PACKAGE.
Application filed October 27, 1927. Serial N0. 229,182.
This invention relates to packages for plates and, while not limited thereto, relates more particularly to shipping skids and packages for light gageplates, such as tin plate,
members, adjacent their ends.
and has for its object the provision of a light, durable and cheap skid and packagewhich is particularly adapted for mechanical loading and handling.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan, partly broken away, of a package of tin plate formed on the skid of this invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevation thereof.
Figures 4 and 5 are detail views of the tie wire supporting clips.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the rectangular supporting members which are preferably formed of standard wood sections. The supporting members 2 are all of the same crosssection and length and are spaced substantially an equal distance apart.
Angle-shaped side members 3 are secured to the upper or top faces of the supporting The angleshaped side members are arranged with one flange parallel with the top faces of the sup porting members 2 and with their other flange projecting upwardly at right angles to the top face of the supporting members, so as to prevent the plates piled on the skid from movingsidewise off of the skid. The side members 3 are preferably secured to the supporting members by nails, screws or the like, as at 4, so as to form a rigid unit or skid.
In practice, skids formed as above ,de-
' scribed are arranged on the floor and the plates 5 are piled thereon until the desired number are assembled. Experience has. shown that eleven base boxes or one thousand one hundred and twenty plates may be readily piled on a single skid.
After the plates are piled on a skid, angleshaped clips 6 are mounted along the upper side edges of the pile of plates with one flangeoverlying the top face of the pile and the other flange overlying the side face of the pile. The clips 6 are provided with-spaced upstanding ribs 7 for a purpose to be described;
The clips 6 are located in line with the spaces between the supporting members 2 and tie wires 8 are passed over the pile of plates clips 6 prevent the tie wires from r the plates and the ribs ends secured together, as at 9. so as to bind the pile of plates and the skid together, forming a suitable package for ship-ping. The damaging from slipping ofl of the clips.
After the platesand skid have been tied together, forming a,completed package, the entire package is'adapted to be handled mechanically by a. lift tractor or other device 7 prevent the tie wires having a-forked or pronged lifting member which may be inserted under the package between the supporting members 2 to lift the package clear of the floor.
WVhile I have shown and described one spebific embodiment of my invention it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as defined -in the appended claim. p
I claimi A package of tin plate or the like comprising a base composed of a plurality of spaced supporting members arranged in parallel re lation with each other, angle members extending along the upper faces of all of said supporting members adjacent each end thereof, said angle members being arranged with one flange parallel with the upper faces of saidsupporting members and with the other flange extending upwardly at right angles to the top faces of said supporting members, said angle members and said supporting members being rigidly secured together. a pile of plates supported on said supporting members and angles, angle-shaped clips mounted in spaced relation along the upper side edges of said pile of plates so as to have one flange overlying the top face of Sfild plates and the other flange overlying the sid e face of said pile of plates, tie wires ext-ending over said pile of plates and'sa-id angleshaped clips and under said base to secure said base and pile of plates together, and ribs on said clips to prevent said wires slipping off of said clips.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. I
