The entire casing 10, the interior of whic is divided into pum mechanismv is preferably attached to two compartments 11 and 12 by a partition 13 the orward or rear end of the crankcase of inwhich are journaled shafts 14 and 15. On an engine ina position so that the end of the the ends of shafts 14 and 15 in compartment camshaft tmay engage the extension 20 of 11 are secured rotor blades 16 and 17 of the shaft 14 and thereby drive the pump. It is to shape shown in Fig. 2 which are so arranged be understood, however, that it may be otheras to pump fuel into and out of compartment 11 when they are rotated, but are provided with a slight clearance from each other and from the sides of the compartment so as to avoid wear from gritty particles which may be in the fuel pump. On the shafts 14 and 15 in compartment 12 are mounted gears 18 and 19 which are positioned to mesh. An exten-l sion 20 is provided on shaft 14 and is designed to be engaged by the end of camshaft of `an internal combustion engine or any other suitable driving means. The compartment 12 is provided with an apertured cover 21 through which shaft 14 extends. Compartment 11 is provided with a cover22. Covers 21 and 22 are secured to casing 10 by means of bolts 23 inserted through suitable apertures in the covers and through the holes 24 in the casing 10. The joints between the covers and casing may be sealed by interposing a lead gasket therebetween. With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and construction of the various shaft.
- In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modification in which the aperture 27 and sleeve 28 are eliminated and a flat spring 40 is substituted by the coil spring 29. The central body portion of the flat spring "'bears against the central portion of the diaphragm`,vvhile its ends 61 and 62 bear against the inside: of the cover 22. Both coil spring 29 adat spring 60 are normally tensioned to hold the diaphragm 26 firmly against the edge of the casing 10, thereby sealing the compartment 11.
In operation, the rotation of the shaft 14 causes a rotation of the rotor 16, and the gear 18 which meshes with gear 19 rotates' shaft 15 and rotor 17. The rotors draw fuel from and opening 40 and force it out through opening 42 and pipe 43 to the carburetor (not shaped and the rim 25 thereof bears against shown). restricted opening is of a size which will insure adequate but inot Yexcessive supply of fuel to the carburetor and will build up a f back pressure in the um chamber. -When a larger quantity of el 1s presented to the restricted opening in pipe 43 than will readily pass therethrough the 'same will back up on the outlet side of thepump, buildup a pressure there suicient to force the dlaphragm 26 outwardly against the tension of spring 29 or spring 60, and permit the excess l fuel to pass back to the inlet side of the pump which will prevent the intake of more fuel through inlet opening 60 until the outlet pipe 43 with its restricted opening'isable to carry away the excess within the pump. The necessity of an outside bypass or areturn line is thus eliminated.
It will be quite ap arent that the amount of fuel pumped by t e pump elements and correspondingly t e pressure in the pumpv chamber will vary in relation to the speed ofV rotation ofthe elements andthat the amount of 'opening of vthe' diaphragm proportionately to permit o greater slippage at higher speeds. v v
