PRINTING MACHINE.
The invention relates to an improvement in machines for printing. It is especially applicable to machines for printing or enibossing on glass, china, porcelain, enamelled goods or other frangible articles but it is not limited to machines for printing on articles of that character. It relates especially to machines in which the printing and embossing member is reciprocable and has a printing surface on which the character, marking or design is imprinted or embossed by a die in such manner that the printing surface is adapted to imprint or emboss said design on the work, the die and the work -holder being alternately brought into alinev ment with the printing member.

The present invention comprises a machine having a' double headed reversible printing member mounted betweena die and a work holder. v j
One object of the present invention is to provide means for actuating the Work sup-v port to cause the work to engage one printing member and move both printing members as a unit until the other printing member engages the die. Another object is to provide means for reversing the positions of the printing members after each complete stroke.
The invention will be fully understood from the followng description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in-the claims at the close of this specification.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view, similar to View I Fig. 1, showing one printing member in contact with the work and the'other printing member in Contact with the inkingdie. Referring to the drawings there is shown at 10 a frame or casting to hold the working parts. Mounted in guide ways in the frame is a slidable carrier 11 onwhich is mounted a die 12 having formed thereon the design to be printed or embossed on the work. Said die carrier. is slidable in said guideways'to bring the die into and out of alinement with the printing member. Secured to the underside of said die carrier is a rack 13 which engages a gear 14 mounted on a shaft 15 which maybe actuated in any suitable manner to reciprocate thesaid slide back and forth to move the dieinto and out of operative position with relation to the printing member. At 16 is shown an inking roll which will be engaged by the'die 12 during its backward movement and again during its forward movement. At 17 is shown a wiper to remove the surplus ink from the die.
A double headed carrier G for the printing members is provided. with trunnions 18 journalled in boxes 19, 19 which arevertically slidable on guide rods .20, 20 so that said carrier may be vertically reciprocated co-axially with the die 12 when 1 said die 12 is in operative position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said carrier has two oppositely disposed heads 21, 22 each carrying a printing member 5 which is preferablya pad adapted to take up ink from the die 12 at one stroke and at another stroke to transfer the impression to the work. 1

In a printing machine, a die, two printing members, a holder on which said printing members are mounted facing in opposite directions and a work holder, said die, printing members and work holder beingadapted .to be brought into alinement with each other, and means for moving said work holder to move the work into engagement with one of the printing members and to continue the movement to move the other printing memher into engagement with the die, said holder for the printing members being rotatable to shift the respective positions of the printing members with relation to the die and the work.

In a printing machine, a die, a work holder at some distance below the die, two printing members mounted on a holder rotatable on a horizontal axis intermediate the die and the work holder, said printing members facing in opposite directions, means for rotating said holder for the printing members so as to bring one printing member in posi-' tion to face the die and the other printing member in position to face the work, and whereby said printing members may be reversed in position relative to the die and work, and means for moving the work sup port so as to cause'the work thereon to engage the lower printing member'to receive the imprint and move the holder for the printing members upward to bring the other printing member into engagement with the die.

In a printing press, a. die, a reciprocable work holder, a rotatable member 011 which are mounted two oppositely disposed printing members, a reciprocable carrier for said mount, means for moving said work holder to bring the work thereon into engagement with one of the printing members and to thereby more the said carrier and the printing members to cause the other printing member to engage the die.

In a printing press, a die and a work holder spaced apart from each other, the work holder being reciprocable toward and from the die, a rotatable mount forprinting members intermediate'the die and thework holder, printing members mounted on opposite sides of said printing member holder whereby one of the printing members is adapted toface the work holder while the other printing member faces the die, a shaft on which said printingmembers are mount-- ed, sli-dable bearings for said shaft whereby said printing member holder is movable toward and from the die, means whereby said work holder may be moved into engagement with one of the printing members and on the same stroke to thereby move the other printing member into engagement with the die,
said printing member holder being adapted to be turned on its axis after a printing operation to reverse the positions of the two printing members so that at the next operation the printing member which has just performed the printing upo-n'thework will face the die and the printing member which has just been in contact with the die will face the work.
12.
