DEVICE FOR APPLYING STRIPS.

This invention relates to a device for apply ing a strip of thin, fiexible material such as paper, for example, to another sheet of materia] which has an adherent surface or in which provision is made for the two to stick together. It relates more'particularly to a device for applying a thin, narrow strip of paper longitudinally along a roofing sheet for the purpose of facilitating the formation of a selvage edge on .the roofing sheet and by this invention the paper strip is automatically applied along the desired line at a fixed distance from the edge of the roofing sheet.
In the manufacture of sheets of roofing mai ferial it is customary to form a sheet of fibrous material or a so-called felt base and saturate the same with waterproofing material such as tar, for example, and to coat the same on` one or both sides with a layer or layers of plastic, bituminous material such as asphalt, for example, and then to apply a layer of Weanresisting material such as crushed stone, slate, grit or the like. It is sometimes desirable to leave lines or stripes along the roofing sheet free from the wear-resisting material and for this purpose a narrow strip of paper is sometimes applied longitudinally of the roofing sheet after the coating of plastic material has been applied and before the wearresisting material is sprinkled thereon, thus producing lines or stripes along which the crushed stone, etc., will not cling or be stuck. Heretof'ore difficulties have arisen in applying such strips of paper because the roofing sheets will weave or move from side to side slightly as they are being drawn along thus causing the paper strip to be applied in somewhat sinuous or wavy lines.
By the present invention a strip of paper may be applied with certainty along the desired line longitudinally of the roofing strip and the roll ofpaper from which the strip is fed is automatically moved from side to side with the roofing sheet so that a fixed relation of the same to the roofing sheet will be maintained at all times.
The invention will be understood from the e description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a. side elevational view of the device; and
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
In the drawings reference character 1 designates a stationary bar which may be held in a fixed position by means of the standards v 2 resting upon a base 3. A rights 4 are fixed to the bar 1 forwardly vided with notches 6. A hollow U-shaped pipe 8 is suspended'from the arms 5 by means of the vflexible ropes or cords 9 so as to be swingableor movable from side to side.V This plpe 8'is provided' at one end with a exible tube 10 for leading steam thereto and at 'the other end with an outlet valve 11. Guide arms 12 are mounted upon pipe 8 and are adjustable therealong by means of the set screws 13.
Brackets or arms 15 extend downwardly and forwardly from the bar 1 and are rigidly attached theretol These brackets 15 have bearings 16 in which a shaft 17 is mounted substantiallyparallel to. sheet 19. This shaft 17 carries a roll of paper 18 which is disposed between the guide arms 12 which are adiusted to be in close proximity to the sides of the roll 18 and the roll 18 is free to he moved axially along the shaft 17. v
The operation is as follows After the sheet 19 of roofing material has been saturated with waterproofing material, it is drawn between the coating rolls 20 and passes by means not shown, in the direction of the arrow under the paper roll. 18 before the layer of wear-resisting material is sprinkled thereon. If the roofing sheet 19 moves slightly in a sidewise direction, its edge will, by a contact with the U-shaped pipe 8 move this pipe correspondingly which, in turn, will, through the ide arms 12, move the roll 18 simultaneous y onthe supporting means or shaft 17 so as to maintain the roll 18 at a fixed plurality of upand terminate in projecting arms y5 that are proposition with respect to the edge of the roofing sheet 19. The distance between the arms of the U-shaped pipe 8 will be made equal to the width of the sheet 19 to which the strip of paper is to be applied. Steam will be a'dmitted through the flexible connection 10 to the pipe 8 for the pun-pose of keeping the same hot and preventing it from sticking to the edges of the waterproofed sheet 19 and also preventing the accumulation of waterproofi moving sheet of material, standards, brackshaped ets supported by said standards and adapted to support a roll of strip material upon an axis substantially parallel to said sheet' and a U-shaped 'member supported by other brackets upon said standards and cooperative with both the roll and the sheet for applying the strip in a predeterminedposition on the sheet.
2. In a device for ap lying a stri to a moving sheet of materia standards, rackets supported by said standardsand adapted to support a -roll of strip material upon an axis substantially parallel to said sheet, said standards and said roll supporting brackets being so arranged as to receive the moving sheet between the standards and underneath and adjacent to the roll, and an inverted U- member supported by other brackets upon said standards and cooperative with both the roll and the sheet for applying the strip in a predetermined position on the sheet. y
3. In a device of the classdescribed, standards, a cross bar upon saidstandards, roll supporting brackets `upon said bar, an inverted U-shaped web guiding member movably supported and straddling said first named brackets in cooperative relation therewith, said U-shaped member having depending therefrom a pair of adjustableflaterally engaging roll guide members.

In a device of the class described, in combination standards mounted on either side of the path of a traveling web of roofing-sheet, a shaft for holdingl a roll of paper supported thereby, depending arms arranged to contact with the longitudinal edges of the moving sheet and supported to swing with 'the movement of the sheet from side to side, and a guide device controlled by the swinging of said arms and moving from side to side therewith, said guide device being arranged to move the roll of paper on said shaft similarly Jfrom side to side to insure its application in a straight line to the rooting-sheet.
5. In adevice of the class described, in combination standards mounted on either side of the path lof a traveling web of roofing-sheet, a shaft for holding a rolliof paper supported thereby, depending arms arranged to contact with the longitudinal edges of the moving sheet and supported to swmg with the movement of the sheet from side to side, a'v guide device controlled by the' swinging of said arms and moving from side to side therewith, said guide device being arranged to move the roll ofv paper onsaid shaft similarly from side to side .to insure its application in a straight line to the rootingsheet, and means for heating the portion of said depending arms in contact with the lon- 'tudinal edges of the moving sheet. v 6. In a device for applying a strip to a Imoving sheet of material, means :for supporting a roll of strip material adjacent tosaid moving sheet, depending arms arranged to contact with the longitudinal edges of the moving sheet and sup orted to move from side to side with the sheet, and a. guide device controlled by the movement of said arms and moving from side to sidetherewith, said guide device being arranged to move the roll of strip material from Side to side with said moving sheet.
7. In a device for applying a st-rip to a moving sheet of material,- means arranged to contact with said moving sheet and. supported to move laterally in both directions ofthe path ofmovement of said sheet by lateral movement of said sheet, and means for supporting a roll of strip material adjacent to said moving sheet controlled by said lateral moving means to correspondingly nieve said roll of strip material.
