oars, having channel shaped top and bottom memibers with :their Vflanges enclosing longitudi- "nal :wood .body members, wood `fillers between said body members and anges, ebannel shaped end members overlapping the ends 'of saidtop, Lbottom andbody members,
"transverse `metaly bracing` "members Aengaging said 'fillers and'ilanges, andwvoolllers between vthe ,body members and said end and transverse members.
