CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BRASSIERE AND sunning; GARMENT.
Application filed September 12, 1924. Serial No. 737,253.
The objects of this invention are to provide an improved brassiere or similar garment having at its top circumferentially elastic means for holding the garment in place on the wearer, instead of shoulder straps; to provide such elasticmeans which can be adjusted angularly with respect to the front portion of the garment, so as to fit the top of the same close to the wearer; to utilize for. this purpose an elastic band at the back of the top of the garment, "separate from the main back portion of the garment; to thus enable the top of the garment to be securely held in place on thewearer, without shoulder straps,
and yet not cut into or indent the flesh so as to show a ridge above the-garment, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out by the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a view of a brassiere containing my improvements, showing the same in place upon a wearer;
Figure 2 is a front view of the brassiere removed;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional viewthrough the front and back showing the conformation of the garment tothe wearer and a disposition of the elastic band at the top of the main back portion;
Figure 4 is a back view of the brassiere in position upon a wearer with the elastic band sections inclined downwardly as is some times desirable to hold the top-of the front portion of the brassiere close to the wearer;
Figure 5 is a detail View of the brassiere removed and with the main back portion broken away to show more clearly the inclined position of elastic band sections indicated in Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a detail view corresponding to Figure 5 and showing the elastic band parallel to the upper edge of the main back portion which is the position shown in Figures 1 and 3;
Figure-7 is a'view of the brassiere upon a I wearer with the elastic band horizontal, as
in Figures 1, 3 and 6;
Figure 8 is a view of the back portion of the brassiere from the outside, and
Figure 9 is an inside view of one section of said back portion, partly broken away to show certain stiffening members.
In the specific embodiment of the inventail features are immaterial to the present in-,
vention and the said front portion 1 may be of any ordinary and well-known construction.
To the opposite ends of said front portion 1 is connected a main back portion which is preferably made in two sections 8, 9 adapted to be detachably joined together at the wear ers back by any suitable means, such as hooks 10 and cooperating eyes on the other section. This back portion may be of any ordinary and well-known construction, but it is shown as not extending clear to the top of'the ends of the front portion 1, and at the bottom of the garment elastic gores 11, 12 are shown between the front portion and back portion to enable the lower edge of the-garment to flare slightly and conform more perfectly to the figure of the wearer. Stifl'eners may be employed wherever desired, as shown at 13 and 14, and I have shown the seam 6 of the front portion 1 of the garment extended throughout the back portion, as indicated by reference numeral 15. However, it will be understood that all these detail features are immaterial to ,the present invention and the said back portion 8, 9 may beof any ordinary and well-known construction.
In carrying outmy invention, I connect the upper parts of the opposite ends of the front portion 1 by an elastic band adapted to extend around the body of the wearer, preferably under slight tension, and adapted to be swung up or down'to vary its angular relation to the said front portion when upon the wearer. That is to say, said elastic band may extend horizontally around the wearer, or substantially so, as shown in Figures 6 and 7 or it may be depressed at the middle of the Wearers back so as to draw in a more downward direction, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. Preferably, said elasticband is made in sections 16, 17 attached to the opposite ends of I ll) the front portion 1 and adapted to be detachablyconnected at their meetin ends by any suitable means, such as the hoo s 18 and eyes 19. It will be noted that the elastic band formed by the sections 16, 17 may lie above the main back portion formed by the sections 8 and 9, or said sections 16, 17 may incline downwardly toward each other, according as the shape of the front portion of the garment or the figure of the wearer, 01' any other cause, makes desirable in order to produce the best and closest fit of the upper portion of the garment. In this way such a fit of the upper portion of the garment is secured as suffices to support the garment upon the wearer and obviate the use of shoulder straps. Furthermore, While the elastic band is at its points of connection to. the front portion comparativefly narrow with respect to the back portion it is made wide enough so that it will draw upon a sufiicient part of the top of the front portion 1 to ensure that neither the upper edge of the frontportion nor said band will cut into the flesh of the wearer, but the garment will lie smoothly in place upon the wearer without the formation of any Visible ridge at its edge.
As already indicated, the construction and manufacture of my invention may be carried out with many modifications, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I do not wish to be understood as restricting myself except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. The combination in a brassiere or the llke having a fabrlc front portion and a fabric back portion for holding the garment around the wearer, of an elastic band connected at the sides of the wearer to the ends of the upper marginal part of the front por-' around the back of the wearer, said elastic band being at its points of connection to the front portion comparatively narrow with respect to the back portion andfree to be swung upon its points of connection to the front portion up and down with respect to the said back portion and draw said marginal part of the front ortion close to the wearer independently o 'the rest of the garment.
2. The combination in a brassiere or the like having a fabric front portion and a fabric back portion for holding the garment around the wearer, said front portion having its upper marginal part extending upward beyond said back portion and terminating in ends at the sides of the wearer, of an elastic band connecting said ends and adapted to extend around the back of the wearer, said elastic band being at its points of-connec tion to the front portion comparatively narrow with respect to the back portion and free to be swung upon its points of connection to the front portion up and down with respect to the said back portion and draw said marginal part of the front portion close to the wearer independently of the rest of the garment.
3. The combination in a brassiere or the like having a fabric front portion and a fab ric back portion for holding the garment around the'wearer, said front portion having its upper edge bowed upwardly at the middle,
of an elastic band connected at the sides of the wearer to the ends of the upper marginal part of the front portion of the garment and adapted toextend around the back of the wearer, said elastic band being free to be swung upon its points of connection to the front portion up and down with respect to the back portion and lie substantially in the same plane transverse to the wearer with the said upper edge of the front portion independent of the upper edge of said back portion.
