Description

L. HOOCK REEL Filed Feb. 24. 1928 [[ZZ/f Ava/f Patented Dec. 25, 1928.
UNITED STATES LIItZZIE-HOOGIK, or coLonY, OKL HOMA.)
REEL. Z
. Application filed February 24, 1928. Serial No. 256,513.
This invention relates to reels and more particularly to such reels as are used in connection with clothes lines and the like.
The usual type of clothes line is inconvenient and impracticable in that it is necessary to pull upon the line itself in order to shift the line from time to time for the purpose of afiixing thereto the clothing to be dried. Also, with the old type of line, the process of hanging out clothes is laborious and involves an unnecessary amount of time spent in adjusting the line to the various positions.
An object of this invention is to provide a reel which will enable the shifting of the line from one position to another without necessitating the grasping of theline itself by the operator and which will save a great deal of labor and time in the process of hanging out clothing.
A further object is to provide a reel and clothes line device which may be easily and cheaply made so that it may be sold at a reasonably low price.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanyin drawing, constituting a material part 0 this disclosure, and in which Fi ure 1 is a perspective view showing one orm of the device mounted on a wall.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view showing details of the preferred form of reel.
Figure 3 is a front view of the reel when mounted for use.
Figure 4 is a top view of a nection used with the reel.
Figure 5 is a side view of the structure shown in Figure 4.
In the drawing, the reeling device is pulley and conshown to comprise a plate 7 which may be attached to a wall, and upon the plate 7 are mounted a plurality of arms 6, four being shown in the drawings, which support the plate 22, the latter being centrally apertured to accommodate a shaft 9 having an en-v larged portion 11, upon which a pulley 14 is non-rotatably mounted.
Also mounted on the plate 7 is a casing 8, in which a further enlarged portion 10 of the shaft 9 is journalled, ball bearings 12 being provided to facilitate the operation of the device. The enlarged portion 10 is greater in diameter than the aperture in the casing 8, through which the shaft passes, so that the casing will prevent the removal of the shaft.
The outer end of the shaft 9 is rectangular in cross-section, to accommodate a crank 16, provided with a knob 17 to operate the device.
A line 15 passes twice around and over the pulley 14c and over a second pulley 18 remotely positioned. The pulley 18 is rotatably mounted in the fork 19, the latter being pivotally mounted at 20 on the bracket 21, in order to prevent binding.
In Figure 1, the device is shown mounted ready for use, and the door or other closure 30 is provided with notches 31 to accommodate the line15.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have provided a desirable device for use with clothes lines. It is not necessary for the operator to grasp the line itself from time to time to hang out the several pieces of clothing. All that need be done is to rotate the shaft 9. The device is simply made and may be readily installed by unskilled persons.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously embodiments may be constructed, including many modifications,
without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reel for clothes lines comprising a plate adapted to be fixed to a wall, a plu rality of arms mounted on said plate and supporting a second plate spaced from the first plate, a casing mounted on said first plate, a shaft journalled in the casing and the second plate, a pulley non-rotatably mounted on said shaft, and a crank fixed to the outer end of the shaft.
2. In a clothes line device, a reel comprising a plate having a plurality of arms mounted thereon, a second plate spaced from the first plate and supported by said arms, a shaft having one end journalled in the second plate, means on said first plate to support the other end of the shaft, a pulley nonrotatably mounted on the shaft, and means for rotating the shaft.
3. In a clothes line device, a reel comprising a plate having a plurality of arms fixed 5 thereto, a second plate spaced from the first plate and supported by said arms, a casing mounted on the first plate, a shaft journalled in the second plate and in said casing, a pulley non-rotatably mounted on said shaft, said shaft having an enlarged portion to l prevent its Withdrawal from the casing, and means for rotating said shaft.
In Witness whereof I have affixed my signature.
LIZZIE HOOGK.
