hll'lh' METHOD or MAKING HANGERS.
Application filed November 3, 1923. Serial No. 672,475.
My invention is concerned with hanger inserts adapted to be placed in concrete floors, etc., of the character shown in the patent to Hall, No. 1,018,490, but which are constructed from malleable tubing by a simplemethod, so that they can be manufactured in quantities much more cheaply than the casting shown in the aforesaid patent.
To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which,
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a form with concrete poured thereon and with the insert shown in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a View of the insert detached, in side elevation, as seen from the right or left of Fig. 1, but on a larger scale;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on line 33 of Fig. 2, with the attaching screw Fig. i is a top plan view of the same.
In carrying out my invention, 1 cut off from malleable tubing of the proper size and thickness sections of the length desired, which sections are of substantially the same length as the finished insert. These sections may be sheared or out off as preferred, and their diameter throughout their length is then represented by that portion a, of the finished hanger.
I then expand, preferably by the use of dies, one end and a major portion of the body thereof so that, when this first step is completed, said expanded portion will have the diameter of the portion Z) of the completed hanger, and the continuation thereof is indicated by the dotted lines o in Fig. 3. If it is desired slightly to flare the lower end as indicated at (Z, this can be done at the same time and as part of the expanding step. 7 i
I then internally thread the unexpanded portion, as indicated at e, to co-operate with the threaded head 7 of the wood screw 9, which is set in the form board it before the concrete is poured, and also with whatever threaded rod or hanger may be placed thereon after the concrete has set and the board h and screw f are removed. 7
Finally, to close the upper end to prevent the entry of the concrete when it is poured,- and also to furnish additional anchorage,
l: flatten the end of the tube, preferably in i: a press, and preferably enough to furnish the portion is having the parallel faces, which portion is inthecompleted insert connected with the portion Z) by the portion Z which expands upwardly in one plane, and contracted upwardly in a plane at right angles thereto, as would naturally result from the pressure applied to the end to close it as described. v
it will be obvious that the resulting hanger insert has all the desirable features of the insert of tie aforesaid Hall Patent No.
1,018,490, with the additional advantage of in the-interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art. I
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. The method of making a hanger from a section of malleable tubing, which consists in (1) internally expanding one end and a majorport-ion of the body thereof; (2) cutting an internal thread on the unexpanded portion; and (3) flattening the outer portion only of the expanded end to close it.
2. The method of making a hanger from a section of malleable tubing, which consists in internally expanding one end and a major portion of the body thereof; (2) cutting an internal thread on the unexpanded portion; (3) flattening the outer portion only of the expanded end to close it; and (4) flaring the threaded end.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of October, 1923.
