-MECHANISM FOR ATTACHING WIRE HANDLES IO BASKETS.
Application filed January 14, 1927. Sam No. l 61, 103.
My invention relates to a mechanism for attaching wire handles to baskets, with more particular reference to the type of handle that is aflixed to the conventional form of grape basket.
A principal object of the invention is to afford a simple mechanism, of comparatively I few parts, and which can be operated in an accurate and reliable fashion. 7
ii) Another purpose of the improvement is to provide means that will enable an operator torapidly apply handles to baskets, in such a way as to insure their being properly positioned and rigidly, secured.
* To theseand other ends, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts that will appear clearly from the followingdescription whenrea-d ,in conjunc tion with, the accompanying drawings, the
" novel features being pointed outin the claims following the specification. .v I 1 In the drawings; a m a I Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine including a preferred embodiment of the invention; I Y

Figure 3 is a plan view showing a basket and handle in position, preparatory to scour-.

a Figure 6 is ladetailed sectional view on the-line 6-6, of Figure 5; x
Figure is a side elevation of a basket, partially broken away, showing aflixed thereto a handle of the type for which the present mechanism is "designed; a a Y 3 Figure 8 is an edg'eelevation of a wire handle, partially broken away, and showing the position of the attachingdevice or prong-before it is secured to the basket, and, v i Figure 9 isxa sideview of the same.
The inven tion is susceptible of diiferent" possibleapplications, and herein shown as designed for, affixing-to grape baskets and the like a wire handle of the general type illus trated in Figures 7 to 9 inclusive, and includ a ing a loop portion 1 that isengageable on I the inside of the basket and an attaching device or prong .2 that is engageable on the outside of the basket a-nd'is forced inwardly until itpierces the basket and occupies a position between the two sides of the loopr l.
The wire handle shown forms no part of my 60 invention, but is of old form and is illus trated hereto show the application ot thev mechanism of this invention as designedto accommodate a-handle of this tharacter;
In addition to the portionsl and 2jjust referred to, the handle further includes shoulders 3, sides 4 and a top portion 5, as illustrated .in Figures 3 to 5 inclusive. The mechanism disclosed includes a table or. hanthe supporting means 6 that is provided with positioning members 7 preferably-in the form of stops of the shape illustrated and fixed at the front edge of the table 6 to engage exteriorly of thesides 4 of the handle,- and retain the latter in proper relationship tothe basket;
,Thetable or handle support 6' is mounted uponor forms part of a based whichmay besuitably arranged on a supporting structure 9 by means'of lugs or brackets 10, or the base 8 be otherwise mounted to suit the convenience of the operator. V
.llcdesignates a basket support, preferably curved as shown to conform'to the inside of one end :of the basket and hold it in position as shown in Figure 1.7 V The basket support 11 is mounted upon brackets 12 suitablyat tached to the base 8.
Thepositioning stops 7 are located adjacentto the forward edge of the tablet and arranged in front of said forward edge, and; adjacent thereto isa handle engaging meinher or block 13; mountedon a pin 14: and
heldin place by screws 15. Theblock 13 is v cally and provided: with metal wear plates 16 againstwhich th'e prongs 2 of, the wireioo handle: engage astheyf are vforced inwardly through the lbasketg The block 13 {occupies aposition inwardly of'the handle and opposite to" the attaching devices and also inside the basket 17, which. is locatedon the aforesaid support 11 with its side walls located between the ends of the block 13 and the movable jaws that will be described presently. 18 are positioning guides which serve to properly locatethe basket as it is inserted on the support 11, inward movement of the top of the asket being limited by its engagement with the front edge of the table 6.
19 desi nate the jaws which serve to move the attac ing devices into engagement with the basket, said jaws being provided with convex operative faces having grooves 20 therein to cooperate with the portion 2 of the wire handle. llach jaw 19 is pivoted at 21 and includes a rearwardly extending portion 22 while 23 are links pivotally connecting the extensions 22 of the jaws to a reciprocating slide 24, the latter being movable in a slot 25 in the table. 26 is an operating lever having a handle 2'? and connected to the slide 24 by a slot 28 and pin 29, so that by moving the lever first in one direction and then in the other, the aws 19 are causedto simultaneously move from the osition shown in Figure 3 to that shown in igure 4 and back again.
In the operation of the machine, the mechanism is initially in the position shown in Fi ure 3 when the o erator inserts a handle, an thereupon a basket, positioning both as shown in said Figure 3. Thereupon handle 27 and lever 26 are moved to the position Shown in Figure 4, causing the jaws to engage the attaching prongs 2 and move them inwardly through the side walls of the basket and against the block 13, as shown in Figure 5, thereb firmly afiixin the handle to the basket. "ihe lever 26 is 51811 returned to the initial position shown in Fi ure 3 and the basket removed with the ban e ailixed thereto. The parts are now ready for a repetition of the operation just described.
While the invention has been (disclosed with reference more or less to a particular structure, it is not limited to the details or arrangements or particular sequence of 0perat'ions herein disclosed, and this application is intended to cover any modifications or dethe handle, jaws movable toward the handle enga ing member to force the handleattachin evices through the basket, and means for eflcting simultaneous movement of the jaws.
2. A machine for attaching a wirehandle to a basket comprising a handle supporting table, ositioni devices on the table engageab e exterior y of a handle, a block loosely mounted at the front of the table and positionable interiorlyof the handle at points opposite to the handle attaching devices, laterally movable jaws operable toward and from the block, and means for eil'ecting simultaneous movement of the jaws.
3. A machine for attaching a wire handle to a basket comprising a basket support, a handle supporting table, ositioning stops on the table for engaging a iiandle exteriorly at opposite points, a block loosely mounted at the front of the table for engaging the handle interiorly at points opposite to its attaching devices, and oppositely movable jaws engageable with the attaching devices to move them toward said block.
1. A machine for attaching a wire handle to a basket comprisin .a basket support, a handle supporting table, ositioning stops on the table for engaging a andle exteriorly at opposite points, a loosel mounted block at the front of the table or engaging the handle intcriorly at points opposite to its attaching devices, laterally movable jaws engageable with the attachin devices to move them toward said block, an means for effecting simultaneous movement of the jaws.
5. A machine for attachin a wire handle to a basket comprising a flat andle supporting means havin positioning stops thereon extending inwardly from its front ed e, a loosely mounted handle engagin bloc located adjacent to the front edge 0 said supporting means for engagement interiorly of the handle at points opposite to its attaching devices, and jaws simu taneously movable to effect entrance of the handle attaching devices through the walls of a basket and against said block.
6. A machine for attachin a wire handle to a basket comprising a flat fiandle su porting means havin positioning stops t ereon extending inwar y from its front edge, a
handle engaging block located adjacent to the front edge of said supportin means for engagement mteriorl of thehandlegladpoints opposite to its attac ing devices,'a jaws simultaneously movable to effect entrance of the handle attaching devices through the walls of a basket and against said block, said block being loosely mounted to permit centering with reference to the handle and movable aws.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
CHARLES H. ALLEN.
