' This invention relates to multi-stage air 7 compressors or water pumps.
-Animp'ortant object of the invention'is to provide in a device of this character a construction which may be readily manufactured and which will provide a'compact and eflicient mechanism for fpumping fluids 'A further object theinventlon 1s to pro- .vide in" a device of this character a construction such that] when the apparatus'is used as a water pump, the water may be raised to a greater level than is ordinarily possible with such apparatus.
A further and more specific object of the invention is to prOvideIin a construction of this charactera multi stage impeller organization in which the impellersof the different stages are arranged in series and are co-axial and the driving mechanism therefor is disposed at one end of the completed structure.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in; the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of apump constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring now morefparticularly to the J drawin s, the numeral .10 'generallydesig nates a ase having arranged thereon a hori-- zontally disposed cylindrlcal casing, gener-' ally designated at 11, and formed in two sections 12 and13 bolted together. At one end, this casing communicates with an intake neck 14 which is disposed at right angles thereto v and is connected thereto by an elbow 15.
Within the neck 14, means, indicated at 16, are provided for supporting a plurality of screens 17,'the purpose. of which will hereinafter appear.-
The opposite end of the casing 11 communicates wlth a, reduced outlet 18; having a check valve 19 disposed therein. The exterior wall of the elbow is provided with a J packing gland 20' and forms a support for one end ofa gear casing21, the adjacent'end wall 22 of which is spaced from the packing gland to permit ready access thereto. Extending'into the opposite end wall 23'of the gear'casing is an'mput shaft 24, at present shaft 25 of a motor 26which is shown as directly connected to the, armature the base. a I I Within the casing, this-shaft is mounted in bearings 27' supported from the walls of mounted upon the casing and has securedthereto a series of gears 28, 29 and 30 of different sizes. The
gear casing is provided with a second, set of bearings-31, 32 and 33receiving respectively a solid shaft 34 and hollow shafts 35 and 36. These shafts have secured thereto gears37, 38 and 39 meshing with the gears 28, 29 and 30. It Will be noted that theseshafts will be driven at different speeds, the shaft 34 rotating at the highest speed. The shafts 34, 35
and 36 extend through the packing gland 20 into'the casing 11v and are disposed axially with relation thereto.
Within the casing 11. are arranged longi- 'tudinally spaced bearings 40, 41 and 42 receivmg respectively the shafts 36, 35 and 34,
the bearing'40, being disposed most nearly adjacent the stuffing box 20. These bearings are preferably supported from the lower wall of the casing by vertical standards 43 and are braced to the side walls thereof by horizontally extendingarms 44. The caps 45 of these hearings are accessible and removable comprise fan-like blades 51, the peripheries of which are connected by an annular rim 52, which operates in close proximity to the wall of the casing. The space provided in reduc ing the diameters of the casing, as at 46 and 47, is preferably employed in the. formation ofvwater jackets 53.
Each of the shafts 35' and 36 within the casing and at its bearing 41'is packed to the shaft contained therein, preferably by 36 and 35.
