' J. w. MEIKLEJOHN TROUSER SUPPORTING DEVICE Filed Sept. 22, 1927 Patented Dec. 25, 1928.
UNITED STATES JOHN W MEIKLEJOHN, 0F PAWTUCKET, RHOIDE ISLAND.
TROUSER SUPPOR-TING DEVICE.
Application filed September This invention'relates to certain new and useful improvements in trousers supporting device, and the primary object thereof is to provide an improved device for enabling use of suspenders under the shirt as distin guished from over the shirt, in supporting the trousers.
The invention further aims to provide a device of this type which is of simple and economical construction, which can be easily and quickly applied to and removed from the trousers and which is reliably and effectively secured to the trousers.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sideelevation of one form of the invention applied to the inside of trousers, the latter shown in fragment;
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1 and Figure 8 and Figure 4 are side elevations of modified forms of the invention.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a strip of material 1, which may be formed of celluloid, is provided and which has a forked upper end 2 to receive the fastener of the trouser button 3,the latter being on the inside of the trousers at the belt line. A fabric loop 1 is secured to the member 1 and is formed to engage over the button 3 thereby to ho] d the upper end of the member 1 in position and with the said upper end of the latter disposed between the button3 and the inner face of the trousers T. A tape 5 secured by stitching G or other suitable fastening means to the lower end of the member 1 at a point between the ends of the tape whereby it will be seen that the lower end 7 of the tape projects below the lower end of the member 1. Suspender engaging button 9 is secured to the upper end of the tape 5 while a buttonhole 8 is formed in the lower projecting end 7 of the tape the butt-onhole 8 being formed to engage a button 10 that is sewed to the trousers beneath. the usual buttons 3 thereof. As is well known, there are buttons 3 which are on opposite sides of the trousers and also at the rear of the trousers so that in use, after the members 1 have been applied to the trousers, the sides and also the back of the shirt are engaged between the parts 1 and 5 so that the latter is on the inside of the shirt. The suspender ends are then attached to the buttons 9. The parts 1 and 5 thus form pockets in which the sides and back of the shirt are in- 22, 1927. Serial No. 221,294.
sorted and held firmly in place, preventing the shirt from working out over the top edge of the trousers.
In Figure 3, a modified form of the inven tion is disclosed in which the member 1 corresponding to the member 1 in Figure 1, is formed of Y-shaped to engage two buttons. The tape 5 is similar to the tape 5 in Figure 1, the only difference being that the member 1 is held at its upper end at two points, as distinguished from the single point anchorage thereof in Figure 1. i
In Figure 4,.the strip 1 is similar to the strip 1 in Figure 1 and which has a short strip 10 stitched thereto at 11.
A. Y-shapcd fabric member 12 is provided which has a buttonhole 13 to engage a button 14- at the upper end of the strip 10 so that the Y-shaped member 12 can be readily removed as may he desired. In this form of the invention, suspender engaging buttons 15 are applied to the upper ends of the arms of the Y-shape'd member 12 so that the suspender is engaged in the usual way at wo spaced points as distinguished from the placement of each of the usual buttonholes of the tabs or suspender ends to the single button 9 of Figures 1, 2 and 3. I
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a trousers supporting device, a flexible strip having a forked upper end to engage a trousers button and the fastener of said button, a fabric loop carried by the strip formed to engage over the button so as to hold the strip in position, and a fabric tape secured between its ends to the strip and having its lower end extending below the strip and formed with a buttonhole to engage a second button on the trousers, said tape having a suspender-engaging button on its upper end. I
2. In a trousers supporter, a Y-shaped member having forked upper ends to engage trousers buttons and their fasteners, and a tape secured between its ends to the member and having a suspender engaging button at its top, the tape having a buttonhole at its lower end to engage a trousers button.
3. In a trousers supporter, a member, means to secure the top of the member to a trousers button,'and a tape secured to the member between its ends, the tape having a Suspender engaging button at its top end and having its bottom end extending below the member and formed with a buttonhole to engage a trousers button thereby to hold the member at its l lower end.
4. In a trousers supporter, a member, means to secure the member at its upper portion to a trousers button, means to secure the lower portion of the member to the trousers, and a tape, secured at its lower end to said member and projecting upwardly therefrom and having its upper end free and provided with a suspender engaging button.
5. In a trousers supporter, a member, means to secure the member to a trousers button, a tape secured between its ends to the member and having a suspender engaging button at its top and having its lower end projecting below the member, and means to attach the said lower end of the tape to the trousers thereby to hold the lower portion of the me1nber in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN W. MEIKLEJOHN.
