This invention relates to a fastening means for window sashes of various kinds, shutters, covers, or doors, or other closures, having a pair (if-associated members which it is desired to secure together,- and many and cannot be easily tampered with or improperly opened; and to this and other ends, the invention consistsessentiallyin the construct-ion, combination, and arrangementof parts, substantially as willbe hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating my invention Figure 1 is a verticalcross-sectionof the meeting rails of an upper and lower window sash, with my improved fastening means applied thereto, the view being in section on the line 1, 1, of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same fastener shown in Figure 1, delineated as arranged with portions of the sash rails to which the parts are secured.
Figure 3 is a detail cross-section on the line 3, 3, of Figure 1.
The upperand lower sashes 3 and 4 of a window are given merely as an example of means with which my fastener may be used. I am not to be confined thereto.
I- have therefore shown the lower rail 1 of the top sash 4, having a fragment of the window glass 1 attached thereto, and upper rail 2 of the lower sash 3, having a frag ment of the window pane 2 fastened thereon; said rails 1 and 2 being the horizontal meeting rails of a window which are commonly provided with a fastener whose parts may be interengaged when the window is closed so as to prevent any unauthorized entry from without, and which parts may be easily disengaged from each other at any time from within when it is desired to open the window. The meeting edges of rails 1 and 2 are sometimes beveled as shown to make a tighter joint.
Secured to one of these sash rails, as 1 of the upper sash, is a stationary catch or hook device, consisting of an upright post 5 with an integral base 5 secured to the rail 1 by screws 9, the upper part of the post 5 being formed in Etheshape of ahook with a horizontal part terminating in depending lug8 so thata, recess 18 may be provided between lug 8 and post v5, which recess 18 can be engaged by some other hooked or lug-provided member on. the other sash. The post '5 is right-angled in cross-section or otherwise shaped to supply avertical wall 5 (see Figure 8) atright angles :to the rest .of the post, and closing one end of slot or recess 18, so that the.
fastening device or hook that engages therewith may strike against -vall ,5" whenthe parts are 1n locking relation.
7 designates fastening baror rod, which may be round or square .orany other shape and which is swivele'd .in a sta'tionarylbase 6 that-is secured .to the; other sash rail 2 by screws 10 so thatvsaid fastener may be moved about in 'horiz ontalplane in COH'.
venient proximity to the stationary catch member on the other sash. This tubular bar or rod 7 has a vertical integral pin 19 thereon which is journaled loosely in a hole in the base 6, with a head to keep the pin in place, and on this loose pin the rod or bar 7 can be turned about, and moved back or forth in relation to the stationary member 5. Also the bar or rod 7 has on one end a vertical lip or lug 17 which is calculated to enter slot 18 and engage behind the lug 8. One end of slot 18 is open so thatthe lug 17 can easily enter, but the other end of slot 18 is closed by wall 5 and hence when the proper engagement has been madebetween lug 17 and the hooked end of the stationary catch device, said lug will strike against wall 5 to keep it from going too far and disengaging at the wrong time. 7
Thus the hooked stationary catch member and the hooked movable bar member may readily engage with each other and when so engaged the two sashes of a window, or any other two parts that are related to each other similarly to'the sashes of a window, will effectually be connected to each other,
so that neither one canbe moved until the fastener is disengaged.
Qf course this fastener is effective as de-, scribed within certain limits, but in the case of a window that might be broken, or any door that might be cut, it might be possible to gain access to the fastener and unfasten it. I aim to make this impossible, and I have provided fastening means for the purpose. The member 7 is provided with a passage or is tubular, and therein is a locking rod 11, which has a terminal smaller screw-threaded section 12 that screws into a hole 16 in post 5, and it has also a screw-threaded section 1 1 near the other end that screws into a screwwill have its longitudinal passage aligned with the passage 16 in post 5, so that there-- by turning the head 13 the screw-threaded rodll may be caused to engage the thread 21 and also the threads in passage 16, so
that the engagement of lug 17 in slot 18 and behind lug 8-w-ill be very strongly effected and maintained and the parts cannot be separated without rotating'the head 13 reversely so as to disconnect them.
Many changes in the precise details may be made to adapt the invention for use in a great variety of places and of structures,
such as windows, doors of various kinds, closures, shutters and the like, all within the scope of the ensuing claims.
What I claim, is: v
1. In a device 01 the class described, the combination with a catch having a post provided with a lug to form a slot between the lug and post, of a pivoted movablehollow member having alug adapted to enter said slot and engage the lug on the catch, and a fastening rod in the hollow member having a screw-threaded end that 'screws'into an opening in the post portion of the catch and a second screw-threaded section that engages into a threaded portion of the hollow member, said rod having a shouldered head for use in operating it.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hook-shaped catch member of a movable member provided with a passage through it and also a lug, which member has a headed downwardly'projecting pin for swivelling, a base receiving the pin, and a fastening rod in the passage of the said member, said rod having a screw threaded section engaging a threaded opening in the catch member and a second screw threaded section engaginga threaded part of the passage in the aforesaid member, said rod having a head for operating it. I
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix 1n signature.
DENNIS JOSEPH GALLAGHER.
