Description

Patented Dec. 25, 1928.
UNITED STATES) TI" OEEIC Ef.
GEORGE F. HOPKINS, 0F JACKSON, MICHIGAN, WILLIAMJ'K. SAGENDORPH EXEGUTOR OF SAID' GEORGEF. HOPKINS, DECEASED."
onucx JAWS? Original application filed February 28, 1925, Serial N0.-12,'331;'. Divided andthis application flled I January 21, 1926.
This application is a division of my application Ser. No. 12,331, filed February 28, 1925, where many details appear.
The objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved chuck jaw Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish-the objects of my invention.
by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying a preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of my improved chuck and jaws.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail face elevation view of the chuck, taken from the right of Fig. 1, one of the adjustable jaws being omitted.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional elevation taken on line 3-3 of Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Fig. 4 is a still further enlarged detall transverse sectional view of the jaw structure and sup rt, taken on the irregular plane indicate by section lines 44 of Figs. 2, 3 and 5, showing matters of adjustment of the ways and connections.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on line 55 of Figs. 3 and 4, showing details of the jaw adjusting screw means.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail face view of the divided jaw supportfor carrying the adjustin screw.
in the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar arts throughout the several views.
The numbered parts of the drawing will be considered by their numbers. 1 is the live spindle of a lathe. 2 is the chuck body connected to the lathe spindle by the adapter 3 in the usual way. The chuck shown is pro- Serial No. 82,685;
ad ustablej aw'.- I will desoribe'one complete I jaw structure.
The master aw '8 is :provided with ilnCOII-i necting lug 9-projectingavithin thesrcentralv support or spider for; assisting;- in guidingg saidjaw and providing a connecting lug .for an actuating bell crank orrother means with-.2
in the chuck.
The adjustable detachable-jaw 18 'iszzcare ried by the-support 20- 20: and .isadjuLstable by the-screw19. The support 20 20- is in two a parts. This support is retained in place upon:
the master jaw by apair tof screws 201 and each part has'laterally projectingtransverse:
ribs- 202. engaging in a suitable transverse seat-88. 2. Each part 20' 20; is longi'tud-inal'ly grooved-at 203 to engage rib 89on themaster j aw-.see Figs; 4- and:6. These-parts are cessed to receive the adjusting screw 19 which is provided with ournals 191 inpart 20 and journals 192 in part 20, and disposed in recess 193 in the said support 20 20. Because these parts are made separable, it facilitates assembling, the screw and journals being made integral. The adjusting screw is controlled by a wrench engaging the square proj ecting end 194;.
The adjustable jaw' 18 slidably engages this support, a suitable way 181 being provided at one side with threads for engaging the screw 19. A gib 182 is clamped to the opposite side by screw studs 183 provided with screw nuts 184 for clamping and looking the jaw in place upon the support 20 20 after adjustment by the screw 19see particularly Fig. 4c- From this it will be seen that by manipulation of the adjusting screw 19 the jaws can be each definitely adjusted and set to any position desired, and can then be clamped securely, as indicated.
The master jaw 8 (see Fig. 4:) is provided with laterally projecting slide ribs 82 with beveled outer sides 83 engaging in and extending into suitable ways between the face plate and the spider. These are provided with flat inner surfaces and beveled outer surfaces. Beveled gibs 84 with. beveled faces 85 cooperate with the same and are secured adjustably in position by hollow headed pointed screws 86 through the face plate 'enwhich enables the taking up of wear at this point and insuring a very close fit between the parts, permitting of very accurate adjustment and secure clamping of the parts.
The master jaw 8 is provided with a proj ecting flange 87 which extends laterally over the face plate 5 of the chuck (see particularly Fig. 4c) and serves as a cover for the opening. The inner portion of the flange e2;- tends over the outer surface of the master center bushing 16 (see Figs. 2 and 3) and makes a complete cover for the radial opening during the radial movement of the jaws during their actuation.
I have described and shown in detail the adjustable jaws for the chuck. Universal jaws can be made use of and can be secured to the master jaws by the screws 201. When such jaws are made use of, the matter of adjustment and the like are not provided for. As these jaws are the usual jaws without any adjustment, I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a aw structure, the combination of a master jaw, an adjustable aw having screw thread engaging means carried thereby, a aw support divided transversely into two parts fitting in suitable seats on the face of the master jaw, cross countersunk screws in said parts for retaining the same in place on the master jaw, and a recess in each of the meeting portions of said parts of said support and having an adjusting means in said recess comprising a screw with end journals in said bearings.
2. In a jaw structure, the combination of the master jaw, an adjustable jaw with ways therein suitably threaded for an adjusting screw, a divided support with means for securing it to said master jaw suitably recessed for the adjusting screw and each part having a journal bearing hole at its outer end, an adjusting screw disposed within the recess and engaging the threads of the adjustable jaw with journal pin projections at each end disposed in said bearings, and suitable means for clamping the adjustable jaw in place, coacting as specified.
3. In a jaw structure, the combination of the master jaw, an adjustable jaw with ways therein suitably threaded for an adjusting screw, a divided support with means for securing it to said master aw suitably recessed for the 4 adjusting screw, and an adjusting screw disposed within and engaged and retained by the recess and engaging the threads of the adjustable jaw, coacting as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
v GEORGE F. HOPKINS.
