My invention relates to mining apparatus.
lit has its object to provide an improved mining apparatus especially adapted to the transport and unloading and loading. of a mining; machine. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved minmachine truck having; improved and simplified mechanism for maintaining the mining machine in transport position, driv inn; the truck therefrom, supplying current to the mining machine, and loading); and unloading the mining; machine in different relations to the truck. These and other ad- 'antages of my improved construction will, however hereinafter more fully appear.
l Vhile my invention may be embodied in various forms, I have shown for purposes of illustration in the accompanying drawings one embodiment which the same may assume inpractice.

shown a wheeled truck frame 1 carried on a plurality of wheels 2 adapted to run over a mine track 3 and to tram-:port a mining machine 4. of suitable construction, herein of a standard room-and-pillar type and provided with a flexible feed member 5 adapt-ed to be actuated. by a feed operating member 6 driven by the machine motor, and also having a gear 7 on its rear end likewise drivon from the motor and adapted to mesh with a cooperating" gear 8 carried on the rear end of the truck and connected through improved means hereinafter described,. to rotate a sprocket 9 driving a chain 10 con nected to the truck wheels.
In my improved construction, the upper surface of the front of the frame 1 is dis posed in a plane adjacent the tops of the wheels 2 and has a rotatable horizontally disposed plate 11, slightly wider than the frame. mounted on its front extremity on a vertical swivel 1.2. As shown this swivel. 12 is located in the longitudinal center line of the truck and slightly in rear of the transverse center line of the plate 11 and of. the front truck axle. Further. this plate is preferably also rotatably supported on a series of rollers 18 carried by the lower frame and rotatable on horizontal axes and disposed in longitudinal and transverse lines through the swivel and with the forward roller a greater distance from the swivel. Carried upon this plate 11 and having its rear end suitably supported in the frame 1 is an elongated longitudinally flanged machine receiving and guiding member or frame '14 having suitable transversely con nected tie plates 15 and open front and rear ends, the former as usually preferable being flared as shown. This frame 141 is in turn pivoted on a transverse axis between the ends thereof, at 16, to forwardly disposed extensions 17. herein in the form of angle irons, carried on the opposite sides of the front end of the plate 11, suitable removable pivot pins preferably being seated in the flanges on the member la and on the extensions 17 at points in advance of the front truck wheels. As shown. this member 14; is also preferably provided at its front end with nose portions 18 adapted to engage the bottom and hold up the front end of the member is when the latter is depressed as shown in Fig. 6. Upon this member 14 and between the same and the mining machine 4, is also preferably provided a pan 19 open at its opposite ends and provided with flanged sides. This pan normally acts as a support for the mining machine when the latter is in transport position, and is unloaded with the mining machine over the member 1-1- during the unloading operation and carried to the face, where it acts as a sumping pan curing the sumping operation. After the machine has been sumped into the coal, and before the same is again loaded upon the truck this pan 19 is also placed in the position shown in Fig. 8, with one end upon the depressed end of the member 14, and the other on the bottom, the same be ing so disposed as to act as a guide for the mining machine during the loading operation hereinafter described and reduce the angle between the truck and the bottom. Thus it will be noted that this pan 19 performs a dual function, the same acting as a sumping and loading pan at different times and during transport being carried beneath the machine upon the member 14. i kS shown, this pan 19 is also provided on each side with a plurality of lugs 20, 21, adapted successively to cooperate with a latch 22 on the rear end of the mining machine, the parts cooperating during loading and unloading as hereinafter described.
Disposed at the rear end of the truck is the truck driving mechanism including the ear 8 driven by the mining machine gear '1 and driving the sprocket 9 and chain connection 10 for the truck wheels. As shown, the gear 8 is connected, as by a screw 23, to the reduced upper end 24 of an upright worm shaft 25 journaled in suitable removable side roller bearings 2t) and end thrust bearings 27, in the housing frame 28 carried on the truck. As shown, this gear is also provided with an elongated hub keyed to the reduced portion 24 by a key 29, and is bodily removable to permit access to the bearings 26 upon removal of the screw 23. The thrust bearings 27 are herein also similarly held in position by apinned washer 30 and an screw 31 removably attached to the lower end of the shaft, a removable cap 32 cooperating in seating the bearing, and with the washer 30 and screw 31 being removable to permit access to the bearings. Here, attention is also directed to the fact that by removing the cap 32 and screw 81, the entire shaft 25 with its upper g air and bearings may be lifted. out of the housing. Formed upon. the shaft 25 at a point intermediate its ends, also a worm 33 which in turn meshes with worm gear 84 enclosed in the housing 28 and preferably running in oil therein, suitable oil plugs and 36 being provided for filling and draining the housing. The worm gear 34 is, as shown, preferably removably connected, as by screws or bolts 37, to a hub 88, in turn fixed to a sleeve 89 rotatable on a plurality of reduced portions 40 and 41 formed on the end of a tranwersc wheel driving shaft 42, journalcd in the housing. As shown this sleeve 35) is also rotatably mounted in the housing, one end of the same being enclosed in suitable ball bearings 43 carried in a suitable recessed member 44 on the frame. The sleeve is also connected to a reeuced portion 45 on the end of the shaft by removably connected socti nal end bearing members 46 which also retain the ball bearings in place. is illustrated, a cap 47 also fits into the recess id member in such a manner as to assist in holding the ball bearings in position and is attached to th outside of the housing by screws 48, the construction being such that, upon the removal of this member 47 and the end bearii'ig mom bcrs 46, the ball bearings may be bod" N withdrawn from the housing when desirer, while upon removal of the members 47, 46, and the. members 78, (i4, 65, with the side frame plate through which the member 78 extends, the shaft e with the friction there on may be bodily withdrmvn in the opposite direction. As shown, suitable bearing sleeves 49 and 50 are pro 'ided between the sleeve and the educed portions 40 d 41 of the shaft and the sleeve is also provitx with a collar 51 on its right hand end which cooperates with the bearing members 46 to hold the sleeve 39 sec rely in place. This sleeve 39 is also operativcly connected to a suitable clutch, the same herein being rigidly connected by a key 52 with a sleeve on an outer clutch member 53 disposed coanialy with the shaft and adapted to cooperaie with an inner coaxially arrans oajl expa' i lc clutch member 54 pivotally connected by toggle links with a clutch shipper mov able longitudinally on the shaft 42 relativ' to a spider 5? keyed to the shaft 58 an. held against longitudinal movement relative to the shaft by a collar 59 formed on the shaft. means is shown to comprise a transversely disposed angle iron 95 mounted upon the rear end of the pan 19 and disposed in the loaded position of the parts, just beneath the truck driving gear 7. As shown this angle iron 95 provided with a sloping surface adapted to slidably engage and underlie a cooperating upwardly extending lip 96 formed on the gear housing, the con struction being such that the machine in its rearward movement on the truck thus guided in such a manner as to bring its gear '7 into proper mesh with the gear 8 and to hold these gears in the desired mesh during); transport regardless of the irregularities of the track. It will also be noted that a longitudinally disposed lever 97 is pivoted in the truck upon it transverse pivot 98 above th shaft Q2 and pivotally connected through toggle 99 with a machine hole ing finger 100 adapted to be received in a suitable aperture 101 in the rear end of the machine, to hold the letter rigidly in position upon the truck, the construction being such that by pulling the rear end of the lever 97 upward the finger 100 will be readily withdrawn from the aperture 101. Attention also directed to the fact that at each side it the truck frame, means are provided. to prevent the frame 12 from swinging about its several pivots l2 and 16 when the machine on the truck. lhese means herein comprise pivotally mounted hooks 102 tired to a transversely disposed rock shaft 103 in turn operated by an operating handle 104- at one end of the shaft. These members 102 are thus movable by that handle relative to the truck body in such a manner as to cause the members 102, when in their upright position, to eng ge pins 102 on the frame and therel'iy inhibit lateral and tilting movement of the frame 14: about its pivots, the members 102 also being movable about the axis ot the rock sh aft 103 into their inoperative position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig; 2 wherein they do not interfere with amovement of the frame 14. about either of its pivots.

Then the flexible feed chain 5 is connected between the feed operating memher 6 of the machine and the hooks 110, or, desired, directly to a point adjacent the face, and the machine motor is started, whereupon the entire machine 4r fed along its feed chain and relative to the truck carrying with its pan 19 due to the engagement of the latch 22 with the cooperating rear lug 20 on the pan. As the machine moves outward over the frame 1 1, the latter will he tilted from the horizontal position shown in Figures 1 and 2 to the tilted position illustrated in Figure 6, the machine and pan then moving down the frame 1auntil the machine is supported on. the bottom. The pan 19, it will be noted, remains connected to the machine due to the engagment of the latch 22 with the mg 20 so that thus a sumping frame is provided beneath the machine adapted to guide the same relative to the face during the sumping operation. the latch 22 being successively released from the lugs 20 and 21 as the ma chine moves do the face. After the ma chine has been sumpcd into the coal, the pan 19 is then returned to the position illuslrated in Figure 8 wherein it forms a continuation of the still tilted frame 1st and cooperates therewith to reduce the loading angle, the parts then being ready to receive the ma chine when the latter has (X ale/ted its cut. ll hen this occurs, the feed chain may be conis usually connected to a jack 113 as by chain lines shown in Fig. 8 and operatively connected between the bottom and the roof at a point within the open end of the pan 1% and in rear of the rear of the pan 19. Thus, by drawing in its chain, the machine may be fed up on to the pan 19. Thereafter, the jack 113 is removed and the end of the feed chain is connected in one of the notches 111 on the rear end of the frame 14;, shown in the upper dotted chain position in Fig. 8, i. e. in such a manner that the machine may move up the inclined frame 1d. During this movement, the latch 22 is permitted to engage the front lug 21 on the pan 19 in such a manner as to cause the pan 19 to move with the machine up the inclined frame 1 1. After the machine has moved sufficiently far on the frame 1 1 to over-balance the latter into horizontal position (Fig. 9), the end of the feed chain is then removed from the notch 111 and connected to the chain fork 109, as shown in the dot-ted line in Fig. 9, and the latch 22 is raised to permit it to pass freely over the lug 21, the machine then moving relative to the pan l9 and rear wardly to bring its gear 7 into mesh with the gear 8 on the truck, the rearward movement of the machine being limited and directed by the cooperating guiding and holding means 95 and 96. When in this position, the members 100 and 102 are operated, and the machine then being securely re-locked in position upon the truck, is ready for transport.
When it is desired to unload the machine at an angle relative to the truck or track, it will be observed that the entire frame 14; may be manually swiveled relative to the truck as soon as the machine is released for lateral movement by lowering the members 102. Preferably, however, the same is caused to be swiveled by the chain automatically by simply laying the chain along the front end of the truck and connectin its advance end of one side of the truck at the place desired. Obviously, with the frame so disposed, the machine may be unloaded therefrom 7) substantially as previously described. Also the truck may be loaded in the same general manner (Fig. 10) like wise previously described. returning the machine to the truck, it will be observed that when the machine has tilted the frame 14 into horizontal position and before the machine has been moved to the rear end of that frame the feed chain is preferably released from its notch 111 and connected to the chain fork 109 in such a manner as, while the machine moves rearward to complete its movement relative to the frame 1 1, to swing that frame automatically on its swivel and into alinement with the truck. 69. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck carrying a cable reel and a transverse shaft, a flexible driving connection between said shaft and reel, an idler pulley mechanism for said flexible member, and a hook adapted to engage said mechanism to hold the same in inoperative position.
70. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck, an element adapted to be movable thereon, and means for locking the same including a fixed element carried. by said truck and having an inclined substantially fiat sur face and means cooperating therewith carried by said movable element and movable into vertically rigid locking relation with said fixed element when said movable element is in retracted position on said truck.
71. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck, a vertically tiltable mining machine receiving frame thereon adapted to slidably receive a mining machine of the type normally slidable on its bottom on the mine bottom during cutting, and means for locking said frametagainst tilting disposed at the rear and side of said truck and said frame when said frame is in locked position.
72. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck, a vertically tilta-ble frame thereon, and latch means disposed at the rear of said truck and having cooperating elements on said frame and truck to prevent tilting thereof.
73. In a mining apparatus, a truck, a member swiveled on the front end thereof on a vertical axis, roller mechanism between said member and truck disposed on opposite sides and in front and rear of said swivel, the front roller mechanism being at a greater distance from said swivel than the others, and a machine receiving frame tiltably mounted on said member on a horizontal axis adjacent the front edge thereof.
