This invention relates to improvements in gas venting devices for use in connection with casks, barrels, and the like, wherein it is desired to automatically vent accumula' l gases within the container without porn ting the introduction of air.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision or" a vent of this char acter which automatically operates under a predetermined pressure from within the container to permit the escape of contained gases, the vent serving underall normal conditions to prevent the admission of air to the container.
The invention is illustrated. in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The improved vent comprises the usual bung or stopper 1 adapted for removable insertion in the usual bung opening 2 of the container 3. This bung or stopper may be of any material or size, it being of course understood that if the cash is designed to contain acids or the like, the stopper will be of a material which will not be affected by such acid. j

At a point above the valve, the tube 4 is provided with radially projecting diametrically opposed arms 10 forming an upper limit for a disk head 11 on the upper end of a spring 12 coiled Withinthe tube and hearing at its lower end upon the disk valve 8.
Obviously, the tension or" the spring will serve to hold the valve closed, thereby scaling the outlet 6 from the container, but upon generation of gases within the container to any degree for which the spring may be set, the pressure of such gases will overcome the tension ofthe spring and force the valve upwardly to permit the gases to escape through the openings 9 in the valve around the projections 7. i
It is intended that the valve shall ail ord a gas escape opening through the openings 9 around the projections and hence the valve will not leave the projections in operation The position of the valve thus assured under all conditions.
A plug 13 is arranged for threaded cooperation with the interior. of the tube, such thread having a conical terminal 14 which, when the plug is seated, Will exert additional pressure upon the spring to insure the seal ing of the valve undereven abnormal pressures. This plug also operates to close the upper end of the tube 4-, so that the possibility oi accidental admission of air under any jarring conditions to which the container may be subjected will be prevented.
What I claim to be new is:
The combination with a cash, having a hung hole, of a stopper for the bung hole, said stopper having a central chamber and a central aperture in the bottom of the chamber, a tube fitting in the chamber, said tube having a bottom formed with an opening which 5' rs with the aperture in the stopper. the bottom of the tube surrounding the opening therei.
